Donald or Donalbain

Wildflowersweet · 08/01/2026 12:26

Again, two classic Scottish names. Donalbain is the name of a much beloved uncle we lost during Covid so is close to my heart. Donald is more common. Both I like.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Another Scot here. It doesn’t make me think of DT, it’s too embedded and common a name here for that, but I do think it’s a very unattractive name for someone to go through childhood and early adulthood with nowadays. Unless you’re giving birth to a 60yo accountant, I’d steer clear. I don’t like Donalbain either but I do think it’s better than Donald. Donald on a baby or child would make me giggle internally!

I'm Scottish living in Scotland and know lots of Donalds of all ages. Trump would never be the first person I thought of for Donald. It is a very common name in the highlands.

OnlyOneAdda · 09/01/2026 07:11

@Wildflowersweet the only absurd one on this thread is you asking for opinions and then getting ridiculously combative and angry in response.

No of course people wouldn't go and kill themselves with a name that later goes on to have negative connotations ffs - wtaf are you on?? There's a big difference between somebody already called Donald and you naming a baby during the time the most whacko president in history is in actually office.

Jeffrey, Theodore and Donald are not common names in this era.

If you like the name AS I'VE ALREADY SAID use it - but if you ASK FOR OPINIONS THATS WHAT YOU WILL GET. And a lot of people are saying the same for the same reasons.

You could just disagree...ranting all over the thread telling everyone they're wrong is what's absurd. The choice of name is the least of this babies problems if you're this unhinged and angry.

tuvamoodyson · 09/01/2026 07:08

Neither.

Snorlaxo · 09/01/2026 05:04

My dad is a Donald and got Duck when growing up.

I’m puzzled why you’re so surprised (angry?) that Trump and Duck are by far the most famous Donalds outside Scotland.

You asked for opinions so should have been braced for the possibility that people would say something you don’t like. Most name posts will include a negative comment whether you pick something “classic” (boring) or “out there” (try hard)

I agree that names like Andrew are unusable because of Tate and Mountbatten-Windsor and that people will use it as a middle name or use Drew instead.

I would use Donal or one of the other names on your list.

Donald:--oh dear . . .
Donalbain--the other son of Duncan in Macbeth who only gets a few lines and disappears from the action.
Neither heralds well.

That’s not the correct pronunciation. Duncan and Malcolm are also Shakespearean characters, but I don’t hear anybody sneering at those names as people on this thread are with Donalbain. All names have been in use in some form long before Shakespeare was born.

How is it pronounced, I've never heard of it before?

BahMinthumbug · 08/01/2026 23:48

Donal on its own is lovely. I like Tully.
Murray is fab.

ah the English think they know better than actual Scots actually living in Scotland who all say Donald is fine as a name and wouldn’t necessarily be associated with Trump. It’s more likely to be associated with Duck to be perfectly honest. The usual English superiority…

I didn't think of Trump at all when I read the OP.

OP, you have posted on a forum and seem to be outrageously offended by any negative opinion...either choose what you want and give no fucks what anyone thinks, or if you generally want opinions you need to take them good and bad 🤷‍♂️

I do agree with the name association point. I don't think Jeffrey or Andrew would be popular choices either (as Jimmy is usually derived from James and would rarely be on the birth certificate not sure this one applies)

I know a Myra that would have been a child just after the Moors Murders, and a Madeleine who was born soon after Madeleine McCann's disappearance, I think they are super odd and poor choices too.

Obviously not everyone will jump to the association no, but if they do, is that the desired outcome for your new child? That's what people are trying to say.

Don’t be absurd. What are all the men named Donald supposed to do? Kill themselves because they share a name with Donald Trump? Plenty of children have been named Jeffery and Theodore (Ted or Teddy popular nicknames) even in the aftermath of the crimes committed by sickos like Jeffery Dahmer and Ted Bundy. It hasn’t deterred people from using them. Popular names remain popular for a reason.

Donalbain - donal for short

So all those people saying to not use Donald because of Trump would also advise not to use Andrew or Jeffrey because of Jeffery Epstein or Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor? Never use Jimmy because of Jimmy Saville? Come on, folks. Where do you draw the line? It’s a classic name that has served a lot of Scottish men over time. Nothing wrong with it. Examine your wee, prejudiced heads.

Donald?? You will be the laughing stock of your community 🤣🤣🤣

Yep. All those names are tainted by association.

I think Murray and Magnus are lovely.

I’ve Murray I’ve ever met has been an absolute gem

Trump will be long gone before OP's son reaches secondary school, hopefully sooner. There have always been plenty little Joe's around, no-one thinks "Oh, like Stalin".

"Donald Where's Yer Troosers" had a brief resurgence about 30 years ago when some 10 year old had his 15 minutes of fame as an Andy Stewart impersonator, I doubt if many kids nowadays have even heard it.

Edited

It still gets sang in my house whenever anyone’s running about in their pants/nappy/ bare bum. Ditto for my siblings kids.

Must be a wind up. Donald. You can't be serious, this is a joke.

Good one. LOL 😆

So? That’s my point!

crazeekat · 08/01/2026 22:15

Wouldn’t ever pick Donald. Then again wouldn’t pick Diddy either. I guess it’s ur call op. But honestly use it pride of middle name. U can thank us

Giraffehaver · 08/01/2026 22:15

I strongly advise against either in this political climate.
How about Donal?

My first thought was Donald Trump, maybe in 10 years time but at the moment the association is too strong.

My second thought is Donald where’s your troosers.

Never heard of Donalbain but I’m guess he will be called Don most of the time? Which is OK. I do like Murray and Magnus.

Hahahahaha Donald whaurs yir troosers for defo poor boyo will
Get that sung to him alllll
the time u will
bloody hate that song which all
Scots love to sing COS WE ARE NOT CALLED DONALD!!!!!

I am not English, I am Irish. If I was naming a baby at the minute I wouldn’t pick Donald or Jeffrey or Andrew, although I only wouldn’t pick Andrew because I don’t like it. I wouldn’t use Ghislaine or Jimmy either, although James is fine. People do make connections whether you like it or not, it’s up to you whether you care. I named my son Jude because I liked it, even though some people go on about Jude the Obscure etc., because I don’t care about their opinions.
