Augustus vs. Augustin?

SharpGoldWriter · 10/01/2026 19:36

So...we like the nickname Gus and do not like the full name August (too trendy, not classic enough). That leaves Augustus or Augustin (ah-GUS-tin). Preferences? Difference in vibe or same vibe?

Jacob Rees Mogg doesn't own the right to Catholic names.
Augustin is beautiful.

Apart from it being usually spelt Augustine.

Yes Jacob Rees mogg came straight to my mind too

Fergus?

Emanwenym · 13/01/2026 18:04

Fungus

Thebigfellaisnowsnoozing · 13/01/2026 17:53

Augustus Gloop is unfair...
Fergus?

RuthW · 13/01/2026 17:49

I like Augustus and I’ve always like the shortening Gus, but I would have used Angus.

I absolutely believe it’s legit but absolutely wouldn’t be for me 😁 far too pointy and twee for my taste.(it’s the ‘ah’ that made me imagine an American accent - ah-gust, ah-gustus etc).

Edited

Oh yes, I do see what you mean. That could sound American too.

ResusciAnnie · 12/01/2026 20:04

Calliopespa · 12/01/2026 19:58

I think it's the French pronunciation actually - which isn't that odd as it is used more in French than English really.

I still prefer Augustus as a good strong name.

Augustin is very close to Augstine imo.

Augustine (AW-gus-teen) - really? I thought it was Au-GUS-tin.

Calliopespa · 12/01/2026 19:58

ResusciAnnie · 12/01/2026 19:55

Yes I’m assuming you’re American OP with that pronunciation??

I far prefer August, then Augustus (aw-gus-tus) then Augustine (AW-gus-teen). Ah-GUS-tin sounds very awkward to me.

Personally I’d just go Gus. Very friendly kind fun name, whereas the others are all a bit Much.

Much prefer Augustus. Classic and easy to pronounce (emphasis on Gus)

Augustin looks like the French or German pronunciation

Agree.

Augustus is a good classic name.

Can't believe people think of a Roald Dahl character over a founder of the Roman Empire.

Plenty of other Augustus links too: Augustus John, Augustus Pugin...

If you pronounce it Ah gus tin you will forever be correcting people who will say it Or gus tin

I recently read a little gem of a book (written by George V's physician) called Augustus Carp Esq (in the full flower of his southern metropolitan Christian manhood) and the beginning and the end have a discussion of the relative merits of Tus and Tin 😁(both the main character and his father were adamant that the child concerned should be Tus)

So I admit I'm side-eying them both a little bit; but it's a relatively unknown work (my copy was published in the 60s with plaudits from Anthony Burgess and Robert Robinson, but I've not seen it mentioned anywhere else) so you're probably safe...

Funniest book ever

Emanwenym · 12/01/2026 19:44

Gustav or Gaius

I prefer Augustus to Augustin but Gloop.

Pettenell · 11/01/2026 06:00

Augustus out of those 2. I love Gus!

But I prefer any of August, Magnus, Fergus, or Angus.

LivingTheDreamish · 11/01/2026 05:22

I do think Gloop I'm afraid, but if he is always Gus then it won't matter.

I do prefer Angus or Fergus personally.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 10/01/2026 23:47

Augustus is nice and Gus is lovely. Most people wouldn’t think Gloop and if they did, it wouldn’t last, once they got used to your little one, it would just be his name.

AlwaysRightISwear · 10/01/2026 23:25

It's usually spelt Augustine like the saint.

You could have Gustave or Gustavus.

Maybe Angus, Fergus or even Argus but the emphasis isn't quite right.

I prefer Augustus.

Although, I like Angus and Fergus more so than Augustus and Augustin.

I would use below names in order of my preference ..

Gus - Just name him Gus.
Angus
Fergus
Gustav
Augustus
Gust
August
Augustin
Augustine

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 10/01/2026 22:14

I know a cool Augustin. I quite like it and definitely much more than Augustus, which sadly I would always associate with 'Gloop'.

August I don't like because of the more commonly associated 'Auggie' diminutive, which for an inexplicable reason makes my skin crawl. Although I do still love the book Wonder.

Slothey · 10/01/2026 22:04

I prefer August. I’m in trendy nappy valley London and don’t know any, if that helps.

Augustin make me think of the saints, but that might be niche!

ChuisEpuisee · 10/01/2026 21:46

Gustave is lovely @MotorbikeStuntRider

RegalDiamondMonster · 10/01/2026 21:37

The two boys i know called Gus are both Angus, which i really like. Augustin is better than Augustus from your list.

Vaguelyclassical · 10/01/2026 21:31

Alongthetowpath · 10/01/2026 20:25

Augustin seems very (posh) Catholic to me - the sort of thing Jacob Rees Mogg might call his children.

I actually really love it despite that association, but perhaps Augustus has wider appeal.

Nah, he'd call the boy Augustine after the saintly theologian!
