My husband and I have very different taste in names, and are really butting heads over what to name our daughter. We also have a long and unusual surname to consider.

Here is the full list, some are his favourites and some are mine so I'm keen to get some unbiased responses to them.

Daphne
Octavia
Tamara
Celine
Helena (Hel-ee-nuh)
Dorothy
Vera
Beatrix (Bea or Trixie)
Catherine (Kitty)
Clara
Tabitha
Margaret (Maggie)
Penelope
Maud

We are really struggling and as such have gone a bit off-piste in a desperate attempt to find something we can agree on.

Thanks in advance.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Dearnurse · 15/09/2025 02:09

I have a sophie middle name orla (means golden princess) & an Ellie I'm pregnant currently with a boy but I had chosen Alice as my girls name , I also like ivy & penelope .. congratulations x

User6761 · 14/09/2025 22:42

From your list, I really like Catherine but not Kitty. Conversely, I love Maggie but dislike Margaret.

I'm not keen on Clara but love the similar Cara and Ciara.

Not keen on Maud but I know a baby Claudie, and have grown to really like that.

I think Hel-ee-nuh/ Hel-ay-nuh is a more common pronunciation worldwide, I could be wrong but I think think Helen-uh is really more of a uk thing (maybe a bit in the us).

The island of St Helena is called Saint
Hel-ee-na by those who live there.

highincalifornia · 14/09/2025 22:18

I think Maud is lovely!

Plastictreees · 14/09/2025 22:16

@Dee51121 I don’t need to be patronised by you.

Dee51121 · 14/09/2025 20:41

Plastictreees · 14/09/2025 09:27

Why are so you hostile?

Helen-a is the most common pronunciation. There is no indication the OP is Irish. Other posters are saying the same thing.

As you were…

Sorry, I just thought you sounded narrow minded and wanted to point out that the definitive pronunciation of Helena isn't dictated by you. But as you say, as you were...

MimiSunshine · 14/09/2025 15:02

How about Meredith?

You seem to have a mix of older names or known but less used. So Meredith could fit.

Could be Meri, Edie or Edith for short if you want to have nicknames.

surprisebaby12 · 14/09/2025 14:52

Love Helena. Could have Lena, Leni or Elle as a nickname

GerberasAreMyFavouriteFlowers · 14/09/2025 14:49

Constance - Connie
Harriet - Hattie
Juliet
Margot
Victoria - Tori
Annabell
Belinda - Belle
Aurora
Angelica
Claudette - Claudie
Delilah
Francesca - Frankie
Giselle
Lysette
Mirabel - Mirrie
Seraphina
Vivienne
Wilhelmina - Winnie

Mauvehoodie · 14/09/2025 14:49

Daphne - love this one
Octavia - not keen, sounds a bit trying too hard somehow 🤔
Tamara - not keen, sounds a bit dated to my ear
Celine - I like but prefer Celeste
Helena (Hel-ee-nuh) - like but prefer Hel-ay-nuh pronunciation.
Dorothy - quite like and like Dotty
Vera - not keen
Beatrix (Bea or Trixie) - like
Catherine (Kitty) - like, don’t know any little Catherines
Clara - love
Tabitha - love
Margaret (Maggie) - love
Penelope - beautiful
Maud - I’m on the fence! It’s cute but also reminds me of a pinched scullery maid. Mabel is similar style.

Plastictreees · 14/09/2025 14:41

@Bettedaviss Yeah it’s really not that deep. No need for insults. 🙄

Bettedaviss · 14/09/2025 13:13

Plastictreees · 14/09/2025 10:02

I have never heard of Helena being pronounced Hel-ee-nuh. And this is my name!

Multiple posters have said the same thing.

In Scandinavia ee/ ay is very common :)
and as another poster mentioned, in Ireland the ee sound is common too. So whilst it’s your name, it’s very closed minded to state that only your way of pronouncing is “proper” - your way is perhaps standard in the UK but not around the world.

Gagamama2 · 14/09/2025 10:10

Love Daphne.

like the sound of Octavia but it’s a pity about the car connotations…Ottalie or Anastasia as alternatives?

Maud and Margaret personally would steer clear of.

Not very keen on all the others but that’s just a personal preference thing, they are perfectly fine names and many children are currently growing up with them. Agree with PP re Celeste instead of Celine

leadedwindows · 14/09/2025 10:10

No

Maud
Celine
Penelope
Margaret

Yes
Helena
Octavia
Catherine - but actually, rather Kate

All the rest, not that bad but not that keen either.

RonnyRite · 14/09/2025 09:57

Daphne - no, poor child
Octavia - no no no
Tamara - awful
Celine - no, just no
Helena (Hel-ee-nuh) - I like Hel ane a
Dorothy - nope
Vera - awful
Beatrix (Bea or Trixie) - passable
Catherine (Kitty) - Kitty?? are you having a cat
Clara - no
Tabitha- again I ask, are you having a cat
Margaret (Maggie) - classical, I like Maggie
Penelope - no
Maud - no no no

If you don’t want it to be popular and meet a few other children with the same name I would avoid:

Bea & Penelope as these are popular at the moment.

I don’t think Helena would be pronounced the way you like - more like ‘hell-uh-nuh’

Tabitha and Clara are sweet.

Daphne reminds me of scooby doo.

Daphne- cute!
Octavia- not a fan
Tamara- really not a fan
Celine- I like it!
Helena (Hel-ee-nuh)- I like it. My daughter is called Eleanor though so I automatically think Eh-leh-nuh
Dorothy- LOVE
Vera- like!
Beatrix (Bea or Trixie)- my favourite!
Catherine (Kitty)- never been a huge fan of the name Catherine but it is a perfectly nice name! Nothing wrong with it just not my personal favourite
Clara- cute! I like it
Tabitha- I really dislike the name Tabitha. Makes me think of cats like tabby cat
Margaret (Maggie)- not a fan (but think that’s because I have a very unpleasant aunt called Margaret 😂
Penelope- love! I really like Penny
Maud- really don’t like

Blushingm · 14/09/2025 09:29

What about Camille (NOT Camilla!)

Plastictreees · 14/09/2025 09:27

Dee51121 · 14/09/2025 09:05

From your list my favourites are Helena (with correct pronunciation), Catherine and Penelope.

@Plastictreees Hel-ee-nuh tends to be how it's pronounced in Ireland. Who deems what the correct pronunciation of a name is, you?

Not keen at all on Maud, Dorothy, Tamara, or Octavia.

Love Daphne, Helena, Vera, Beatrix, Margaret, and Catherine (but I'd spell it with a K).

Meh about Celine, Clara, Tabitha, and Penelope.

allshook · 14/09/2025 03:07

I love Clara & Maud/Maude from your list. Maudie is so sweet for a little girl. I’m going to throw in Theodora for you, nn Teddie. I think it combines the styles and sounds you like and it may edge some of your other choices potentially.
