Andromeda

I've loved Andromeda for a girl for a really long time but disregarded it for coming off pretentious. However, I'm growing to think it's actually useable and not that different to many names that are becoming more widely used, or is this just because it's been running through my head for a decade I'm now desensitised?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Not Harry Potter though?

I’ve never read Harry Potter. No need to get personal. Thanks.

DameSylvieKrin · 01/09/2025 08:38

I don’t think there’s any need to restrict the names of your children to avoid the gaps in other people’s knowledge. Greek myths are hardly niche.

I read plenty of books thank you. I still don’t think she should use it as a name for a lovely baby girl. Spelling things out every single time and explaining how to pronounce names is draining.

So the OP expects everyone to know that / google it to understand that / know how to pronounce it properly / spell it ? Still a no from me.

God forbid someone does something slightly different! And anyway, A LOT of people will have heard the name Andromeda either through classics or pop culture reference. You do you OP it’s a great name. Who cares if other people don’t like it?

But how else would you pronounce it? Or spell it?

It's names like Yse that are difficult in that regard.

I think rather that the OP expects everyone to be educated on MN. Apparently not everyone is.

Double posted.

Enko · 01/09/2025 08:28

I really like it and always have. Hector was on my boys name list too.

Does it matter if its pretentious? Thats other peoples judgement you know who you are abd why you chose it. Ive often been told my children have posh names. I dont think they so but even if they do so what? They have names dh and I carefully chose as we loved them.

I'm sorry but no one who read lots of books would make a snide comment like you did about the OP making up the name. It makes you look both mean and uneducated.

It sounds very heavy to me, like it would suit a large battleship.

Yes, I agree with this. Clunky.

It sounds like Androgynous to me.

Oh it does!

🐪An androgenous dromedary!

ETA mythological names are quite popular atm op, so it's fine from that perspective, but I don/t actually think its a pretty-sounding name. Names like Persephone are much "lighter."

She hasn't made it up. Hmm The amount of ignorance people show on this board is sometimes mind-blowing. Maybe expand your mind a bit and go read a book?

I know an Andrina if you are looking for alternatives that can be shortened to Andi.
I love a lot of Greek names but am not a fan of the ‘drom’ syllable in this one.

🐫🐫🐫
I know a female Andy, and I don't like the nn.
Her full name is much nicer.

PanderBare · 01/09/2025 08:03

Do you think Andromedary or is it just me? Smile

NewLifter · 01/09/2025 08:01

I really don't like it but then I don't like most of the names mentioned here, such as persephone. Awful!

ravenclaworslytherin · 01/09/2025 07:50

I really like it. It's no more pretentious than Persephone, Athena, Artemis etc I love Andie for a girl!

Newname42 · 01/09/2025 07:46

Nothing wrong with a Greek or long-ish name, but Andromeda makes me think of Android / sci-fi / Star Trek.
