Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

I thought it was a shortened of the German "National Socialist Party" (obviously the German spelling - which I am not going to attempt)

That is indeed the origin of "Nazi".

However, "Ignacio" is apparently the origin of "Nachos". A Mexican guy named Ignacio ("Nacio" for sort, "Nacho" when gringos try to pronounce it) had a bar and made cheesy tortilla chips as a snack for his customers.

or perhaps his other child Techno Mechanicus

Edited

I love Techno Mechanicus, can you imagine calling him in for tea… “Techno Techno Techno!” you could use glow sticks and a whistle! Grin

No doubt called her other son Prick.

That’s Rick with a silent P.

I remember reading a thread on here where five siblings had all been given the middle name Mary - as a confirmation name - even though they were all boys!

That was once quite common in Ireland, there was a family of four boys in our street who all had Mary as one of their names.

I don't think it was ever the law that every girl had to be Maria, I think it was just very very popular, and probably encouraged by the Church. I know there are a lot of Marias with a second name to distinguish them eg Maria Carolina, Maria de la Luz, Maria de Pilar, can't find any reference to it being statutory.

My mum wanted to call me charity.

Would be even worse if your surname was Sharp - especially if you spoke with a New England drawl!

Ah but with the quotations, I don’t have an apostrophe- what you are seeing here is the closing quote mark around the name Destiny. And I totally agree that to be grammatically correct there should be no apostrophe- but that doesn’t make it look less odd. Anyway, we digress from the point of the thread.

Oh I see what you mean!

ToWhitToWhoo · 13/02/2026 13:02

Absolute worst was definitely 'Hitler': the first name of someone from a Latin American country, whom I came across in a work context.

RafaFan · 13/02/2026 12:45

Chastity is fairly common here is Canada, and I once came across a Chasity.

I would be shocked (and concerned) if someone named their child Adolf or similar.
But other than that I really don't care what names people choose.
Edit : Ok I do sometimes think "poor kid" if a name has a daft spelling or it's what I personally think is an ugly name - but I wouldn't actually say anything to the parents.

Edited

A lot of mis-spelt wanky names are naff along with things ie Stone and the ilk.
I don't think some parents should be naming a pet let alone a baby.

Technically you are correct - but it looks odd, I think. Perhaps quote marks around the name, so, ‘Destiny’s ?

Edited

No, there were no 'quote' marks. It may look odd to you, but it's a plural so correct with no apostrophe. These name threads are usually peppered with the damn things. I just cracked at that one!

Argentina did, not sure about now and every girl had to be Maria + another name. My friend was one of three sisters and when the father registered their births refused point blank to have Maria and said each time he would call them 1,2 and three. He got his way.

Some people don’t like Kayden, Jayden, Brayden. This is a thread about names that are hated, after all.

Not really. The title is "the worst name you have ever come across".
Those 3 names are perfectly ordinary names.
I wouldn't name my child something like Humphrey, Gertrude or Stanley because I simply don't like them. I might think to myself "poor kid" but they are normal names.
There's a difference between a name that not to your taste vs a name like Naziboy or Pineapple.

The quotation marks wouldn't change anything. The PP is right, you don't need an apostrophe.

But you are also right that Destinys looks odd - I think that's because it's a noun that would usually pluralise to destinies. So Destinys just looks strange as a word.

My mum was due on Valentine's Day so her parents planned to call her Valentina! I think that would have been pretty bad. Luckily she was late.

Aw I love Valentina. I used to know a little Italian girl with this name. Everyone called her Vale or pronounced Vah-lay. She was so cute!

It's spelt Nevaeh. That's the only way it's 'heaven backwards'.

I hate that name and the dad that named his daughter Lanesra which is spelt Arsenal backwards.

Nothing wrong with those names.
Would you have posted if you taught 3 children in the same class called Milly, Jilly and Billy.
Their names rhyme. So what?

Yes Charlotte, but the other one, Marnie (just looked it up)has a Kixee😩

Oh dear god! Apologies, I didn't think for a second it was a name and assumed you got mixed up!! That's bonkers

Avantiagain · 13/02/2026 10:24

Of people I know, two random names hyphenated. The child never wanted both names used but the parent always insisted on it and complained about any member of staff that didn't use both. This was yr 7.

Similar situation teaching abroad and I taught a Golf and a Bank. I think they just chose English words instead of English names.

Fish, Rain, Water, Leaf.

Fish, Leaf and Water were lovely.
Rain was mad.

In the UK I once taught 3 boys Jayden, Kayden and Brayden all in the same Y8 class.

They were popular names then - how is that making them ‘the worst name you’ve ever heard’?
I guess, as everything that got super popular, they had to be mocked soon after by certain people (often, teachers).
