Still No Name for Baby Girl

KLRJ · 18/11/2025 12:32

Officially made it to two weeks with no name for baby girl and I feel beyond awful about it! Every name seems to have something about it that I don't like.

-Faye: love the name in theory, but calling her it seems awkward and clunky because of the single syllable and there being no obvious ways to make it seem affectionate

-Ruby: absolutely love it, sounds SO cute with our surname (Robson) but at #41 with 1020 girls given the name last year, it's more popular than my other children's names and I worry about her being surrounded by others with the same name

-Rosa: also love it, sounds incredibly classy and goes quite well with our surname (not as well as Ruby), but obvious nickname is Rosie which I don't like and is also very popular

Help me decide please! Also I'd love any other suggestions if anyone has any please. Had a couple of suggestions of Romilly on my last post which I thought was super cute but husband disagrees 🫠

My sisters name is Faye, but it is spelled Fahy. Her affectionate name was Fahyzee. I have no idea how it would have been spelled but it was Fay Z! :)

Squirrelmirrel2 · 24/11/2025 19:10

I love love love Ruby, beautiful name. I love Rosa too.
I totally agree about not wanting a name that's too popular, but I think Ruby won't be an issue.
To the posters who say popularity shouldn't be an issue. In my son's year of 2 classes, there are 6 versions of Isabella/Isabelle/Bella. Some go by Izzy, some Bella, some full name, but of course this changes. An Isabelle suddenly decides she wants to be Belle etc. I have totally given up knowing who he is referring to.
I would not pick a top 10 name for this reason, but Ruby being top 40 would be fine I think.

Firebird83 · 22/11/2025 18:52

I actually know a Rosa Robson

DuchessOfNarcissex · 22/11/2025 10:59

@Soccermom2020 , Evie is in the top 25 girls' names in Ireland, plus all the Eves, Evelyns etc who will probably be Evie. May and Rose are common middle names, and hyphens ruin both parts of the name. Mia is a top 10 name and Orla is a bit middle-aged.

quillfram · 22/11/2025 08:40

Ruby Robson has a very pornstar ‘Jenna Jamison’ type feel.
also a bit clunky with the repeating r and b, not the nicest sounds together.
i’d go for something different personally.

Soccermom2020 · 21/11/2025 22:34

Not so much here in ireland there isn't least not at this part you could always go with Evie-May Evie-Rose, if you wanted.
I also suggested names
Orla
Mia and
Ruby.

”Rue” as in “regret”? Because that’s literally what it means.
really?? Why would you do that to a child?

Rue is also the name of a plant.

RoxyRoo2011 · 19/11/2025 19:03

Funny. I know a Remy and she is definitely a girl

Have you ever seen Ratatouille or been to France? Definitely a boys’ name.
I would wager that the female Remy that you know is going to have issues with this all her life. Poor kid. What were her parents thinking?

LadyGAgain · 20/11/2025 00:25

Why would a NN for Rosa be Rosie? Same length! Rose would be more obvious as a NN.

quillfram · 20/11/2025 00:12

Sorry, pressed send too early! Meant to say, these are just a few lovely names which sounds nice with your surname to me :-)
Good luck with choosing! Its fair enough taking a while, its an important decision! :-)

quillfram · 20/11/2025 00:10

Would avoid anything like Ruby/romilly etc as sound far too trite with your surname.
Eleanor Robson
Juliet Robson
Clara Robson
Annmarie Robson
Magdalene Robson
Annika Robson
Constance Robson
Florence Robson
Thea Robson
Isabel Robson
Emily Robson
Isla Robson
Penelope Robson
Adaline Robson
Freya Robson
Ursula Robson
Maisie Robson
Vivienne Robson
Alexis Robson
Catharine Robson
Imogen Robson
Sophie Robson
Helena Robson
Astrid Robson
Camilla Robson
Tabitha Robson
I personally think one or three syllable first names go better with your surname than two syllable.

ThreeRsAndMe · 19/11/2025 21:03

If you love a name then go for it or there will always be something holding you back. I don't know any Ruby's, I do know one Rosa and she's just Rosa, not Rosie. My daughter is Rosalind and gets called Rozzy/Rozi/Roz.

Remy is a boys’ name…

Funny. I know a Remy and she is definitely a girl

RoseRedorDead · 19/11/2025 07:52

What about Fionne, nickname Fay or Fi?

Or Ffion, to actually spell it correctly?

Angelil · 19/11/2025 18:56

RoxyRoo2011 · 19/11/2025 07:32

Sorry, just thought of another - Remy? Remy Robson possibly works better than Ruby or Rosa. Although, if you like Ruby go with Ruby. It’s a beautiful name and not as common as you think. I chose a name that was not at all popular when he was born and so did a million others lol. I hear it ALL the time and he’s one of two in his class.

Remy is a boys’ name…

NadjaofAntipaxos · 19/11/2025 17:11

I have a Rosa and nobody has ever called her Rosie or anything other than Rosa.

It doesn't get shortened although she's still in primary school so we will see what teenage years bring! I still love it. It's a classic but not hugely popular and I think it doesn't immediately signify any class or background which I like.

Pinkandpurple225533 · 19/11/2025 17:10

If you like Rosa then go for it and just never use the nickname. My son has a name which is usually shortened to a certain nickname, most people with this name use the nickname. But we don’t like it so we always call him by the full version and so that’s what everyone now associates with him and nobody calls him anything else. If it helps I don’t think Rosa would usually get shortened since it’s the same syllables as Rosie

NewJobProblem · 19/11/2025 17:06

Ruby Robson - she sounds destined for great things in life!
Ruby Faye Robson would be a lovely combination.

MyAzureMoose · 19/11/2025 16:35

I am a Faye and have always been happy with my name. With Faye/Fae being old English for 'fairy' my mum always called me Tink or Tinkerbelle when I was little, and she often still calls it me now. I do love the nickname Effie though nobody has ever called me this, I've just never considered it to be a nickname for Faye.

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 19/11/2025 15:44

Ruby is lovely. It’s perfect really- not so common that they are everywhere, but not so unusual it’s unheard of and she spends her life having to correct people or spell it out.

Rosa is also lovely, but Rosie is far more common than Ruby, and she will get people reading it as “Rose” in error. I have a name with one letter different to a more common name and it happens all the time.

I am biased though. If my youngest had been a girl then she was going to be a Ruby.

Baninarama · 19/11/2025 15:33

I know both a Rowena and a Rosalind that shorten their name to Ro - could be an option for Rosa?

KLRJ · 19/11/2025 14:29

Bella has been on my list but I've been slightly put off of it by my cousins lab! 😂 My grandparents had a dog called one of the very obvious nicknames for my name just before I was born, and so I've always refused to go by that nickname 😂

hahahaha that is brilliant. As brilliant as they are, labradors have that 'personality' which makes them so unique and if they are naughty too it's worse.

Usernamenotav · 19/11/2025 13:42

I can't help but think how pathetic it is that people will avoid a name that they love just because other children are named it.

What an odd thing to say...

Personally I can't help but think how pathetic it is to hide behind a keyboard and try to shame someone for having a differing opinion on their criteria for naming their own children, but each to their own I guess!

Hope commenting that made you feel better! 🥰

I work with new mums and I don't think we've seen a baby Ruby in ages! It's definitely less popular than it was in the late 00s/early 10s when my two were babies.

Also, it's ok to not name your baby yet - just try not to get too in your head about it!

Can I ask - are you or your husband teachers? Most of the new parents I meet who struggle for longer to name their baby have at least one teacher in the mix!

Not teachers, but I do run a toddler class franchise so I see lots of children with various names going through our classes and it has definitely made picking a name difficult! 🙈

All 3 are lovely names!

I don't think any are too common and you can control nicknames to some extent until they get big enough to choose their own.

Freya could be an alternative to Faye. We have a Frances which we love as not too unusual or common and easy to spell.

I'm personally not an alliteration fan but if you like it then just go for it, it will become her name and you won't be able to see how she could have possibly suited any other name after a few months.

Freya was one of my top names for my first daughter but I've since gone off of it, otherwise it would have been ideal!

I was also never an alliteration fan until I added Ruby to the mix!
