Stuck for baby boy names, our favourite just got vito’d by my mother!

We are due our first baby - a baby boy in mid November but we are really struggling with names.
The middle name is going to be George after my dad.

Our top name was Archer, but when I told my mum, she quite angrily said it wasn’t a real name and I should be using Archie, as Archer sounds stupid. So it has put a spanner in the works and now we regret telling her our front runner.

The rest of our list includes:
Wilf
Charlie
Otis
Hugo
Seb (Sebastian)
Tobie (Toby)

We don’t want anything too out there but also don’t want anything too common. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
Middle name George.
Surname starts with a W if that helps.

Thank you :)

Tell your mum after the birth that you’ve decided on Karcher, but she can call him Archer or Archie for short. I was the only girl at school with my name, Cynthia, hated it, just wanted to be Susan or Jane or Wendy (That was a long time ago). I didn’t have a middle name which I could have used, so use Archer and give him a suitably boring middle name like Henry, George, Jack etc that he can choose to revert to later if he dislikes Archer.

NewHat · 08/10/2025 22:32

Just don’t mention it again. Archer is better than Archie but even it it wasn’t it’s not your mothers baby. However angrily she says it.

Bojosgirl · 08/10/2025 22:22

Your baby your choice. If you choose Archer or Archie people will shorten it to Arch.

JungAtHeart · 08/10/2025 22:21

I have two DDs but their planned boy names were Marcellus (Marco) and Blaise.

Misspotterscat · 08/10/2025 21:58

I told close family our top two choices. One family member text me the next day saying how much they liked one of the names and we should use that. It made up my mind that I would use the other name. It was my favourite anyway, and I don’t like being told what to do! Said family member now tells me how lovely the name we chose is. Go with the name you love.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/10/2025 21:40

I regret listening to my mum on my name choice, honestly it doesn’t matter what she thinks, it’s your baby go with the name you love.

YOUR MUM DOESN’T GET A VOTE.

Keep your name private until he’s born and you make the announcement.

I would agree with this. I kept my children’s name a secret and I defo think eyebrows were raised a bit with my second child’s name and had a said it earlier I know my parents would have tried to put me off. But they didn’t get a say and were told when my child had arrived and had the name and now no one would imagine them called anything else

Thefsm · 08/10/2025 21:36

If you will regret not going with your choice just do it. I let my family and in laws dictate names for first two and reject my choices. With the third I ignored them all and names him Felix. Guess how many people say it is a cats name or a cartoon character? Maybe two in 16 years. And it suits him.

I like Tobias, Sebastian (though I would shorten to bastian), Emerson, Remington, Maximillian, Willoughby, Everett, Theodore.

AdoraBell · 08/10/2025 21:36

I like Hugo, Seb and Toby/Tobie

It’s non of mothers business what you choose to name your baby.

CrispieCake · 08/10/2025 21:32

I'm afraid I agree with her on Archer (I dislike it) but she doesn't get to veto your names. If you like it, go for it.

The rest of your list is much more to my taste, but rather than Tobie, I'd go for Tobias. All these names do however have a different vibe from Archer (more traditional). If you want a name similar to Archer, I'd go for Arthur. But that's still quite traditional.

If you want a name with a vibe similar to Archer, I'd go for something like:

  • Lucas
  • Elijah
  • Wolfie
  • Elliot
  • Aiden
  • Liam
  • Ashton
  • Oscar
  • Max
  • Noah
  • Axel
  • Abel
  • Alfie
PhotoFirePoet · 08/10/2025 21:18

I like names from Nature; Alder would make a good boys name I think.
I also like Xavier

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 08/10/2025 21:18

Why the fuck are you listening to your mother?

You want to call the kid Archer, call the kid Archer. Yeah, she might end up calling him Archie, but my Mum ended up calling my daughter Banana instead of Lana for the first 10 years of her life, DD loved her special nickname.

PhuckTrump · 08/10/2025 21:11

carpool · 08/10/2025 21:05

If you like a name you should use it and not pay any attention to what your mother says. I will admit I was a bit 'meh' about DGS's name when I first heard it - didn't hate it but didn't love it. 5 years on and I couldn't imagine him being called anything else (and I most certainly never voiced my opinion or ever would have).

Needspaceforlego · 08/10/2025 21:01

Stick with Archer 🏹 nn cupid.

I'm quite traditional when it comes to names. But I definitely think Archer would grow on you. As someone else said its the same vain as Mason, Hunter and Cooper etc.

Rosscameasdoody · 08/10/2025 20:57

My step daughter had a baby boy this morning and has called him Freddie.

WonderingWanda · 08/10/2025 20:57

ResusciAnnie · 08/10/2025 07:42

That would make me use Archer more 😁 she doesn’t get a veto unfortunately for her.

Archer was on our list, love it! Archie was the thing that put us off. Otis was also on our list, I vote Otis.

Yep, same here. I'm still a rebellious teenager at heart and would be more determined to go with first choice now.

mylefthand · 08/10/2025 20:54

I love the name Archer. As pp said, your name, your choice!
My son is called Archie George, it is a great name.
Just to add, my mum wasn’t keen on Archie but she got used to it. He’s 21 now!

BananaCandle · 08/10/2025 20:48

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/10/2025 19:36

Go with your choice, not your mothers! Nothing to do with her. Archer is a great name actually - different, but not too out there. Also like Otis, Hugo and Toby.

Hugo, Otis or Toby. There you go OP. You’ve been told! 😆 I’d prefer Michael or Steven for a baby. The above names would be contenders to name a puppy 🥴

Seriously, just choose a name you like. Nobody gets to choose your baby’s name except his/parents.

StrongLikeMamma · 08/10/2025 20:47

Archer makes me think of Peach Schnapps 🍑🍸

DuchessOfNarcissex · 08/10/2025 20:35

Of course Archie's a real name. Thousands of boys are called it.

user2848502016 · 08/10/2025 20:26

Your choice, Archer definitely is a real name while Archie is actually not….so if that’s the one you love go for it (and he could be Archie as a nn anyway).
My favourite from your list is Sebastian though

partytimed · 08/10/2025 20:18

Call him Archer.

dhfoody47 · 08/10/2025 20:13

My son's first names are Harvey James 💙

ElaineBurdock · 08/10/2025 20:12

I never told my mum the names on our shortlist, instead I told her we were going to call the baby Wolfgang, even if was a girl, just to wind her up.

Our grandson was named after his grandfather, but my son, Billy Burdock, formally Wolfgang, now wishes he called him Thomas Mortimer. So we call him Thomas Mortimer when he's naughty, which is quite often.
