Opinions on the name Ruben for a boy.
We also like Rowan and Harris

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
soontobeamama · 23/08/2025 13:17

Harris is my favourite, but I would saw Rowan is used more for a girl.

ChopsyHatesFungus · 23/08/2025 12:52

The only Reuben I know is a complete thug who goes hare coursing. 😡

Louoby · 23/08/2025 12:50

I love Reuben and Rowan

Reuben is as Jewish a forename as Cohen is a surname. Is this your heritage, @op? Would this matter to you?

It’s as Christian as it is Jewish (the Old Testament being part of the bible) and is currently incredibly popular with all sorts of people so it no longer has strong religious connotations, anymore than Jacob or Isaac do.

CoastalCalm · 23/08/2025 12:44

Another that associates it with sandwiches

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 23/08/2025 12:42

I like it but there are a lot of them, along with similar names like Roman and Rowan

If you do use I’d spell it Reuben or it will be endlessly misspelt which will be annoying for him

I consider your comment to be antisemitic and I have reported it to the moderators for consideration.

Did you report the comment further upthread, which suggested Haris is a name from an Islamic tradition?

Good for you. Perhaps while you are here, you could explain what’s ‘antisemitic’ about it, because you still haven’t explained and I would like to know.

granthamgrizzler · 23/08/2025 12:01

Please explain why you think my comment was ‘distasteful at best or offensive at worse’, as you did not give a reason for saying this.

I know of at least 3 Reubens none of whom have any Jewish heritage. One even an Evangelical Christian.I think your comment implies a negative about the name being in the Old Testament of the Bible. Your comment is distasteful at best and offensive at worst.

@Coconutter24 , the ben and bin bits sound differently (unless you have something like a NZ accent).

Rubén has the stress on the last syllable, so the location is irrelevant.

You can spell a name however you like but people will form an opinion based on the spelling.

They don’t sound any different the Ben and bin part when I’ve heard people pronounce them in real like, so I’ve just listened to the pronunciation online and they are the same.

‘You can spell a name however you like but people will form an opinion based on the spelling.’

Im sure I’ve said a name can be spelt however anyone wants it to meaning there’s no incorrect way which you’ve just confirmed! People forming an opinion on a name spelling doesn’t make it incorrect

BoleynMemories13 · 23/08/2025 11:35

I like them all pretty equally. None of them are personal favourites of mine, but I don't dislike any of them. At a push, I probably prefer Rowan.

Spelling Reuben this way will make life easier for him, unless you have a particular reason for choosing the Ruben spelling.

I prefer Harry to Harris, but much prefer Harris to Harrison.

Coconutter24 · 23/08/2025 11:32

Emanwenym · 23/08/2025 11:05

I'd avoid the Roob'n spelling but @Coconutter24 might like it.

I haven’t said I like or dislike the spellings of any names 🤷‍♀️ I just gave an opinion the fact I don’t believe names can be spelt wrong so I’m not sure why you need to make a targeted comment like that. Like you said, what I thought was my opinion and you had yours yet you go act like that and try make fun of mine

Coconutter24 · 23/08/2025 11:27

Toomanywaterbottles · 23/08/2025 11:02

That’s just nonsense, I’m afraid. You might choose to spell table as tehbul, but it wouldn’t be correct.

No you couldn’t spell a table any way you like because it is an object, you identify the object by the name it’s given so in your example a table is a table. A name is a social identifier and personal to each person so they can spell it however they like

Coconutter24 · 23/08/2025 11:18

Emanwenym · 23/08/2025 10:07

@Coconutter24 , You can spell Ruben how you like You could but why would you spell it some unique way?
Ruben Reuben - Reuben or Ruben are the usual ones.
Rubin is pronounced slightly differently
Rubén and Rouban would be pronounced differently. The diacritic would usually be omitted in the UK
Its a name there’s no correct or incorrect way. - that's your opinion. Others would disagree.

You could but why would you spell it some unique way?
You could say that about any name yet people do sometimes use a unique spelling…. Doesn’t make it incorrect
Reuben or Ruben are the usual ones.
I know a Rouban, might not be ‘the usual ones’ but it’s still correct
Rubin is pronounced slightly differently
It’s not
Rubén and Rouban would be pronounced differently
Yes because people who use Rubén tend to be in a different location

Moreteaandchocolate · 23/08/2025 11:10

I like Reuben - I’d spell it this way as it’s the most commonly used spelling so reduces confusion.

Rowan and Harris are good names too.

Emanwenym · 23/08/2025 11:05

I'd avoid the Roob'n spelling but @Coconutter24 might like it.

Emanwenym · 23/08/2025 11:04

Babies called Reuben in England & Wales since 1996

Babies called Rubin in England & Wales since 1996
No records found for babies called Rouban in England & Wales since 1996

Rowan is nice and inoffensive, but blends into all the Romans and Rorys.
Rohan is Ro-han. I'd think outdoor clothes or Indian heritage but that might be me.
Harris - not keen as it's too surnamey, but that's also how i feel about Lewis.
Haris is an Islamic or Urdu name.

Sandwich is what I think.

Me too. Yum.

Toomanywaterbottles · 23/08/2025 11:02

Coconutter24 · 23/08/2025 09:50

A name can be spelt however you want, it’s personal choice. So the correct way is however you choose to spell it. Obviously depending on the location the pronunciation maybe different but you can still spell a name how you want

That’s just nonsense, I’m afraid. You might choose to spell table as tehbul, but it wouldn’t be correct.

Topseyt123 · 23/08/2025 10:49

I would spell it Reuben, and I quite like it.

Harris? Not sure, but I would love it if it were Harry.

I've never been a particularly fan of Rowan, though it doesn't offend me.

Bellevue85 · 23/08/2025 10:43

I really like all three, but my favourite is Harris as a lot less common (Rueben / Rowen are very ‘on trend’ right now, IMO).
