Thoughts on Jessamy

Thoughts on Jessamy (Jess-a-me). It's 17th Century variation on Jasmine and Jessamine.

Plenty of us have come across this lovely name. It is not a "trashy mash up".

It’s my mum’s name. She often goes by a shortening but I’m not aware of her ever having trouble with people not knowing how to pronounce it. I’ve always thought it was beautiful and suits her perfectly. I’m confident that everyone on MN would hate the names I gave to my own children!

Why are so many people apparently allergic to names like Carol, Susan, Mary, Heather, Rose, or any of the dozens if not hundreds of available names that 100% of native English speakers know how to pronounce and spell?

Because that would cause different issues if everyone had the same (very few) names, even ignoring personal taste.

Even one of the names you’ve suggested you’d need to spell out - is it Carol or Carole?

"Carol, no E" and "Carole, with an E" are still worlds better than having to spell your entire first name.

There are more easy-to-spell names available than the ones I listed. As for the "loads of people with the same name" problem, there were four with the sane name in my class at school and we coped. Davids and Johns everywhere cope.

My first thought when I saw Jessamy was that the hyphen was missing between Jess and Amy, but now I can’t unthink the comment about ‘jizz’.

Why not Jasmine? It’s beautiful. Much prettier sounding than Jessamy.

Also there's the Jean Ure character from Star Turn - who has very annoyingly been renamed Maddy in the dumbed-down rewrite

It's lovely, very pretty, and I've been aware of it as a name for a long time though I haven't met any.

I also love it and knew a lovely person with the name . She was usually called Jess or Jesse .

Not a personal favourite, though I have heard of a Jessamy in my friend's class in the 1980s.

I prefer Jessica, Jamima, Jasmine, Jezabel and Jacinta.

I'm aware of the name and it is indeed a very old one. However, most people will assume it's a made up American thing. I much prefer Jessamine which is prettier and still very unusual.

I like it but I'm not sure I'd use it. I think you / your kid would be constantly asked how do you pronounce that?. I would go with Yasmin or Jasmine.
