Is Nova a good girls name?

Friend is looking for new and unconventional girls names so I suggested Nova - what do people think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

A car. An attack at a music festival. One of the babies on Teen Mom. Probably niche but a dingy guesthouse in Jersey (formerly called Isis).

It’s a no from me.

That was my first thought too! 🥺

And mine.

It will always be associated with a violent terrorist attack so maybe not.

I had to google this (I knew about the attack but didn’t know it was called nova music festival) everyone I know refers to it as October the 7th.
I worked in a school and there was a couple of Novas just sounds like a regular name to me.

Its sad to say most tragic incidents are forgotten after years (except big ones like 9/11) and I highly doubt her classmates would think of this

winterbluess · 20/11/2025 09:36

Quite popular in america

It was actually the name of the baby’s great grandmother. I just looked it up and it was used in the Victorian times right up to the 1930s when it went out of fashion. Food for thought.

Oh that's really interesting. I've never heard it and it has a really modern sound to me!

GetToHeaven · 20/11/2025 09:14

I’ve met quite a few over the last few years. I don’t like it personally but clearly lots do.

I think that is slightly different though because both Daisy and Elsie were out of fashion/old lady names for some time, but not unheard of, whereas Nova is not a name I have heard before.

To me it sounds like a brand name, and oddly enough in the news last night an article on UPFs mentioned a Nova food rating scale.

That said, it isn't a horrible sound and, given I am not a fan of "name neologism", I think it is not a bad name on the whole. I can see how it might sound fresh and appeal to people who are bored of traditional names which I am not.

I know two. One is about 26 the other 7. There are others out there.
side note, I got slated when my eldest was born. people said “you can’t call a baby Elsie”. She’s 20. Now there are so many- little ones especially. Same happened to my mum who had a “daisy” 38 years ago. Again, it became a popular little girls name in time. It’s hard to predict if your name wont become mainstream.

I didn't make the connection until the next poster explained. I don't like it as a name though.

I'm not keen personally but my friend has a Nova and it's a perfectly nice name and fits in with a lot of names of this generation. If I liked it I'd use it.

Carlyove · 19/11/2025 12:37

I like it! Mumsnet notoriously have a hard time with any names that aren’t deadly dull.

i chose a slightly unusual name for my little girl. Non traditional name and I guarantee MN. Would hate it whereas in real life we have got so many compliments.

I’d go for it

I also love that show, it's my guilty pleasure. One mom has a Stella and a Nova, both names space/star themed

Stella is a name that I can only ever mentally envisage being screeeched!

Showing my age / terrible taste in trash TV but it seems to be quite a popular name on Teen Mom on MTV. So quite American and maybe not the classiest choice? I sort of assumed it was a modern form of Neveah

SnowFrogJelly · 19/11/2025 09:52

I prefer Seren

SnowFrogJelly · 19/11/2025 09:52

It is on the Archers!

Joleana · 19/11/2025 09:51

Calliopespa · 19/11/2025 09:37

In fairness, there is none of the backwards spelling gimmick: it is what it is in that sense,

True. It just strikes me as an American 'trendy' name because I only ever heard it from trash TV. That's really all I was trying to say

KilliMonjaro · 19/11/2025 09:45

Makes me think Champaign Super
How about Seren instead op? On a star theme…

Calliopespa · 19/11/2025 09:37

Joleana · 19/11/2025 09:12

No, not a version of Neveah; in the same ilk. Class-wise.

Maybe I should have said a modern version of Neveah 'etc' is that clearer? Like Abcde and Younique and Salleigh.

Not terribly popular then, considering around 300000 baby girls were born in 2023!

It is still far more than I'd have expected, as I've never heard of it as a name.

I'm not really a fan of non-traditional names generally so I'm probably a bit stiff and not a good person to gauge, but as far as names I've never heard of go, it probably is one I can see sounds quite cute and not twee for a grown woman.

I'm not particularly familiar with the car though, which might be influencing that. Rings a vague bell, but I'd never have made the connection without others pointing it out.

VikaOlson · 19/11/2025 09:11

Weird that you'd think it was a version of Nevaeh though!

Namechangedforspooky · 19/11/2025 09:11

My first thought was Vauxhall but having said that I like it as a name!

VikaOlson · 19/11/2025 09:11

Joleana · 19/11/2025 09:09

Yes of course I've heard of it. But as a name, that's where I've heard it.

I've heard of lots of words. Not all of them should be used as names.
