Currently pregnant with baby number 2 and stuck between these two girls names. Our DD has a name that goes well with either. Thanks for any opinions ☺️

I love both names and they're both on our girl list. I don't really understand all the comments where people obsess about old songs related to a name. As soon as a child takes on a name, it becomes their name, not a meaningless name from an old song. And an odd song from the 60s will definitely be meaningless in their peer group in another 20/30 years - by then it will be almost a century old!

Yes but ops come to ask what the opinions and associations of a name are for people.

We can't say what someone in the future will think - and absolutely any name will become the child's name once they have it, in which case the op might as well not ask at all if that fact alone is sufficient to redeem it.

She asked what people think. Lots of us clearly don't like it and for some, if they try to unpack the reasons for that, associations like songs can and will be a part of that. But it may not be: maybe people are thinking it's that, but in fact they just don't like it for no reason except the sound of it ( or in the case of Sadie it does look as though it has "sad" as a stem.) Who can really say why we don't like something - but it seems helpful to an op to at least try to articulate.

There is no point answering if it's only to say "depends what you like" - like one of those maddeningly vacuous waiting staff at restaurants when you ask for a recommendation , which is really what op is doing here. An answer that says "I wouldn't suggest the risotto because they use a lot of pecorino which is a cheese I dislike " is helpful to someone who might love it or dislike it.

Lucy is much nicer, and more timeless

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 09/12/2025 19:25

Lucy. The name means 'light.'

Joolsin · 09/12/2025 19:24

Sadie. I've never met a nice Lucy!

YellowCherry · 09/12/2025 19:22

Lucy

Lucy!

namechanged221 · 09/12/2025 18:54

Lucy. It's a lovely name.

Sadie, no

Mosaic80 · 09/12/2025 18:53

Lucy is lovely. And surprisingly uncommon in my area at least. I haven't heard of any recently so not super popular.

LuckyCharmz · 09/12/2025 18:49

Lucy. I don’t like the name Sadie at all.

alexdgr8 · 09/12/2025 18:45

Lucy is much better.

Sadie always looks sad and dismal to me.
It's not a proper name.

everdine · 09/12/2025 18:45

Lucy is lovely!

I haven't heard of/seen that!

I think of 'in search of little Sadie' by Bob Dylan. But then, I am not sure what that song is about-perhaps it's just as bad.

Neither had I, but people kept saying "Sadie, cleaning lady" which I thought was just a rhyme but then I heard it was a song and googled it and it is ...um, eye-opening in terms of what was once seen as acceptable! I think its from the 60's

Jollyjoy · 09/12/2025 18:40

For me, Lucy is just dull as dishwater. Sadie much more interesting, more personality to the name.

ChristmasinBrighton · 09/12/2025 18:38

Lucy

Lucy is lovely - and underused at present.

If you google the Sadie Cleaning Lady video it will put you right off: scantily clad ladies dancing about with maid's bonnets and lyrics such as "Scrub your floors/Do your chores/Dear old Sadie"

It's hard to think of anything more stomach-churningly misogynistic that could be put to such a light-hearted tune and has put me off the name for life.

It somehow manages to belittle both young healthy women (the dancers smiling inanely, like half-dressed 1950's housewives) and older women (her aching knee's not getting any younger/Her red detergent hands/ have for years not held a man's)

Sadie is lovely. Lucy is just ok.

IdaGlossop · 09/12/2025 16:15

Lucy. I love the connection with light.

Myoldbear · 09/12/2025 16:12

I like Lucy best.

IsThisTheWaytoSlamMyPillow · 09/12/2025 16:07

I’ve always loved Lucy so this would be my favourite of the two. I see it as a name which suits every age from baby to adult, whereas I only envision Sadie as an adult (a middle aged one at that!).
