We're days away now from welcoming our third and just can't fix on a final name for our surprise gender baby. Which would you choose for a boy/girl?!

I like Rudy. Short for Rudolph I presume? Cute ❤️.

I think it's quite an international name. I've only ever known two, one is Bulgarian and the other is South African. I also like the Rue or Roo potential for a nickname!

Rue means Street in French

Did none of your Rudy haters watch Misfits?!

SUCH a great character.

In terms of Sol... My name is really unusual - like, not even top 4,000 in the UK - and sounds like it should be short for something, though no one is quite sure what. I've never been bothered by people asking what it's short for.

I've always loved having an unusual name too, btw. And yes, kids did take the piss sometimes at school. It's the kind of name that can be turned into an insult. But rarely, and it was only the kids that didn't like me. If I'd been called Tracy, they'd have found something else instead.

Edited

Some kids will always find a way to tease, be it for a name or looks or hobbies. I can't see a Rudy being a standout reason for bullying!

Rudy is not an attractive name in English and I'd avoid it unless you have strong German roots. It falls a bit into the category of trendy British people using names from non British countries to appear different or unique like when people name their child Luca or Matteo instead of Lucas or Matthew. As someone who isn't British, and probably controversial but idc - when people do this I immediately think they're a bit of a knob. It's also just not a nice sounding name in English.

It also isn't as uncommon as you probably think - I know quite a few in baby groups around me, and I also know a lot of baby Ruben's, your child will invariably probably end up with the nickname of Rue, the same nickname all the Ruben's get, and they'll be one of five Rue's in their class at school 🤷‍♀️ if you're picking this name because you think its really unique, I promise you it isn't

Sol and Stella

lottiegarbanzo · 23/01/2026 18:28

Is Sol short for Solomon? Solly’s cute

Sol and Stella = 🍺 yes

Like both your girl names

Rudy is just - rude

LivingTheDreamish · 23/01/2026 05:37

Sol or Stella (but I admit I like Solomon better).

FatFoxie · 22/01/2026 17:46

SliceofTosst · 20/01/2026 21:07

Like both boy names but really dislike both girl names!

I'm the opposite. Like both Stella & Nancy but not Rudy or Sol !

OhDear111 · 22/01/2026 17:43

Sol is often short for Solomon (Solly). Religious name for some people. I’d probably avoid but it might depend where you live.

Being a ‘rude boy’ is a compliment???

Being called ‘Rude’ as a nickname isn’t an insult???

Yes - Rude Boy/Rudebwoy is slang originally from Jamaican sub-cultures (it's the energy that gave birth to punk) that is still part of UK street culture, street fasion and especially urban music A Rude Boy is hard to explain. It's a bad boy, anti-establishmebt, but sharp, stylish, with charm and swagger. Rude Girl is also a thing.

And no, being called Rude as nickname isn't an insult if the people giving it to you are your friends and family, as an abbreviation of Rudy.

I think you are massively overthinking the rude in Rudy here.

Tryagain26 · 22/01/2026 13:04

Sol.and Nancy. For some reason I don't like the name Stella (though it's a perfectly reasonable name) and I'm not sure about Rudy. I'm not sure about Sol either( it sounds as though it is short for something else) but I prefer it to Rudy

Lollylavender · 22/01/2026 12:59

Bloozie · 22/01/2026 11:56

I know. It just immediately has very positive connotations for me. But I think it's more likely to be parents that pick up on rude = poor manners than kids. Being a rude boy is a compliment - sharp, edgy.

And I firmly stand by the fact that if kids are going to pick on you, they will pick on you. Doesn't matter what your name is. One of the names I got called once was Diarrhoea. It's critical you understand that my name is not Di, Diane, Rhea/Ria, Rio, Thea, Leah, Mia or any other name you could possibly imagine would lead to Diarrhoea. It takes serious mental gymnastics.

The argument is often, yes kids will find a reason so why give them ammunition? In this case, I'd be like, if the ammunition leads them to 'Rude', let them get to that fairly benign first base and stay there.

You'd end up calling the kid Rude yourself as a parent anyway. His mates would call him Rude. It can't be an insult if it's your nickname.

You are reaching quite a bit there.

Even a Misfits character will change the Rude association, unfortunately.

I love unusual names too and chose names outside the top 250 for our children.

Everleigh13 · 22/01/2026 11:02

Stella is lovely.

I would go for Sol as personally I don’t like the name Rudy.

I’d hate to called Rudy, can you imagine the teasing and being called Rude as a nickname???

CurlewKate · 22/01/2026 07:53

I do often wonder if some posters have ever met a child! Would you like to go to school called Rudy? Seriously? I do like Stella out of your four names.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 22/01/2026 07:50

Sidebeforeself · 21/01/2026 21:42

Sol is nice but you’ll be sick of people asking what its short for.Yes its no shorter than Sam etc but people are familiar with those,

Love Rudy/Rudi and Nancy

Stella is a bit too popular for me

Nancy was actually 4 x more popular than Stella in 2024 but I get that it's likely location specific as well - you get clusters. A friend has a teen DD Stella and she's always been the only one in her school but then my son has a name that was outside top 100 and there were 3 in his smallish primary class so you can't always predict these things.

I wanted to call DD Zara but was worried about a possible Olympics 2012 bump but that never came.

mathanxiety · 22/01/2026 01:36

I really like both of your girl names. Maybe flip a coin?

I'd choose Rudy for a boy. I'd only use Sol.as a nickname for Solomon.
