Not what we were expecting to name her!

Our beautiful girl finally made an appearance at 4:23 this morning. After compiling a list of names for her, we realised she was a Jemima which wasn't on our list at all. She just looks like a Jemima to both of us and all other names were forgotten. Does this happen often, when a random not discussed name suddenly comes with baby out of nowhere or are we very weird?!

Yes, my mum said this happened with me. Dead set on having a daughter called Rose all her life then I popped out and she called me something else 🤣

Giraffehaver · 01/03/2026 22:23

Thanks everyone. I've been scrolling the T'Internet for Jemima Puddleduck accessories!

I meant the 1975 one. It had Angela Thorne in it (To the Manor Born) and Timothy's mother from Sorry!.

1975? Or the shit remake? The original is nothing like the book, but absolutely glorious.

I'd love to have had a DD called Posy! Not that now-ex would have agreed to it!

‘70s version.

Grupon · 01/03/2026 15:13

I was at school with a Jemima. She was really lovely. A proper kind girl

Posy always reminds me of Ballet Shoes also. Loved the tv series as a child.,

We hadn't chosen any girls names. She was the first girl in 5 generations.
She was 11 premature. For the first couple of weeks she was just Baby road.
One day as we were leaving DH said 'see you in the morning Laura'
Couldn't stay in as there were no beds on the maternity wards (Christmas)

HugoThatway · 01/03/2026 14:32

The TV series wasn't a patch on the book.
There were differences you'd spot immediately if you had already read the book.
It was still good.

Ballet Shoes?

"Her name is Posy. Unfortunate but true"

Happened with our daughter. She was just not any of the other names we had considered. She went on to name her brother after a character in a book (Blackberry Farm) we had read to her. Luckily we had a son or the baby could have been called Posy!

Christopher?

I so loved those books!

Go for it, we had a totally different make planned for my DD and when she arrived it didn’t suit her at all. The name we gave her was one of never even thought about but it was just the name for her.

Oh and congratulations 😊.

NaneePolly · 28/02/2026 07:37

That’s a beautiful name. I’m awaiting the birth of my first Granddaughter and can’t wait to know her name, I’m sure my daughter in law and son will choose something that’s suits her. Congratulations to you all

VerbenaGirl · 28/02/2026 06:38

Yes! We had a four name shortlist to try out on our DD2 when she arrived and none of them felt right when we got there - despite loving the names. Her name just popped into my head when she was about four days old and, despite not having been on our horizon at all, was just her name. Fortunately DH thought so too.

JellybeanCookie · 27/02/2026 20:25

We had a list of names for DS1 and decided to wait until he was born to see what he looked like. He then didn't look like any of the names on the list, we eventually decided a completely new name when he was 3 days old.

With DD2 the name 'Leila' popped into my head whilst I was pregnant despite me and DH having already agreed her name. Unfortunately he wouldn't budge so we kept the name we picked originally (still a lovely name) but I do think she would have suited Leila too!

Mosaic80 · 27/02/2026 20:02

Jemima is beautiful and I love that she could be Jem in future (I don’t know why but I love a diminutive that is the first part of the name). I also think it’s lovely when you can choose a name that looks like them. It sounds perfect - congratulations!

Whendotheysleep · 27/02/2026 01:10

Jemima is lovely - congratulations!!

Is there any reason why posters are so scared of sharing the names they chose for their children (15 years ago!) on here? All this Fred/ George / Hilary seems odd on an anonymous forum where people are sharing lovely baby names.....

What are you worried about?

Oh, to this… my DD is one of 27 born in 2020, and my DS has a fairly uncommon name in the 300s. I once Googled “(DD name) and (DS name)” and the only result was me posting on mumsnet to ask if they worked as a pair 😂

Had to ask MN to take the post down (which MNHQ kindly did) as it was so outing if you advance searched me…

Cheepcheepcheep · 27/02/2026 19:59

Funnily enough my DD splashed in a puddle today and I said ‘hello miss puddle duck’ and suddenly thought how lovely a name Jemima is.

Congrats on your little girl OP!

feemcgee · 27/02/2026 19:52

This thread is so sweet. I love the thought of these stroppy determined babies who have spent months listening in horror to their parents deciding on their special names ( and nicknames) and have grasped the nettle and arrived complete with their own name agenda.

Names should be decided when the baby arrives imo, and nicknames should be organic and spontaneous, not planned.

Welcome to the world Jemima, all the best people have February birthdays. 🐟

Edited

This. We had lists of possible names but we didn’t decide for weeks after each one was born (and gave into family pressure in one and reverted to our original, changing the birth cert at 11m)

abracadabra1980 · 27/02/2026 19:48

Jemima is a gorgeous name-and the name of my first ragdoll!

Unpaidviewer · 27/02/2026 19:48

Congratulations. I love the name, it was on my list but we had a boy.
