Having a boy in Feb and need help narrowing our short list down, we're at a complete impasse:
Theodore
Jacob
Nathaniel
Tobias
Nicholas
George
Finley
Robin

Middle name will be Alexander.

I would choose Theodore (nn Theo or Teddy) or George don’t like others esp dislike Finley and Nathaniel

Happyhousehappyheart · 29/11/2025 15:59

I don’t like Jacob , too clunky or Robin, too wet, but love the others especially Alexander

ChocolateCinderToffee · 29/11/2025 15:56

All lovely except Finley.

Fifthtimelucky · 29/11/2025 15:55

I think the two that go best with Alexander are George and Robin.

BillieWiper · 29/11/2025 14:32

I love Finley and like Robin.
I like Theo but not mad on the full Theodore.

What about Finbar, Fenton, Flynn?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 29/11/2025 14:28

Don’t like Nicholas (wet) and Tobias
all the others are great, but Jacob is my favourite.

scottishGirl · 29/11/2025 14:20

I like all except Tobias.
I would spell Finlay with an A not E. But im Scottish so maybe the E way is more common in other parts of the UK

HighburyHope · 29/11/2025 12:55

Jacob, Nicholas and George are my favourites. Nice list!

LoudPlumDog · 29/11/2025 12:43

I like:

George Alexander
Nicholas Alexander

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 29/11/2025 05:38

I like Jacob best. Then Nathaniel.

MissedItByThisMuch · 29/11/2025 05:24

Love Nicholas. It’s a classic that’s currently underused. Also like Tobias/Toby.

YellowCherry · 29/11/2025 04:59

Lovely names OP. My favourites are Jacob (Jake), Tobias (Toby), Nicholas (Nick) and Robin. Least favourites Nathaniel and Finley.

PennyRest · 29/11/2025 04:56

Nicholas or Alexander. Both lovely names.
Not keen on Tobias or Finley as Tobys and Finns and their variations are really overused where I live. Same for Theo and Jacob actually.

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 28/11/2025 21:27

I like Theodore and Tobias, but they’re all lovely. Think about how they will suit your son at different ages (or not). And what the likely nicknames will be. Once he is born, choose one and don’t think about it anymore. You will then love the. And because you love him!

Moreteaandchocolate · 28/11/2025 13:12

I love Toby, George and Jacob

I like all the others but would probably personally avoid Nicholas (knickerless), Robin (getting popular for girls) and Theodore (will date to 2020s as it’s the name of the decade).

DuchessOfNarcissex · 28/11/2025 10:48

Jacob - classic and Jake is nice
Tobias - like but prefer Toby
George - fine but popular

Robin - ok, R names like Roman and Reuben too popular
Nicholas - like, will be Nick, don't like Nico

Nathaniel - too long and breathy sounding, don't like Nate/Nat
Finley - too trendy, a bit wet sounding. Finn is better
Theodore - too long and whiny sounding, dislike it and it's overused

Which sounds best with your surname?
Initials - watch that they don't make a word.

Mumofgirls2017 · 28/11/2025 10:13

George or theodore

nicholas is quite unusual these days quite like it actually

dontforgetme · 28/11/2025 09:31

From your list I love Nathaniel and George. I’m not keen on Nathan as a nm but really like Nath. Finley and Theo would be a big no from me due to knowing a dozen of each.

Mischance · 28/11/2025 09:27

I would ditch Finley

BatsInHibernation · 28/11/2025 09:24

Theodore
Jacob
Nathaniel
Tobias
Nicholas
George
Finley
Robin

Nothing wrong with any of these names imo

But, my favourites are, in order

Robin
Nicholas
Tobias
Nathaniel

Love all four of these

muddyford · 28/11/2025 09:20

Love Nicholas. The rhythm of Nicholas Alexander is wonderful.

CandyCaneKisses · 28/11/2025 09:18

George or Finley

CheeseIsMyIdol · 28/11/2025 09:16

Nathaniel is the best. Nicholas is nice, too.

Don like Tobias or Finn at all.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 28/11/2025 08:49

Nice list

I'd get shot of Theodore, George and Finley because they've all been done to death for a while, plus Robin as its newly v popular for boys and girls.

Of the rest I'd personally go for Nicholas as it's underused right now, and a great name.

I also like Jacob and Nathaniel - they are both fairly popular - Jacob for a couple of decades, whereas Nathaniel is a name of the moment, so maybe Jacob as second choice, Nathaniel as third.

I love Tobias, but the chances are he'll be Toby which I find a bit wet. Like Nathaniel it's become moderately popular recently.

Although saying that, I went to school with Samuel nn Sam and his initials were SAM which was pretty cool!

That really is cool!

And I miss all the Sams of my youth!
