Sylvia is horrible

tellmesomethingtrue · 28/10/2025 23:37

Sylvia
charlotte
Elizabeth

DuchessOfNarcissex · 28/10/2025 22:10

@OneWildandWonderfulLife , it makes me think of Tippi Hedren.

OneWildandWonderfulLife · 28/10/2025 21:59

Frankly, any of them but Marnie

DuchessOfNarcissex · 28/10/2025 21:54

@Everlore , I agree. Someone in my family has just named a baby (not a DGC) and I don't like it. I'm not going to say anything. The name is twee and very popular. It's also too close to another relative's name.
It's the sort of name where the baby will always be Name Surname, and the combination is quite ordinary, and the middle name dated.

If it was a DGC, I'd mention it.

Everlore · 28/10/2025 17:59

Personally, I think Sylvie is lovely, but they're all very sweet.
However, and I realise I am completely missing the point of this board, it really shouldn't matter what opinions I and other MN posters have, only you and your partner's opinions count.
I would say maybe wait till you meet your baby girl and then decide, but please let it be yours and your partner's choice, not random internet strangers, however well-meaning! Also, I would strongly advise avoiding asking any friends or family for their thoughts before you decide as they can try to prejudice you while you are still unsure. Just present your lovely baby with the name already decided upon and there's nothing anyone can do so they're more likely to keep negative thoughts to themselves. No matter how nice a name is, there will always be someone who hates it, usually for some personal or entirely arbitrary reason like they went to school with someone with that name who was horrible, which should have no bearing on you using it for your precious girl! Wishing you all the very best and congratulations on your impending bundle of joy!

Betsy spelled this way. My DD has it short for Elisabeth though.

It’s horrendously dated in France.

Possibly, but unless OP lives in France that’s not really relevant.

The top 100 baby names in France include Sarah, Paul, Martin and Diane - not sure you’d find many of those in UK baby groups as they sound dated here.

Different countries have different views in what is dated,

MsSmartShoes · 28/10/2025 14:07

Marnie or Sylvie - nice names for all
ages. Lottie is a safe sensible name.
The others are too cutesy.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 28/10/2025 13:59

Does it go with the surname?
Will you still like the name in 20, 30 or 40 years' time? Did I like it 10 years ago?

Perrie reminds me of Perrie from Little Mix Same here, and Peri-menopause, Kevin and Perry and Peri-Peri-sauce.

I like Billie, @IRFS23 but not Sylvie. Sylv is awful. Definitely East end granny vibes.

IRFS23 · 28/10/2025 13:32

I like billie and Perrie but they scored the lowest 😂

GofE · 28/10/2025 13:06

Hmm, not sure on one particular from the list,

My thought is to imagine this baby, and the name in use, when older. Ie: teenager, adult at work - they could become prime minister one day- how would the name sit?
Then make your decision :-)

PevenseygirlQQ · 28/10/2025 13:00

I like Lottie, I don’t agree you should use Charlotte, if you like Lottie and will only use Lottie, just use Lottie. Second Marnie.

Betsy is cute also.
Sylvie reminds me of an Eastend grandma who smokes 50 a day
Perrie reminds me of Perrie from little mix

I love Sylvie. It’s chic, underused and timeless.

I can’t stand Betsy, it’s way too cutesy and twee. Fine for a two year old but not a grown up.

I quite like it but I think the child needs to be given somewhere else to go with it, ie; an opportunity to call herself Elizabeth - or even Liz, Eliza etc - if Betsy starts to feel too cutesy.

ETA ditto Lottie

DuchessOfNarcissex · 28/10/2025 12:50

Lovely. A sister for Lettice perhaps.

Beautiful pairing.

I've not come across a Caley but it does strike me that Caley-Fleur could be nice.

Not really, Marc said like the Welsh word doesn't sound like Mark. Elis and Ellis sound different - only slightly, but different, if Elis said his name, I'd hear the likely spelling.
Same with Alys and Alis, Ellen, Elen and Elin, or Mathew and Matthew.

I have a friend called Marc (not remotely Welsh or French). He says it like Mark.

I think these days most people ask how people spell things?
I'm usually not that bothered. If in doubt (e.g. name I hadn't heard before) I'd ask.
I know a Caley, Kayleigh and a Kayley! I know a Kaleigh. Her parent said 'Kayleigh spelt K-A-L-E-I-G-H'

I've not come across a Caley but it does strike me that Caley-Fleur could be nice.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 28/10/2025 11:54

I don't think it is usable as a name @andjustlikethat1 .

I love Sylvie. It’s chic, underused and timeless.

It's not underused in my area or friendship group! I know 8 Sylvie's under the age of 5. Lovely name 😍

Parsleysalad · 27/10/2025 17:34

Charlotte nn Lottie

Why?

Lottie is a beautiful name in its own right 😍

Lottie or Sylvie

I thought Marnie was a nickname for Marianne (at least it is for the one I know - I think sibling couldn’t say Marianne and somehow mispronunciation Marnie stuck all the way into adulthood)

Lalalandy · 28/10/2025 10:39

Love Sylvie or Lottie (but would have Charlotte on BC)
