Our name choices don’t seem very liked

DH and I have just had our twin baby girls, they are 3 weeks old and we have named them Gigi and Lola. We love their names and put a lot of time into picking them. We are a Anglo-Franco-Italian family so tried really hard to pick names that everyone would be a fan of.
Since then we’ve told family, friends etc. our babies names and got lots of “oh are the nicknames” and “oh that’s interesting”, which I guess just makes me feel really crappy. We haven’t registered the girls yet so we could change the names, but I’m not sure if I want to. Their full names are Gigi Apolline and Lola Gabrielle.

What are your thoughts?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
AliceMcK · 18/10/2025 20:13

I actually had people accusing my of kissing my GMs arse as my oldest name was almost identical to her name. I laughed and told people to fuck off. My child had the name I had picked out for her since I was a little girl.

My second child I had people laugh and ask if the name was made up.

Third I had actual family mock the name that was until I mocked their children’s names back and I had a damm site more ammo to use than them.

Fuck others, your children your names. I could understand if the names were bordering abusive but they are perfectly lovely names that mean something to you and your DH.

Saying that I do agree with @Findlebarr on longer/fuller names. My DH convinced me to use the fuller version of DD2s name even though I always had the intention of using the shortened version. I’m so glad he did as we use both as dose she. She will also have the choice to choose as an adult what she prefers.

I was fully coming on to see the crazy names you'd picked (sorry) but those are lovely! Congratulations and great name choices :)

Holdonforsummer · 18/10/2025 20:10

They do sound like can-can dancers, to be honest. Maybe christen them Georgina and Lauren and then let them use Gigi and Lola as fun nicknames?

MrsKateColumbo · 18/10/2025 20:07

I know The Kinks song is more current but the only lola song I ever think of is the one who dances at the copacabana lol

I think it's a fine name

I have to say I do like Gigi as in short for Giselle

Needmorelego · 18/10/2025 19:32

I have no clue what song you are referring to??
I am quite curious.

“Well I’m not the worlds most masculine man, but I know what I am, and what I am is a man, and so is Lola…L O L A Lola…” - Lola, by The Kinks.

It’s a great song. Better than “her name was Lola, she was a showgirl”….

stealthninjamum · 18/10/2025 20:05

I’m sorry I thought prostitutes too.

ResusciAnnie · 18/10/2025 20:04

I love them! Lola is far from unusual and Gigi makes a refreshing change from the popular names. Your family surely understand the international vibe. I can imagine those names suiting all ages and occupations. I like. Congrats!

MiceAsPie · 18/10/2025 20:04

@Needmorelego Lola by Thr Kinks. Have a google

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/10/2025 20:01

Your family/friends are rude. Don't name your kids to please others ffs. If you do that where does it end?

dijonketchup · 18/10/2025 20:01

GingerPaste · 18/10/2025 18:59

Sorry, but I agree with some of the PPs. The names make me think of ‘ladies of the night’. 😬

Same but maybe I am showing my age /out of date here. Like the way I was once upon a time told to never, never wear white heels. Or an anklet.

fuzzypeach · 18/10/2025 19:59

I think they’re gorgeous names and go well together for twins. I get where people are coming from when mentioning the connotations, but I feel that might be a generational thing and that it won’t be an issue for them growing up. I think you should stick with the names you’ve chosen and love. Don’t let others change your mind.

KittyEckersley · 18/10/2025 19:55

I love the names! Very sweet.

hereismydog · 18/10/2025 19:55

Disgusting that OP has posted about her newborn babies and people are commenting that they are prostitute/pornstar names 🤮 what an odd thing to do!

I think they sound quite cool OP! Middle names are especially gorgeous.

Ok being brutally honest I wonder if Gigi and Lola have a bit of a… well an air about them. My immediate connotations are Gigi the film about a child (future) prostitute, and Lolita the book about an abused teenager. The combination of the two kind of strengthens the association. It’s a real shame because I love the names and individually I wouldn’t be thinking of those characters.

You know what, as soon as I saw these names I thought they sound like porn star names! Without being mean it just came to my head! They don’t sound cute! They sound grown up IMO.

itbemay1 · 18/10/2025 19:51

Love them!

People get used to names. I hated my niece’s name at first. Couldn’t imagine her being anything else now tho.

Slobberchops1 · 18/10/2025 19:33

Sound like prostitute names

Congratulations on the birth of your daughters. You must name your girls as feels right for you, but I have to admit that your chosen first names brought up similar associations for me as well.

Naming them Gianna Appoline and Carola Gabrielle, might avoid any concerns. I think they are lovely options, and could work as nicknames Gigi and Lola.

Needmorelego · 18/10/2025 19:32

Ghhbiuj · 18/10/2025 19:28

I think lola might be because of the song about the cross dresser but your kids friends won't ever be exposed to that song, so it's not weird

I have no clue what song you are referring to??
I am quite curious.

Ladamesansmerci · 18/10/2025 19:32

They're lovely. And even if I didn't like them, it's not my business. They're your children, name them names that you love.

I'm surprised anyone has even commented. The names are hardly out there. I'd understand if it was Storm and Chardonnay or something (both names I've come across in real life lol)

Needmorelego · 18/10/2025 19:31

Lola is lovely.
Gigi feels like it should be short for something.
Gabriella is lovely. Could Gigi be named Gabriella and you just call her Gigi for short for now and see how it goes as she grows up.

Endofyear · 18/10/2025 19:30

They definitely wouldn't be my choice for names, especially as I know two little dogs called Lola! But if that's what you've chosen and you love them then I would stick with them. People will get used to the names and it will be fine.
