Hello all!
Looking for a middle name for Agnes and was wondering what the general public thinks of these:

Agnes Elsa
Agnes Elsie
Agnes Essie
Agnes Élise / Elise
Agnes Elyse
Agnes Elvira

As you can see from the poll I have a thing for names that start with an E 😜

Other names we like are:

Agnes Iris
Agnes Lovisa
Agnes Vilhelmina

Or can you think of names that you think we would like...

TY!😍

DD (year9) has 2 friends called Agnes and 1 Agatha (known as Aggie). It seems to be having a bit of a moment in S Yorks at least!

15 years ago we were all a bit 🤔 about Mabel and Elsie. My vote goes to Agnes Elsie.

TheChristieAffair · 27/09/2025 02:29

Agnes Jean
Agnes Marie
Agnes June
Agnes Wren

Most of the Agnes' I've known (all now dearly departed) had the nn Senga.

Not a name I would choose but all the names I associate with dead Grannies are back in fashion.

Thanks all for your different opinions 😉
Some of you had some great new suggestions on middle names, unfortunately we are already decided on Agnes so that won't change 😂

But it stands between:
Agnes Elise
Agnes Elyse
Agnes Lovisa
Agnes Anne
Agnes Anna
Agnes Sofia/ Sophia

I like Eliza, but I like Elise more.
I also like Vilhelmina, but it's just a bit long...

I might make a new poll between Elise, Lovisa, Anne and Sofia...💕

Agnes Elise is the beat of the bunch, followed by Agnes Lovisa and Agnes Anna.

The S in Agnes and the S in Sofia run into each other.

JillyGiraffe · 27/09/2025 00:35

I wouldn’t choose anything with an ‘s’. I feel like I need to pause slightly between Agnes and Essie. I voted Elvira.

I’m a teacher and Nancy, Betty, Margot, Mabel etc all featuring heavily now. I think Agnes is nicer than all of those. I like Agnes Elizabeth.

I agree, it's the best of a dodgy lot, and they very much back in vogue.

arcticpandas · 26/09/2025 20:20

Agnes Cécilia.

user2848502016 · 26/09/2025 20:17

Agnes Elise is nice
Prefer Agnes Iris though - I think Agnes doesn’t go as well with an “E” name sorry!

Whattodo2024 · 26/09/2025 20:06

’Ag’ is such a harsh sound!

Silverpaws · 26/09/2025 19:58

Bean

OMGitsnotgood · 26/09/2025 19:57

It depends on some extent on how it scans with your surname. I’m sure you don’t want to tell us your actual surname but does it have the same number or syllables as:
Smith; Johnson; Williams: Hetherington?

HugoYorway · 26/09/2025 19:52

I had a great-aunt Edith. She'd be about 120 now. 80-somethings would have names like Margaret, Betty (Elizabeth), Jean, Joan, Janet. Susan etc.

I don’t like it either but these type of names are coming back in fashion e.g Enid, Ethal, Maud…

I don’t know anyone in their 80s called those names (they are all called Barbara, Susan, Eileen, Joan etc) - I think those names are another generation back - so maybe born in about 1910.

I like the Spanish version Ines. I also can barely remember my DCs middle names - not sure what the point is unless you want to honour a family member.

thebeautifulsky · 25/09/2025 18:02

Love the name Agnes. I have many in my family tree.
Agnes Ethel
Agnes Edna
Agnes Edith
Agnes Eliza

Non e names:
Agnes Florence or Florrie
Agnes Wilma
Agnes Beatrice
Agnes Alma
Agnes Flora
Agnes Louisa
Agnes Ada

Seriously? Poor child, what a horrible combination of names

Alexandrine · 26/09/2025 19:43

Agnes Sophia is beautiful. The 2 syllables, followed by 3 syllables flows really nicely and Sophia softens the sound of Agnes.

Plus if you are choosing middle names for non-family/friend honouring reasons, then I always think it’s nice to find a middle name that’s a bit different in style to the first name. So in this case you would have less popular, but very hipster cool Agnes followed by very popular but more classic sounding Sophia. If Sophia hadn’t been a choice I’d have suggested something similar in style to it like Isabel, or maybe Louisa would also work well (I think Lovisa is nice but a bit too uncommon like Agnes).

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/09/2025 16:37

Agnes Sophia is lovely

AAAgness · 26/09/2025 16:32

With personal experience of Agnes, please choose a different name

hermitcrab · 26/09/2025 16:30

Love the name Agnes. Agnes Rose was my first thought before reading your list

BrightLightTonight · 26/09/2025 16:13

My grandmother, (if she were alive would be 140) was called Agnes May. Everyone called her Aggie

kiwiane · 26/09/2025 16:11

Rose

Good point, I agree with you 🤗

In fairness Champs Elysees also has an s, but the link still jumps out at me.

Taggys · 26/09/2025 16:04

Calliopespa · 26/09/2025 15:13

I like the traditional English spelling of Elise (rather than Elyse which makes me think of the Champs Elysee or Elysee Palace). Though it is an old form.

Good point, I agree with you 🤗

Elyse is horrible. Elise is ok.
