Longer name for Nell

I like the name Nell but would like it to be short for a longer name. Which do you prefer out of Helena and Eleanor? Middle name would be Katherine or Louisa. Thanks!

I like both names (and would pronounce the first two syllables of Helena as Helen) but slightly prefer Eleanor.

Not keen on Penelope or names like Fenella or Prunella/Petronella. They are a bit flowery for my liking.

As a middle name, I prefer Katherine (though I would spell it Catherine).

Louisa is fine, but I don’t like it following Eleanor/Helena because both names end with an “uh” sound.

I also had a friend called Annella - she / her family were English. I always thought it was a lovely name.

That's rather pretty and a twist on the Annabelle/Arabella type names.

Calliopespa · 05/01/2026 12:53

Helena or Penelope are lovely.

Prunella or Petronella for something a bit more daring.

Please don't do Eleanor: i think the world will sink under the weight of another Ellie (and it will become Ellie) and other Evie, Eva, Isla type name.

Nell is sweet and my favourites would be Helena or Petronella!

SparkyBlue · 04/01/2026 19:50

My gran aunt Nellie was Mary Ellen

Namexchangex · 04/01/2026 19:29

I really dislike Helen, Ive had too many awful managers with that name that to me its old grumpy vibes. My preference would be Penelope, then Eleanor.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/01/2026 18:36

Penelope is the traditional one, I think, but I love love love Fenella ❤️

dailyconniptions · 04/01/2026 18:31

Fenella.

What's the point of this? I don't understand why people intentionally choose a first name they don't want to use except if it's a cultural thing

Flow. It's because they prefer Katherine Nell to Nell Katherine,
Nell Surname most of the time and occasionally Katherine Nell Surname.

I know a few people with names like this and the combination is usually:
Popular name Unusual name Common surname

AlwaysRightISwear · 04/01/2026 18:10

Thought of another option, Antonella.

I love the name Nell!

I had a friend as a child called Annella. I don’t know if the name was made up - she came from South Africa so perhaps it had some local origin. Anyway I always loved the name - the girl was so bright and fun, I can still picture her in my mind smiling.

I also had a friend called Annella - she / her family were English. I always thought it was a lovely name.

Could you do Katherine Nell, known as Nell?

RuthW · 04/01/2026 17:48

I prefer Helena, but would chose Eliza if it was me.

onyxtulip · 04/01/2026 17:00

My daughter is called Nelle - said Nell but added the E as it somehow made the name look more complete and feminine to us

Some people ask whether she's called Nell-ie which I find a bit odd as you wouldn't think that of someone called Belle. Anyway!

I love Nell/Nelle as a standalone name obviously but Fenella and Nella also appeal

Avantiagain · 04/01/2026 16:04

"They’d surely shorten to Hell or Helly?"

The traditional shortening of Helen is Nell.

Pavementworrier · 03/01/2026 22:10

Smelly Nelly? Cmon

Nellie is a top 100 name in England and Wales, plus all the Nell/Nelly/Nelles. There are far fewer Helens, for example, (born in recent years) than Nellie, or Nell, or Nelly.

There's a Nell and Nellie in DC primary school and neither teased, the song isn't really a thing anymore.

I'd go for Nell on its own, OP, as you won't be able to control the shortening of Eleanor, Helena or Penelope. But all of them are good names though.

sprigatito · 04/01/2026 13:46

I think Eleanor and Helena are both gorgeous and classy, but so is Nell on its own. It really comes down to how you feel!

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/01/2026 13:44

If you like Nell (and I agree, it’s a lovely name), then FGS just call her that! Having a longer version, eg on the BC, is just a pain.

SwayingInTime · 04/01/2026 13:43

My Nell is just Nell and has never been teased.

Old people used to mishear Neil all the time though as she has no hair for ages and was a very sturdy child so mistaken for a boy. That I accepted but Neil?!

hollyandribbon · 04/01/2026 13:29

The only Nell I know is short for Eleanor. The Helena we have in the family gets called Lennie.

But OP I warn you, my parents gave me a long name to be shortened to a nn they wanted (think Andrea to be shortened to Drea) and as I grew older I ended up being known as Andie at school, which stuck. If you want Nell then maybe just use Nell? It’s a fine name to use on its own.

landslide51 · 04/01/2026 13:17

I'm not keen on Fenella or Penelope - both sound too prissy for me. I like both Eleanor and Helena though. I think I'd go Helena Katherine.

Lollylavender · 04/01/2026 13:15

Helena or Helen

Not recommended. I have my middle name at the beginning and it can be a PITA.

Whoneedsanamesuggestion · 04/01/2026 09:48

All the Eleanors/ Elinors I know are Ellie

Hazelmaybe · 04/01/2026 09:48

Eleanor may decide she wants to be Ellie, Elle etc
