george - love Georgie for girl, but don't like George for boy
archie - know one. Don't think dh likes
herbert - herbie/herb? - my grandad = selfish pig
hugo - I LOVE hugo!!! - I love it too, but have to avoid names with emphasis on 'O' sound. (You'll soon work out our surname!)
hugh - grant
jonathon - nn jonty? - me yes. dh no
jordie - you're avin a larffff

LyraSilvertongue · 05/06/2008 22:55

Duncan, despite being the name of my first boyfriend, is a terrible name.

LyraSilvertongue · 05/06/2008 22:54

I like Caleb and Sonny. Also Cameron. S's and Cs.

ButterflyMcQueen · 05/06/2008 22:53

Duncan has class

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/06/2008 22:52

Caleb - isn't that forrin
Saul - begins with S and ergo sounds odd with surname
Sonny - S
Rowan - Prefer for a girl
Will - have about 6 in family/close friends already
Rufus - dog
Joshua - too common
Jacob - love but one in family already
Jonah - as good as rhymes with surname!
Noah - already slagged it as too common on one thread tonight!
Jack - old man
Curtis - I like. Dh just frowned and said no, and referred me to Steigers .

Am not pointing out that Dylan and Duncan are foreign, or the list will be empty .

dizzydixies · 05/06/2008 22:48

Dylan - welsh
Duncan - scottish AND a surname

all of my others [meep]

Jacob
Jonah
Noah
Jack

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 05/06/2008 22:38

Ah, see your reason for not choosing Duncan!

Dh's 2 key criteria for name selection

  • not foreign. No welsh, Scottish, Irish names allowed, which prob rules out your entire list!
  • not a surname used as a first name.
dizzydixies · 05/06/2008 22:32

my friend's dh is a Dominic and he is a great bloke, if hyper

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 05/06/2008 22:31

tis our surname so am a bit bored with it - not meaning to offend it as a first name choice

what about

Darragh - irish lovely name pn Dara
Tadgh - also irish pn Tag
Donnell
Dougal
Dermott - knew one at uni and he was DREAMY!!

Elliot I think is a lovely name and cracking as a first choice

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 05/06/2008 22:29

The D thing is just coincidence, but am liking that it gives me the extra nickname Des (surname begins with S)!

Elliot can be in first or second place, but must be there somewhere.

Duncs is nicer nn than Dom IMO, and the only one I've ever known is lovely. It also has that lovely uncommon feel that appeals.

dizzydixies · 05/06/2008 22:21

not Duncan please not Duncan

do you have a 'D' thing going on?

I love Dylan btw - I would use it for a girl though

is it absolutely decided that Elliot is to be middle name and not used as the first?

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 05/06/2008 22:18

Have you come up with anything better than Dominic Elliot for me yet btw, with all these fancy names books that you now own?!

My fave is Zachary Elliot, but dh won't allow.

I was looking at biblical names earlier, and did suggest Ebeneezer, but it didn't go down too well .

Dh is just so hard to please!

Other contenders are Duncan Elliot and poss Dylan Elliot.

dizzydixies · 05/06/2008 21:51
