Hi all,

I have a boy and a girl and we are expecting our third, we are going to have a surprise and not find out the gender before they’re born.

I am looking for a name that flows well with our other kids - I would say not overly common but still one that people will recognise, know how to spell, reasonably classic.

My son is Flynn and my daughter is Opal

Current ideas for boys - Austin, Jasper, Orlando, Cassius, Conan

For girls - Florence, Fleur, Edith, Cecilia & Violet

Names that we can’t use - Joseph, Gabriel, Alexander, Hugo, Penelope, Amelia

Jasper and Cecilia

KarriTreeSullivan · 03/12/2025 17:05

Just a note on Austin, my son has a friend called Austin and he and his friends, in the loveliest way, they're not being mean, quite often call him Austin-Texas. It's like you can't say one without the other. Austin doesn't mind either, they all have a lot of silly names for each other as a group. but just thought I'd mention it!

BowlyLarr · 03/12/2025 16:57

Flynn, Opal and…

I would rule out Florence and Fleur since you already have a name beginning with Fl. Also rule out Jasper since you have one precious stone already (don’t want any one of the three children feeling the odd one out).

I have an aversion to Viole(n)t and Edith (but I like Judith so clearly there’s no logic to me). Cecilia is lovely, or just Celia.

Orlando and Cassius are a bit elaborate for me. Austin goes well with Flynn. Conan = barbarian, but what about Conrad?

BreatheAndFocus · 03/12/2025 16:35

Jasper or Violet. Those go best IMO.

Zempy · 03/12/2025 05:35

Jasper or Violet.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/12/2025 02:22

Austin or Jasper
Cecilia or Violet

Pryceosh1987 · 03/12/2025 02:03

Rayban for a boy. Emerald for a girl. I assume you could name another precious gemstone for the girl.

mathanxiety · 03/12/2025 01:59

Austin or Violet would go beautifully with Flynn and Opal.

Flynn and Austin are both surnamey, and Opal and Violet are both names from the natural world.

Love Cassius from your bits list. Other suggestions include Caspian, Elliot, Oakley, Connor, Casper and Fenton.

Your girls list are more traditional, ‘Granny’ names (or Dowtown Abbey) and yet your existing daughter has a more boho name. They’re all fine, but other suggestions include Saraphina , Amber, Rowena, Crystal, Cassie, Trinity and Meredith.

I like Oakley but not sure about it with Opal.. I think after reading the comments about the F names I may look for a separate initial so they’re all different.

Amber is lovely. I like Trinity but my daughter loves the YT channel Trinity & Madison so that’s all I think of now 😩😂

As others have said, Fleur and Florence are too tongue-twistery with Flynn. "Opal's got a playdate, so Flynn 'n' Fleur are going to the park." It doesn't work.

From your boys' list, I'd go for Cassius.

The 2 F’s were putting me off a bit and now reading that I agree they’re too close, shame. Thank you!

I like Florence, Violet, Cecilia and Jasper
What about Cecily, Louise, Primrose, Sibyl or Sybil, Mabel, Maud, Elaine or Ellen, Frances, Daphne

or maybe Julian or Jules, Toby, Glenn, Silas, Leon, Paul or Peter, Giles, Arlo, Dylan, Roland, Elias, Nathan

I really like Mabel!

I Love Arlo & Dylan but have friends with kids with those names.

I love Fleur and Florence but not with Flynn. Not so keen on Cecilia and Violet is OK.

My favourite would be Flynn, Opal & Edith. Edith is lovely but I agree a bit less boho than Opal. Alternative suggestions: Sylvie or Constance.

For boys, I don't like Austin, Orlando, Cassius, or Conan (the barbarian). I do like Jasper but I prefer Caspar (and has the advantage of not being on a jewel theme).

Hazelmaybe · 02/12/2025 16:30

Definitely Cassius
Fir a girl…Juno?

justpassmethemouse · 02/12/2025 13:08

Flynn, Opal and Austin
or
Flynn, Opal and Violet

ruralwanderer · 02/12/2025 12:19

I think Austin and Edith go best with your other two.

LeftFooter · 02/12/2025 12:13

Austen and Cecilia. Lovely!

WildCherryBlossom · 02/12/2025 11:49

Not Austin. Opal and Austin are both cars.

Not Florence of Fleur with Flynn. Too much “fluh”.

Jasper I love, and it’s a semi precious stone like Opal (far better synergy than cars)

How about Viola as a slightly softer sounding alternative to Violet?

Emanwenym · 02/12/2025 11:05

Austin - ok
Jasper - ok
Orlando - a bit too long. Orlando
Cassius - ok - will be Cass. People will say it as Cash-us, which spoils it.
Conan - the Barbarian

Florence - ok, a bit matchy with Flynn
Fleur- ok, a bit matchy with Flynn, sounds better in a rhotic accent
Edith - ok
Cecilia - too long and frilly
Violet - will be Vi

Austin or Violet

Pemba · 02/12/2025 10:09

I love Cecilia, and it has the benefit of being fairly unusual as well. There's also Cecily, cute with a bit of a Victorian vibe. Prefer Viola to Violet, and it's more unusual.

I do like Cassius, but the trouble with it is, wouldn't it naturally shorten to Cass /Cassie? Very girly.
So maybe Conan? (if I could stop mentally adding 'the Barbarian')!

FracasFracas · 02/12/2025 10:04

No advice, OP, though I’d go with Edith and Jasper — but every time I see your thread title I imagine two parents having a sudden-death penalty shootout to decide their baby’s name.

TempsPerdu · 02/12/2025 09:59

From your shortlists:

Flynn, Opal and Jasper
Flynn, Opal and Edith

Think these flow best and fit style-wise with your existing DC.

I also really like @user1492757084’s suggestions of Celia and Aster; both of those were on our shortlist for DD and I much prefer Celia to Cecilia (more streamlined, good Shakespeare connection and nicer meaning).

VioletMatilda · 02/12/2025 09:49

As others have said, Fleur and Florence are too tongue-twistery with Flynn. "Opal's got a playdate, so Flynn 'n' Fleur are going to the park." It doesn't work.

From your boys' list, I'd go for Cassius.

firstofallimadelight · 02/12/2025 08:05

Love all the girls names Florence in particular not keen on the boys , jasper is ok. Trying to think of something similar, what about Scout?

Onearmedscissor · 02/12/2025 07:38

Id go Austin and Violet.

I love Fleur but Flynn and Fleur is a mouthful
