Kitrick...?

So our son is names Kit. My husband and I put down Kristian on the BC as my husband wanted a 'full name'. I have never gelled with Kristian despite us only calling him Kit. If I were to change it I really like Kitrick! (I actually find myself calling him that when I want to full name bim). I just wanted to know people's thoughts on the name! I think it's Scottish and means 'true victory'!

I’m another one for leave it as it is. Please don’t give your child such an unusual name as Kitrick. When he’s an adult he will find himself having to explain “yes I know it’s unusual. No it’s not a family name. I don’t know it’s origin. I think my mum just made it up.”
Kit is a cute name for a boy and he has his full name on his birth certificate. If I were you I wouldn’t change it.

Lemonadepie · 29/10/2025 21:16

It IS actually a real name, apparently English & Irish in origin. There are a couple of famous Kitricks, including Kitrick Taylor.

abracadabra1980 · 29/10/2025 20:45

Awful. Just leave it.

Never heard of it, and I’m Scottish.

Same!

I thought kit was used as a diminutive of Christopher.

It is

How about Kester? - it's a Scottish form of Christopher.

Kitrick slightly gives the impression that the register misheard Patrick, although it also sounds like a game thrones character, which some might think is a plus

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/10/2025 20:32

I mean, Kitrick is a name. Not a great name but a real name. Kit on its own is a fabulous name.

user2848502016 · 29/10/2025 19:38

I would stick with Kristian but just carry on calling him Kit.
Don’t really like Kitrick, Kristian is much nicer

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 29/10/2025 18:40

Oh lord. Please don’t.

It's not Scottish, it's one of those American "my great great great grandfather was Scottish so I'm also Scottish and here are my children Kitrick, Ochaye and Haggis." names.

What on earth is wrong with Christopher if you're never going to use it anyway? That's what Kit is a diminutive of.

Edited

I have to say, this is just fantastic

BoringBarbie · 29/10/2025 17:50

How old is he? Why would you faff around changing his name?

Zov · 29/10/2025 17:49

It’s awful, just put his name down as Kit.

Squirrelmirrel · 29/10/2025 17:33

I'm glad you've got a sense of humour OP. Mumsnet certainly is brutal. I don't personally warm to Kitrick but it's your son.
I would personally stick to Kristian, but if you don't feel Kristian suits him then change his BC to Kit. When people choose a given name (Kit) and then an alternative birth certificate name, it's usually to give a child a solid traditional back up for formal occasions or job interviews or to give some gravitas to an otherwise informal name.
I don't think Kitrick is giving him a good stable back up to Kit personally, it's probably giving him a name he might be embarrassed by and want to hide from people.
It's the kind of name that if used daily for his whole life it would just be his name and would be fine, but to pull it out the wood work on special occasions would probably be quite embarrassing for him as he would be met with puzzled faces. Just my opinion of course.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 29/10/2025 16:06

You could double barrel it.... Kit-Rick (as its clearly just two names squished together)
or Rickit?

Itsbritneyb1tch · 29/10/2025 15:35

I would stick with it. But if you’re going to change it then just change the BC to Kit surely, especially if you never foresee him ever using Kristian

Great advice, thank you. 😊 I think I'm going to stick with it.

Not as brutal as a parent wanting to change a name from Kristian to Kitrick.

Thanks. Should have seen that one coming.
