We are due our first baby - a baby boy in mid November but we are really struggling with names.
The middle name is going to be George after my dad.

Our top name was Archer, but when I told my mum, she quite angrily said it wasn’t a real name and I should be using Archie, as Archer sounds stupid. So it has put a spanner in the works and now we regret telling her our front runner.

The rest of our list includes:
Wilf
Charlie
Otis
Hugo
Seb (Sebastian)
Tobie (Toby)

We don’t want anything too out there but also don’t want anything too common. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
Middle name George.
Surname starts with a W if that helps.

Thank you :)

I've got two pregnancies in my immediate family. If either of them told me that they were going to use a name that I thought was 'not a real name' or actively disliked... I would smile, tell them it was lovely and reason that I would get used to it.

Not my baby, not my choice. Tell your mum that.

Needmorelego · 08/10/2025 09:37

I think Hugo George sounds a good name.
Archer is a bit.....I don't know?
Do you have a background of archers in your family? Makes me think of Robin Hood.
But if you really like it then use it.
He probably will be Archie/Arch at some point in his life.

ApricotCheesecake · 08/10/2025 09:36

Of your list, I like Seb and Toby (not Tobie).

BrightSpark10 · 08/10/2025 09:34

You should see faces of my family when I said I like name Bartholomew 😆

FictionalCharacter · 08/10/2025 09:32

Just adding to the chorus of people telling you it's your choice not your mum's. But as well as that, if you give in to her telling you what to name him or not name him, what else will she be dictating to you?

Rottenbanana250 · 08/10/2025 09:17

I like Archer and think it's much nicer than Archie (incidentally, there are SO many Archies/Alfies in my school and I'm forever mixing them up)

I'm biased as it's DS's middle name but I like Sebastian (Seb is very cute) and think it goes nicely with George. My DM was horrified at DS1s first name but it didn't take her long to get used to it so I say go with what you like best!

rainbowstardrops · 08/10/2025 09:12

If Archer is your favourite then bloody go for it! It’s got nothing to do with your mother, or anyone else apart from your partner.
Go for it!

Emsie1987 · 08/10/2025 09:09

I have a Jack and a Benjamin. Benjamin was supposed to be George but didn’t feel the name matched him when born.

other names we had were

charlie
elliot
hayden
Dylan
Joseph

1984Winston · 08/10/2025 09:06

Best thing I ever did was not tell anyone my eldest name before she was born, I know lots of people didn't like it (its a bit of a marmite name!) But they soon got used to it, including my picky MIL. Use Archer, lovely strong name!

Elephantangel1991 · 08/10/2025 08:58

Go for Archer. It's your choice. She will grow to like it because she will like him, and he will become the name.

2chocolateoranges · 08/10/2025 08:55

My mum didn’t like our chosen boy name, said it sounded ridiculous with our surname. We called him it anyway and a year down the line my mum said she couldn’t imagine him called anything else.

dont let your mum dampen your name choice, she chose your name , she doesn’t get a say in your baby’s name.

Peonies12 · 08/10/2025 08:54

NEVER share your baby names in advance! Terrible idea. Only share once baby is here and you've made a 100% decision. I do think Archer will get confused with Archie, which is far more commonly known. Otis is a lovely name.

Toomanywaterbottles · 08/10/2025 08:53

Archer is fine. I prefer it to many of the other slightly babyish names on your list.

CuckooPond · 08/10/2025 08:49

OP, if you’re old enough to have a baby, you’re old enough to recognise that your mother doesn’t get a veto on what you call your baby.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 08/10/2025 08:47

Our top name was Archer, but when I told my mum, she quite angrily said it wasn’t a real name and I should be using Archie, as Archer sounds stupid.
It is a name - a surname, and it's not good as a first name.

Wilf - fine if short for Wilfred
Charlie - like
Otis - don't like
Hugo - ok
Seb (Sebastian) - ok
Tobie (Toby) - like Toby but Tobie is awful

How about Danny? Your mother can DeVito it. Smile

SparkyBlue · 08/10/2025 08:04

If you love Archer go for it. Otherwise you will regret it and I can almost guarantee that in 12 Months time a neighbour or relative or whoever will use Archer and your mum will come out with “doesn’t it grow on you all the same isn’t it a nice name” and you’ll want to explode. I don’t love the name but it doesn’t matter what I think. Of the names on your list I’d personally go with Charlie or use George as the first name but I love old classic (boring) names.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/10/2025 07:58

King?

King George has a nice sound to it.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 08/10/2025 07:56

I think Otis is really cool.
I also think it’s very important that your mother understands that she doesn’t get a vote. Not in the naming of your child and not in any of the other millions of parenting decisions you will make over the next 20 years. She can offer advice or an opinion, if you ask for it but, even if you asked for it, you aren’t obliged to take it. Get used to saying “thanks for the advice mum but actually we’re going to…..”

itsgettingweird · 08/10/2025 07:49

Your choice but my favourite from your list is

Sebastian George followed by Hugo George.

sesquipedalian · 08/10/2025 07:48

OP, if you want to call your baby Archer, then do so - it’s your baby. Your DM will come round to it - she’ll have to if she wants to see her DGS, and I can assure you that as a DGM, a desire to see your DGC massively outweighs any misgivings about their name! My stepdaughter has called her child a name that neither I nor my DH care for, but you know what? She’s not our daughter, and thankfully we weren’t asked before the baby arrived. It’s entirely up to you and your DH, OP.

Rhond24 · 08/10/2025 07:45

Use Archer if you like it, and let her call him Archie if she must.
Don't use Tobie though. Spell it properly if you want to use it.

Kindnesscostsnothingtryit · 08/10/2025 07:43

Sorry I'm not a fan of Archer either, I just see a bow and arrow when I think of it. For me it was really important my parents liked thr names we chose but i get why others aren't as bothered. I do thi k they would grow to.love the nsne even if not keen to start with.

Love some of your other suggestions, especially Charlie. How about James, Alex, Henry, Tom.

ResusciAnnie · 08/10/2025 07:42

That would make me use Archer more 😁 she doesn’t get a veto unfortunately for her.

Archer was on our list, love it! Archie was the thing that put us off. Otis was also on our list, I vote Otis.
