Nick is my favourite boys name (short for Nicholas) but wanted to know other people’s opinions! Also may use Nicky as a nickname when younger.

It’s fine - but please bear in mind what your surname is. I genuinely knew of a Nicholas Hawes whose parents didn’t realise their mistake until it was too late.

It’s easily done. I once met a Leigh King.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 09/09/2025 11:42

I like it, better than all the cutesy names currently in vogue.

I like it, and Nicky for a baby/small child is really nice.
I was at school with a couple of Nicks and my ex brother in law was one. Never heard he Knickerless joke at all.
Definitely Nicholas on birth certificate though. Nico is also a very nice nn.

Ah yes I hadn’t even thought of Nico!

Bernard, Simon & Nick are definitely not popular names among teens in the UK.

I do live in a part of the UK which is more 'alternative' shall we say. 😅

I know a teenage Nick, Steve, Simon and Bernard! Perhaps these names are still popular.

There are still too many adult Nicks (& Steves, Mikes etc) around. Give it another 20 -30 years before it sounds ‘fresh’ again!

I don’t get it?!

Nicholas Hawes sounds like Knickerless Whores

similarly

Nicholas Cook sounds like Knickerless Cook
Nicholas Baker sounds like Knickerless Baker and so on.

Ketzele · 09/09/2025 00:11

Bring back Nick! I have an uncle Nick who I always thought very glamorous as a child. He had many girlfriends, a deep chocolate brown voice, and he drove an articulated lorry. Go for it, OP!

I don’t get it?!

“Nick Hawes” said quickly sounds like knickers I guess?

The “knickerless” thing is the only problem with Nicholas but I still really like it - it’s a lovely classic name that’s sadly underused now.

Personally my preferred nicknames for Nicholas would be Nico or Cole these days (or maybe even the European Claus) but only as I associate “Nick” with a lot of older blokes now (just like “Dave”, “Steve” ,”Mike” etc). But maybe it would be a refreshing change to meet a young Nick now as well- I suppose if similar sounding Jack and Zack are popular then why not Nick too?

Crispynoodle · 08/09/2025 23:46

I know a 54 year old man and he’s still a Nicky!

Mancity08 · 08/09/2025 23:39

I chose Nicholas, my son is 36 this year. Everyone calls him Nick
I gave never called him Nicky(doesn’t stick with me as I gave niece called Nicola who is Nicky)

NightPuffins · 08/09/2025 23:29

Nicholas is also one of my favourite names too! It’s classic, timeless. Nicky cute when young, Nick when older.

I think Nicholas is lovely. I know a 2 year old Nicky and he’s adorable.

Nicholas Hawes / Knickerless Whores

Ah thanks! I think I missed it because of accent differences!

Moveoverdarlin · 08/09/2025 23:00

I think it’s so so dated.

Every boy Nick I know is 50 plus.

To me it would be like calling a baby Steve, Dave, Martin, Paul. Nothing wrong with those names as such, but just of their time. It’s not a classic like James, William, Harry, George.

AmyDuPlantier · 08/09/2025 22:56

I love it

Bluelilacbella · 08/09/2025 22:55

Nicky is so feminine - short for Nicole, Nicola erc

Nick is ok but I know lots of 50 plus year olds
