Help I’m 39 weeks pregnant

Just now considering Phoebe… I love the nicknames Pheebs and Bea.

Would Alys work as a middle name?

My husband is not sure because he thinks of Phoebe Buffay - but I think that’s just because he doesn’t know any other Phoebes! I have a friend called Pheobe and think of her when I hear the name instead.

OP posts:

@TreadLightlyToo , Hebe, Phoebe and Thebes are from Greek, as is Phoebe, a. The other words have a fairly consistent pronunciation.

Glebe
Thebes

English is not a very regular language as we know, but I think that there are more examples & more common ones than glebe, which I had to google (an area of land within an ecclesiastical parish used to support a parish priest - so I've learnt something today) & Thebes.

But anyway fortunately going by my Phebe's years of experience not many people make that mistake.

Phoebe from Charmed. Kick ass woman.

Why? How would you pronounce Hebe? Or...

My Phebe came home from school when she was little & explained to me that she has a split vowel digraph in her name. I was very impressed I wasn't taught the names of this stuff when I was at school 😀

I'd assume Phebe was pronounced Feeb. Never seen that spelling before.

I find it hard not to think of Friends and find it hard to see what my impression of the name would have been without that. I’d never heard of it before Friends and I think young me thought they’d created it for the character.

Like others say though her generation probably won’t have that association although she’ll maybe have a few adults bring it up.

Pettenell · 28/01/2026 01:36

Both Phoebe and Alys are really good names and they do sound lovely together!

GinsengTea · 28/01/2026 01:35

Reminds me of a rabbit with buck teeth. It’s a no from me.

I have a (badass) Phoebe and she was almost Phoebe Alice. It’s lovely (my Phoebe is obsessed by the Greek mythological origin)

Norastroud · 27/01/2026 21:25

I love the name Phoebe, it’s a great name & suits all ages. I like Phe as a nickname. I know very young ones, a few in their 30’s & my friend’s Grandmother was a Phoebe.

user2848502016 · 27/01/2026 21:24

I love it, I know a couple of little Phoebes

Phoebe Alys is lovely

BeaLola · 27/01/2026 21:03

I like Phoebe but I love Alice - the latter for me also has a lovely family connection

If you like Bea why not Beatrice or Beatrix ?

Madcats · 27/01/2026 20:45

I have an 18 year old Phoebe. I reckon a good 10% of adults she encounters can’t spell her name correctly. It’s annoying, but she copes.

I think she has been “Feebs” for most of her teen life for her friends.

Livpool · 27/01/2026 20:32

I love it! DS would have been Phoebe if he hadn’t been a DS.

I can never hear it without thinking “P as in Phoebe, H and is Hoebe, O and is Oebe, E and is Ebe, B as is be-be and E as is ‘ello there mate” - which isn’t a bad thing

Vicliz24 · 27/01/2026 19:13

I love the name Phoebe I used to work with one who was lovely. She was Bebe as a nickname.

Moreteaandchocolate · 27/01/2026 19:08

Phoebe Alys is a gorgeous name - love it!

Hello19834 · 27/01/2026 18:31

Phoebe is a gorgeous classic !
Alice too (or Alys)

Beautiful choice

Well by commenting in the first place it’s very clear this is what my opinion is and what I think, why would I need to clarify that? Are we now only allowed to post if we like a name?

Your comment was very rude and there are different ways of letting people know your opinion. You can do it in a nice constructive and respectful way or in a rude way. I’m sorry you don’t understand the difference.

mamaduckbone · 27/01/2026 18:22

Lovely name! I have a beautiful great niece Phoebe.

RosieCottonDancing · 27/01/2026 18:18

Phoebe is a hard no for me personally. The syllables sound weirdly random to me - why not Bephoe? 😂 Feebs is not a nickname I’d enjoy having myself.

I’d go Alys as a first name.

Cookiesandbeans · 27/01/2026 18:04

Phoebe is the 17th most popular baby name in the UK right now and has been a popular name for many many years. You forgot to add “I think” or “My personal opinion is” to your comment or even better you shouldn’t have posted at all since you’ve got nothing constructive or nice to say.

@Cookiesandbeans , in my opinion, pretty much every post is just an opinion.

Berlinlover · 27/01/2026 17:37

It’s probably one of the worst names in existence. Sorry OP.

@ArtTheClownIsNotAMime , might be my bank (it's one of the main high street ones) but my name is on my account as Mrs Middlename Surname.
