Do you like Emily or Naomi better? Opinions welcome!

Naomi, Emily is a bit plain IMO.

Soulstirring · 13/10/2025 19:15

Naomi

Btowngirl · 13/10/2025 19:14

Emily, Emmy for short. I just hear nay as a nickname for Naomi & it makes me think of horses. Also the fact it’s I moan in reverse.

Solidandstripes · 13/10/2025 19:12

Emily is nicer (but more popularly user)
Naomi is also very nice.
go with the one you are slightly leaning more towards!

@ThatBeverleyMacca , your post is similar to my experience. 'Why do you say your name is Anneliese when it's Annabel?' type comments, or 'I know how to spell it!' (You don't)

DC have names that are easy - something like Paul and Anna. (not the actual names)

Emily has been popular for decades and you're probably noticing it more.

While Emily is a very pretty name and perfectly lovely, it's been pretty much popular in every generation for centuries (might be a slight exaggeration!)! So I would pick Naomi, I really like Naomi, but, if like others have mentioned only if you are happy with correcting people with whichever pronunciation you prefer.

The thing is though, for most of her DD’s life it will be her who has to do the correcting, rather than the OP, and there is no way of knowing whether it will bother her or not. I have a name that has multiple pronunciations (not Naomi, but one mentioned in a previous post), and I find it so awkward to correct people. Some people can also be really rude about it: I have had people insisting that their pronunciation is correct and I am wrong, been asked repeatedly “but why is it not <other pronunciation>, been told “Well I am going to call you <other pronunciation> anyway as it sounds classier”, etc. Some will also think you are petty/pernickety for correcting them regardless of how polite you try to be. However, some people don’t find it awkward to correct people at all and I wish I could be more like them Grin

Because of my experience, my number one criteria for my own DC’s names was that they had no ambiguity in pronunciation, and ironically for this thread I now have baby Emily sleeping on my lap. I wonder if it is about to have another mini-resurgence, as I know another baby Emily and there have been a lot of threads mentioning it in the last few months, although I might have just been noticing it more as I was considering the name myself.

Of the two, Emily. I don't really like Naomi, and the pronunciations vary too much. I've heard at least 4 different ones.
(NAY-uh-mi, Nay-O-mi, Nigh-O-mi, NIGH-o-mi. I only like the 1st)

indoorplantqueen · 13/10/2025 09:33

Emily thought it is so popular. Naomi is nice but the 2 different pronunciations would annoy me.

Dishwater · 13/10/2025 09:31

Emily but it is very popular.

user2848502016 · 13/10/2025 09:28

Emily, I always find Naomi a bit awkward to say and there’s the “Nay-omee” or “Nigh-omee” issue

WildCherryBlossom · 13/10/2025 09:18

Naomi is beautiful but the different pronunciation options slightly put me off (see also Esme, Evelyn, Helena).

Pemba · 13/10/2025 09:10

Emily is still lovely, I'd go for that. Naomi is fine though.

dailyconniptions · 13/10/2025 09:07

Naomi, as Emily is ultra boring. But the incorrect pronunciations would drive me potty. I assume you'd be saying 'nay omi'?

Bigpinksweater · 13/10/2025 08:38

Naomi. Emily is really plain and a bit twee

ChikinLikin · 13/10/2025 08:01

Emily is a great name.
Heads up though, I think there is a new Bagpuss coming out, so might become even more popular.

Mumofgirls2017 · 13/10/2025 07:59

Emily

BoleynMemories13 · 13/10/2025 07:42

I've never understood the "I prefer _ because it's less popular" opinion. There's usually a reason for that! Emily is much nicer imo.
