Stanley - Love it or hate it?

I love it

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I like Stanley.

There was one in my NCT group when DS1 was born. Not ever so common tho (none at school).

It, like my DS1's old-fashioned name, has the merit of being unusual yet still a known name.

Unlike James, for example. Conversation with DS1 "Oh look there's James" "which James?" "James from football" "which James from football?"

LOVE it

Brightfield · 07/06/2008 00:15

Hate it.

meglet · 06/06/2008 20:46

.... and Stan Smith, tennis player and inspiration for some seriously cool trainers.

belgo · 06/06/2008 11:40

I'm not mentioning the names we've chosen to anyone.

hannah001 · 06/06/2008 11:39

...I may have lost the argument when I included Stan Lee and Stan Marsh (South Parker)

belgo · 06/06/2008 11:33

Stanley Kubrick for a start!

hannah001 · 06/06/2008 11:25

Love it - as does DH - but we mentioned it as an option to the in laws and my folks too - and they all went absolutely crazily negative - something about how the child would never amount to anything if called Stanley. and "What famous person has ever been called Stanley.." (I don't think they listened as I listed several successful Stanleys in response). In retrospect the strength of the negative opinion is hilarious but it really hacked me off at the time I have since learned never to discuss it with them!

alittleteapot · 05/06/2008 23:24

Love it for a little boy or an old man but not sure about for in between...

suedonim · 05/06/2008 23:15

Hate it. The class bully when I was at primary school lived in a Stanley Road and the terrifying owner of the local corner shop was called Stan. I've been scarred for life by the name.

Swedes · 05/06/2008 22:45

Love it.

BibiThree · 05/06/2008 22:44

LOVE IT! Would have been a serious contender for us if we'd had a boy - 3 girls put a stop to that

ghosty · 05/06/2008 22:43

When my friend called her DS Stanley 8 years ago everyone thought she was being a bit odd. But it's become very popular now in England I hear. Haven't met an Aussie Stanley yet though. But then anything goes here anyway ...

circlesquare · 05/06/2008 22:38

In our house, Stanley is shorthand for a period. When they were "courting", my parents had a friend called Stanley who always turned up at the most inconvenient moment and the name kind of got transferred. So I think my parents would weep laughing if I ever tried to call a DS that.

Without that personal history, though, it's actually quite a sweet name.

imaginaryfriend · 05/06/2008 21:42

I like it. But not shortened to Stan.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 05/06/2008 21:40

Like it. Quite a few round here, but it's not ubiquitous. Agree that some names - Barry, Alan, Roger - seem to have disappeared completely and unlikely to return!

izzybiz · 05/06/2008 19:24

umlellala was a joke, hence the

EyeballsintheSky · 05/06/2008 18:51

Love it. It's on my shortlist for ds1 if he ever makes it out of my imagination into reality!

Confederate · 05/06/2008 18:46

I have never heard of this name before.

amyjade · 05/06/2008 18:46

My mum had a cat called Stanley!!

cupsoftea · 05/06/2008 17:27

pointydog · 05/06/2008 17:25

Risky.

SummatAndNowt · 05/06/2008 17:15
