Alternative to 'Ellie' i.e. 'Ayllie' Aellee' or 'Aelly'

I'm wondering if any of you lovely ladies could help? Our little girl is due early next year and my partner and I still can't decide on which alternative spelling for 'Ellie' we would like. I'm drawn to either 'Ayllie' or 'Aellee'. Any kind thoughts on it would be appreciated :)

I’m a teacher and I had a pupil who’s name on the register was Elle, so first day of term I called her name out as ‘El’ and she corrected me that it was pronounced Ellie. Poor girl will have to spent her whole life doing that.

ladyamy · 13/12/2025 21:44

Ellie or a different name altogether.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 13/12/2025 21:24

As someone who has to spell my surname all the fucking time, do not inflict this nonsense on your daughter. It is she, not you, who will have to live with the consequences of your "kewl" spelling.

Kellie but the k is silent
Bellie but the b is silent
Nellie but the n is silent
Wellie but the w is silent
Jellie but the j is silent

She will never get bored of explaining it

This made me chuckle 🤭

Hallelujah.
I will just say that Alienor is a Medieval alternative spelling of the name Elinor/Eleanor (as in Elinor of Aquitaine) - so it would be a ‘real’ spelling, rather than a made up one, and could still be shortened to Allie or Ellie.
Thanks for this! yes I know even the word 'English' and 'England' were spelt 'Aenglish' and 'Aengland' in Medieval times😊

Ællie then.

Job done.

Fleur405 · 13/12/2025 21:17

Just call her diversive. It’s not a traditional name but I’m not sure that it’s actually a word either.

Eilidh? A bit like Ellie but is a proper name.
Thanks for that Sabrina but looking for a name that sounds like 'Ellie' but begins with and 'A'😊

Nothing is going to sound like Ellie if it starts with an A.

I think that's how the French often spell it as well, after Queen Alienor of Aquitaine. (Well, my French friend did anyway).

Ellie is how to spell Ellie.

Adding additional vowels helps no one.

This.
Stop your nonsense, op.

HushaBabbee · 13/12/2025 20:41

Fluffyholeysocks No that's a proper use of vowels in an actual real name.

No 'Ellie' is not an actual name and has an over usage of vowels

I thought Hallelujah was a suggestion!!

Hey @HushaBabbee- you could actually go with Allelujah on the birth certificate, Allie as a nickname, it’s a bit more modern and culturally diverse than Alison.

OR - keep Ellie but change the surname to Edems? Or Edam?

Ellie Edam has lovely alliteration nice (just watch out for the mean kids calling her Smelly Edam…)

Hang on - you could literally have Alliteration Adams, nickname Allie 😁 Sorted.

LittleGreenDuck · 13/12/2025 20:38

I know this is a wind up, but my daughter has a friend called Aurelia who goes by Ellie. Serious option!

Do you mean the Gaelic name Eilidh? It can also be spelled (subject to other mumsnet users' strong feelings on it) Ailidh, Ailie, or Eily.
Aellee is... not going to be a name you will find on a souvenir pen.
ooh I like 'Ailidh' and 'Ailie'. Thanks for that!💖

Jelly with a silent J?

This made me laugh!
OP you are being ridiculous. When people have names that are spelt differently, people just assume they have parents who can’t spell or are chavs.
Don't set your daughter up for a lifetime of having to spell her name out. She will not thank you for it.

Hey Fluffy, there's an over usage of 3 vowels is 'Ellie'😂

Allie, with Alison on the birth certificate
Thanks for that, thinking that the sensible route now is probably 'Allie'💖

Ayllie or Aellee changes the sound from Ellie.

She will look like she had parents who were uneducated and could not spell...:
