Would probably give him a nickname of Finney

It's a Scottish tradition, brought to America but also alive and kicking in Scotland.

It’s now a very American thing and I still think it’s silly. Surnames should be surnames.

JillyGiraffe · 30/10/2025 07:29

How about Finn, or Flynn?

It's not my thing personally, but I can see how people like it: cute on a little person, serious-sounding on a grown up.

I especially don't like surnames or place names for girls - Madison etc.

No, it’s awful. It’s a surname. I hate this American trend of using surnames as Christian names. McKenzie, Carlton, etc. Horrible.

I read a book called Chartbreak when I was 12ish about a girl called Janis who joined a rock band and her rock alter ego was called Finch. Has clearly stayed with me as a name! but agree with most of above comments.
It's by Gillian Cross if you want to seek it out

Not a fan personally, but I’ve heard much more unusual names at school!

What about something like Finnick if you like the nickname Finney?

Finnick is a bit too much like finicky.

What are your feelings on Finn op? I'm guessing you have thought of it if you've been exploring those sorts of names. Finney works as a nn, but leaves him with a better-accepted "proper" name.

TBH I've heard worse than Finch though.

WhyDidntIGetAnySoup · 29/10/2025 19:08

Too much like Felch

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 29/10/2025 19:07

American pie! And David Brent.

Finn is nice but finney doesn’t feel like it would transition well into adulthood.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 29/10/2025 19:00

Not good. Have you watched The Office?

TheEllisGreyMethod · 29/10/2025 18:59

Not to call a child surely

To kill a mockingbird would be the first thing that springs to mind.

My sentiments exactly

Moveoverdarlin · 28/10/2025 22:07

The odd bod from American Pie.

Eenameenadeeka · 28/10/2025 22:06

I'd go with Finn.

magicscares · 28/10/2025 21:18

Made me think of Cinch - Ryland & the purple adverts. Finn/ Flynn/ Finley are nicer imo.

No5ChalksRoad · 28/10/2025 21:14

Finch sounds like either a villain or an aged butler in an old movie.

I'm not sure why but to me it sounds like a gynaecologist.

No5ChalksRoad · 28/10/2025 21:14

Calliopespa · 28/10/2025 17:14

Actually as far as "have to be different" names go, I don't think Finch is the worst.

I'd still go for Henry or Alexander or something myself, but if someone else chose Finch I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Finney is getting a bit more problematic.

What about Vincent, nn Vinny? It's a proper, top drawer name.

Better than Finney.

this is a good suggestion.

and Vincent is dignified for his adult life.

Beenwhereyouareagain · 28/10/2025 18:06

Finch is lovely, especially when used with a full name that complements it.
How does Finney sound with those names?

Calliopespa · 28/10/2025 18:05

clamshell24 · 28/10/2025 17:37

Awful. Robin is a name, Finch isn't.

But Wren and Robin ARE names - so why NOT Finch?

I'm not normally an advocate for unusual names, but I don't think Finch is actually all that out there.

TheFretfulPorpentine · 28/10/2025 18:01

MrMucker · 26/10/2025 22:31

Once you realize that Finney sounds a bit like an Australian person saying "Fanny", it's hard to unhear. Sorry.

😂😂so very true!

clamshell24 · 28/10/2025 17:37

SheAlwaysHasToHaveTheLastWord · 28/10/2025 17:31

Absurd

Tolong · 28/10/2025 17:31

My sisters 3 sons are called finch, robin and raven.

PocketSand · 28/10/2025 17:24

Surname so would be Finch Finch!
