Andromeda

I've loved Andromeda for a girl for a really long time but disregarded it for coming off pretentious. However, I'm growing to think it's actually useable and not that different to many names that are becoming more widely used, or is this just because it's been running through my head for a decade I'm now desensitised?

I love Andromeda and feel it’s similar to other 4 syllable names like Alexandra or Anastasia. I don’t understand what’s pretentious about it?!

This. It's fine and if you like it use it.

It sounds very heavy to me, like it would suit a large battleship.

This comment sticks out to me as I thought much the same, HMS Andromeda.
Of all the names out there don't lumber her with this one.

I have an unusual name. I always wondered why some people get angry and a bit upset at me about it. This post really explains the feelings they must be having about the expectations on them and their own missing knowledge. It’s helped me not take it personally. Fwiw I dont think anyone is ‘expected’ to know the origins of any name or how to spell them, I don’t think when someone reasonable picks a name you don’t know it’s in any way connected to expectations of you, just the hope that people will be polite and make an effort to say it correctly, in the same way you may make an effort to remember that Sallie likes an ie not a y or Samantha prefers to go by Sam.

I think it’s a fairly phonetic name, and andromeda is as known a name to me as Persephone or Pandora or Icarus, and many people who don’t know it will be familiar with hearing names they don’t recognise or that aren’t from their culture, whilst others may feel more like the op I quoted or the many others who are shocked, angry or convinced it’s ‘made up’ (where do you suppose all names started?). I suppose it depends on the groups of people dd is likely to be around.

Actually Icarus is a great name. Bit of a sad story but then all those myths are rather lurid plot-wise.

So the OP expects everyone to know that / google it to understand that / know how to pronounce it properly / spell it ? Still a no from me.

My first thought- androgynous in the media…

RobertaFirmino · 02/09/2025 00:04

It's a fabulous name but it makes me imagine some sort of Futurama-style sexy lady robot. Marvellous name though!

Mistyglade · 01/09/2025 10:13

Sounds like a computer brand.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/09/2025 09:38

I like Andromeda! Classical, as you say, it's not a made up name, it has plenty of abbreviations you can use. The only drawback is that it's quite long. I don't think it's pretentious at all - there's plenty more in the baby name thread that are FAR more pretentious than Andromeda!

LBOCS2 · 01/09/2025 09:34

I like it. It’s a strong name with classic roots and good diminutives if people think it’s too long to say all the time (Andi and Romy are great, non twee nicknames).

BeyondMyWits · 01/09/2025 09:26

I use Andromeda as my gamer name on the PlayStation games I play. (Lots of gamers use stars and constellations)

Mine is a ripped and busty warrior. Hence I would never personally use it for my kids 😆

PanderBare · 01/09/2025 09:18

@MellowPinkDeer You posted your opinion 4 pages in. Many people will be familiar with the name from Greek mythology, books, films, tv, astronomy etc.
It would have only taken you moments to check if it was an existing name.

I got annoyed when people were personally rude , not when they pointed out it wasn’t made up. I’m glad you have all the time in the world to double check before commenting. This wouldn’t happen in real life so is of no help to the OP.

You seem to be ignoring that were rude too though.

Also you make it sound like its a arduous task it takes seconds to Google a name on a phone it's not like you have to visit a library or wait until you go home to check it out. Or you could just ask the parents to tell you more about it before making up ridiculous judgements.

MellowPinkDeer · 01/09/2025 09:14

Spies · 01/09/2025 09:11

Yes she wants opinions but you didn't give an opinion you said she'd made it up and then got annoyed when others pointed out it wasn't a made up name.

If you've never actually heard of a name then it does indeed come across as uneducated to post saying it's made up.

There's plenty of names I've come across that I've never heard before in my job I wouldn't be so rude as to make a judgement and say they were made up just because I had never heard of it before. I would instead Google or ask the person about the origin of the name.

Surely the point of the OP asking is to get first thoughts? I can’t imagine anyone looks stuff up first? Everyone in OPs real life is not going to look it up before making a judgement?

ClaredeBear · 01/09/2025 09:08

You’ll have to accept it’s a bit Marmite but I love it and it has as many syllables as Victoria or Elizabeth, so no drama.

MellowPinkDeer · 01/09/2025 09:06

Spies · 01/09/2025 09:02

So why come on a thread and say it's made up. It's ok to not have heard of every name but if you've never heard the name why not stop and pause and check before coming on and being rude to the OP?

I’m being defensive when people are calling me uneducated which is not anywhere near the truth. I guess my bag just isn’t Greek mythology and that’s ok. Didn’t need a pile on and personal attacks. It did sound made up to me and I do think there are much nicer names for girls out there.

@MellowPinkDeer , you are being defensive because you've been called out on your comment.

I don't mind unusual but I think it has a bulky heavy sound to it.

SummaLuvin · 01/09/2025 08:46

wow, so this got a bunch of traction this morning

no - I wouldn't expect anyone to google a name or automatically understand how to pronounce something they haven't heard before. I would, however, expect people to respect names they are unfamiliar with and not openly mock them or assume they are made up just because they hadn't come across them. I actually think Andromeda is fairly easy to pronounce, and is spelled pretty much phonetically.

sorry, off the point, but whereabouts in the country is Andrew pronounced an-DREW? I know Drew’s a not uncommon nickname for Scottish Andrews, but I’ve never heard Andrew pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable.

In Mary Poppins!
"Miss Lark likes to walk in the park with AnDREW."

Carouselfish · 01/09/2025 08:42

I was thinking of using Alexandra to go e nn Andi
