Not what we were expecting to name her!

Our beautiful girl finally made an appearance at 4:23 this morning. After compiling a list of names for her, we realised she was a Jemima which wasn't on our list at all. She just looks like a Jemima to both of us and all other names were forgotten. Does this happen often, when a random not discussed name suddenly comes with baby out of nowhere or are we very weird?!

OP posts:

Are you not worried people will call her Jemima puddleduck? That’s the first thing that popped into my head. I thought jemima was a funny made up name, like how on Friends Phoebe calls herself Regina Phalange 😅

I love the name, always have, but I thought a child would be teased and called Aunt Jemima.

Aunt Jemima was the brand name of pancake mix and syrup up until the 2010s in the US. Probably why I've never known a Jemima in real life.

Congratulations on sweet Jemima!

With my first child, we couldn't agree and weren't 100% sure about the names on our list. When DS was born we knew the names on the list wouldn't work. I remember looking at my baby and in my mind seeing letters come together. They didn't all come at at once but it was like 'there's an 'm' but its not Michael' and then the name kind of appeared in my mind's eye and I could see it. Just the my brother came in to visit and asked the name. I said I didnt know. DB then suggested the name I had just 'seen'. I asked my husband what he thought and he just said 'yep!' and that was that! Suits him so much!

Congratulations 🎊

DS2 was absolutely not going to be called Joshua. Until he was born. The second I saw his face, I knew his name was Joshua.

Just remembered two things. Youngest DS was not going to be named Jack, most popular name for a few years at that point. Then he was born. Yep, he is a Jack!

My mother (who gave me the most common name in the UK for fucking years in the end) wanted to call me Heidi. I was primary school age when the sitcom Hi-de-Hi became massively popular in the UK, so glad she changed her mind! Its about the only thing to which I am grateful for having such a boring name!

MyTrivia · 27/02/2026 02:07

Yes, it happened to me. I wanted to call my dd Clio or Jemima (funnily enough). And when she was born, I realised that she was an Isabella.

Ginagogo · 27/02/2026 02:00

Our first baby was born unexpectedly really small. All the names on our list seemed too big for her (if that makes sense?!) so we called her Penny. It popped into my head and she couldn’t have been anything else.

Jemina is a gorgeous name, congratulations x

IndigoBluey · 27/02/2026 01:42

It’s a brilliant name. I was nearly a Jemima back in 1980. Congratulations!

Silverbirchleaf · 27/02/2026 01:21

Yes, with second son. He was going to be called William Harry, but he didn’t look like William to us, so we reversed the names.

Congratulations on Jemima. Pretty name.

mathanxiety · 27/02/2026 01:14

Congratulations!

With one of my DCs, I had the first and middle name all settled, but realised the middle name was all wrong soon after delivery.

Whendotheysleep · 27/02/2026 01:10

Jemima is lovely - congratulations!!

Is there any reason why posters are so scared of sharing the names they chose for their children (15 years ago!) on here? All this Fred/ George / Hilary seems odd on an anonymous forum where people are sharing lovely baby names.....

What are you worried about?

Needspaceforlego · 27/02/2026 00:53

Nah, Jemima is the dolly from Play School, But thats likely 2 generations away for this baby girls.

OP Beautiful choice, congratulations 🎊
The only Jemima I know is an older lady who goes by Mima. And she's a star woman too.

My one bit of advice take lots of photos. It all goes so fast.

Edited

Possibly outing but I know a Jemima too, and a Verity (which my mother was convinced was a made up name when her relative named her DD!), but then I have the single most common name in the fucking WORLD, so what does she know?!

DramaAlpaca · 27/02/2026 00:52

Aww, I love Jemima! Congratulations!

We didn't have a name for DS1, because I was sure for no logical reason that I was having a girl, but I knew instantly that my favourite boys' name wasn't right for him. We picked his name later that day and it's perfect. My favourite name went on DS2, because it did suit him, and still does.

It's so funny how you just know.

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/02/2026 00:46

Congratulations!

Happened to me/us (well mainly me!)

Had DD2 and we had picked a name we were absolutely set on. As I lay awake looking at her I couldnt get a different name (never on our list) out of my head. When her dad came in the next day I said "I dont like sally, I want to call her hilary" and he looked at her and said that he agreed, she looked more like a hilary. And that was it!

Not the real names obvs!

Giraffehaver · 27/02/2026 00:46

Thanks everyone. I've suddenly got leaky eyes!

What a lovely name! Congratulations!!

With my eldest I didn't find out the sex but I always said if it was a girl she would be called Tabitha. I was adamant, nothing else was considered. I loved the name and I still do but when I finally had my baby girl I was so confused because she just wasn't Tabitha! Eventually, after 10 days, she became Holly and it just suits her perfectly ☺️

ShrimpBoil · 26/02/2026 23:36

We never chose names until the baby was here - waited to see what/who they looked like. Weirdly we had thought pretty firmly of a first name/middle name combination, when my brother visited and said 'he looks.like a 'middlename' so that was it!

Eggybreadwithnuts · 26/02/2026 23:27

LOVE that name 💕

Why would you think this? Google is free.

AnnieLummox · 26/02/2026 23:26

There’s a lovely scene in Grace and Frankie where Frankie’s son and DIL can’t work out what to call their daughter (amongst other things they’re panicking about).

If you haven’t seen it, Frankie is a very hippy/spiritual character. She calmly tells them their daughter will let them know her name when she’s ready. They think she’s just being barmy until she leaves for the day and says “Goodnight, Faith” to the baby. And then they just know ☺️

user593 · 26/02/2026 23:22

Congratulations OP. Both my DC were named like that. They just didn’t look like anything on the shortlist. We waited until six weeks to name both though so by then we had really got to know them!

LoudPlumDog · 26/02/2026 23:21

Ahhh I love Jemima Puddleduck!

What names were on the list?

AnnieLummox · 26/02/2026 23:17

Sometimes you just know, and you don’t necessarily know why. How lovely that you’re both in sync on this too!

BeaLola · 26/02/2026 23:17

I think that’s a lovely name - congrats on your beautiful baby girl

Welcome Miss Jemima

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 26/02/2026 23:07

Congratulations, Jemima is such a beautiful name.

I did this with my son. We had either Elliott or Oliver picked out right from the early days of my pregnancy but about 10 days before DS was born I realised I was warming to a completely different name. It hadn't been on my radar AT ALL but suddenly I kept hearing this name on the TV and radio due to a sportsman who was in the public eye a lot at the time.

When DS was born I looked at him and I just didn't see an Elliott or an Oliver looking back at me. The other name just seemed like it was meant for him!
