Harris…for a girl?

AIBU?

I misheard the name “Karis” a few weeks ago and thought, ‘Harris as a girl’s name, how cool.’

I’ve done some superficial research and it seems that Harris is mostly used a boy’s first name, if at all, as it is a surname, really.

But I think it’s very fresh and cosmopolitan, and I like the unisex vibe.

What comes to mind when you think of a girl called Harris? Thoughts welcome!

Too close to arris I.e. arse

This. Don't do it to your child OP.

Zitroneneis · 15/11/2025 15:36

Not any more masculine than Taylor

RuthW · 15/11/2025 15:27

Awful

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 15/11/2025 14:40

Harissa? Like the spice?!

MiddlingMarch · 15/11/2025 14:37

Harris is a boy's name.

And as for a PP suggestion, there is no way I could look at a tiny newborn girl and think "there she is, baby Michael".

Not all names are unisex. I mean, I can't imagine ever thinking of naming a boy "laura" or "gillian" or naming a girl "duncan" or "gregor"

Harris is great for an island, tweed, or as a boy/man name. Not for a girl.

lostintranslation148 · 15/11/2025 14:19

Would you like to be called Harris OP? I know I wouldn't.

lizzyBennet08 · 15/11/2025 14:13

Nice for a boy but not for a girl

Emanwenym · 15/11/2025 14:11

Carys is frumpy and middle aged. It was popular at the same time as Karen.

How about Herrison for a girl, @tiramisufiend ?

@WarrenTofficier I used "Syrup" for wig years before I actually knew what it meant 😂

I can honestly say that I've never come across syrup of figs in any way other than the rhyming slang.

My dad's family were originally East End but moved out of London before he was born and my mum is a northerner. Dad wasn't a cockney but did use a couple of rhyming slang terms regularly.

I love the cockney alphabet

'ay for 'orses
Beef or mutton
See for miles etc.

Needmorelego · 15/11/2025 13:56

I love it when a thread wanders off into a completely different conversation.....

The second half (rhyming part) is often dropped so a road is a frog and toad but would be shortened to frog rather than toad so it doesn't rhyme. A hair piece is a syrup (syrup of figs - wigs) not a fig.

Still not getting that rhyming slang thing 😂
'Arris still doesn't rhyme.
Oh well.

Yes!!!

Brilliant. I feel so proud 😂
My daughter is South London born so not close enough to count as a Cockney.
She's likes languages. I might suggest this as her next project.

Needmorelego · 15/11/2025 13:41

Ooooh I might know this one.
"A fiver for my pocket" 🤔🤔
Have I got it right?

Yes!!!

I lived in Tower Hamlets and then Hackney for over a decade - it really was fascinating, I loved it! My local cashpoint used to have a cockney option you could choose if I ever needed a lady godiva for my sky rocket!

Definitely 😂
I am quite fascinated by Cockney Rhyming Slang but I do end up thinking "huh?" a lot of the time.

Well it was invented to confuse outsiders.

Definitely 😂

I think it’s very fresh and cosmopolitan
😂

🤔 It's a second iteration of rhyme. Bottle and glass = arse. Then Aristotle = bottle. And (H)arris from there. There is often double layering in cockney slang.

You can think it's ridiculous all you like, I know two people who decided against the name because of that link.

No.

The name Harris makes me think of the island and the tweed, both of which I have fondness for but neither of which would make me think: fresh, cosmopolitan or cool.

There all thousands of wonderful names out there for girls and lots of lovely unisex names, Harris isn’t unisex.

Yes - it evokes rural and traditional not cosmopolitan cool.

While there’s no intrinsic reason not to use the word as a name for either sex, it’s likely to be assumed to be male.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/11/2025 13:08

Needmorelego · 15/11/2025 12:08

What's wrong with that though?

Very nice on baked salmon.

Arlanymor · 15/11/2025 13:04

Needmorelego · 15/11/2025 12:52

Harris and Arse don't rhyme though 🤔
The Rolf Harris link is ridiculous because it's a common surname which 1000s of people have.
