Baby boy name dilemma

Babyboynames · 20/08/2025 11:51

I’m expecting a baby boy in a couple of weeks. My husband and I cannot agree on a name!

I prefer Lucas and my husband prefers Finlay. What do you think about either name? And if you’ve been in a similar position what have you done to make a decision?

I prefer Lucas and think it sounds better with the middle name and initials.

Since you're the one doing all the hard work you should get the casting vote, particularly if he also has your husband's surname.

Does Theodore have to be the middle name? Could you call him Lucas Finlay or Finlay Lucas? I love both names!

I suppose that’s an option! Theodore is a version of my dad’s name though so I’d like to keep it. However, if we really can’t agree this might be a solution!

Thank you everyone for all your input and additional names! Definitely lots to discuss, but I’m still hoping that we will see baby and agree on the name!

I think they are really different names- they give a different vibe to me
Finley - surfer dude
Lucas - studious
I think that’s because I associate the names with my ds’s school friends!!
Anyway, both nice names but if you can’t agree then go back to the drawing board.
Some suggestions….(appreciate you didn’t ask for them….)
Isaac
Jude
Oscar
Matthew
Ben
Joseph
Elliot

I prefer Lucas but like Theodore even more.

Firsttimebabymummy · 20/08/2025 19:05

Really like both names.

Finlay will have spelling issues and as there's multiple in each room at my nursery, I'd say a lot more common so for that reason I vote Lucas!

Jackiepumpkinhead · 20/08/2025 18:34

Not overly keen on Finley or Finn, reminds me of the scruffy bloke from Hollyoaks in the 90’s. I do like Lucas, Luke and Luca though.

Pancakeflipper · 20/08/2025 17:31

Wait until you see him.

We had a firm name picked for our oldest DS. Took one look at him when he was born - he wasnt a *NameWePicked and totally changed the name. Don't regret it.

RuthW · 20/08/2025 17:28

Not keen on either as not my taste but both ok but think Lucas gets my vote

That’s amazing! They must be along similar lines! I also really like both names, so we might end up flipping a coin as well!

Both parents happy lol

Craftysue · 20/08/2025 15:32

We had a similar dilemma with our son - 2 names we both liked and struggled to decide. When he was born he just suited one of the names - I would wait until you meet him and decide
Good luck!

This is exactly why my husband prefers Finlay! And we would most likely be using Finn on a day to day basis.

We both like both names, so it is just a preference and at the moment we are planning to just wait and see what suits baby. I’m just worried we would still stick with our own favourite haha but no harm done as I think they both are lovely names!

Is Finn not an option? It's perfectly acceptable as a name in it's own right. I actually prefer it to Finlay. Finlay is lovely on a little bit but Finn suits all ages.

Both perfectly good names. Can you wait until baby is born to see what suits him?

I know you didn’t ask for suggestions, but similar names include:
Callum
Lewis
Daniel
Caleb
Ellis
Elliott
Liam
Reuben
Ryan

Many names in this list that are on our big shortlist! You’ve caught onto something! :-)

I like both. I prefer Lucas as a stand alone name, but love Fin(n) as a short form of Finlay.

I prefer the Finlay spelling. It's a shame Finley has now overtaken it as the 'usual' spelling as this never use to be the case.

Can you both live with each other's choice? You just say you both 'prefer' your choice, so I assume that means you also quite like the other one's favourite to be considering them both? If either of you really wasn't keen on one, that would make the other name the obvious choice. If you do genuinely like them both but just slightly prefer a different one to each other, I'd wait until he's born and see which one feels more right for him.

Agree with your DH on the spelling, can't stand the name Lucas so my vote goes for Finlay.

Emanwenym · 20/08/2025 15:03

Finley Feodore
Fin Guy
Fin Gates
Fin George

Lucas - Look as. e,g, Look as Gordon passes the ball

mnbvqwertyqwerty · 20/08/2025 14:51

A lot of people pronounce "th" as "f" these days i.e. Finn is how they say "thin". So I wouldn't pair it with a surname that's a noun - say Finn Gardener or Finn Graves.

user1492757084 · 20/08/2025 14:28

Both are nice names.
Finlay Theodore G sounds better to me.

Do you like Flynn Theodore G?

My own personal preference is for Lucas as it feels a bit more classic - Finley/Finlay is part of the Surname trend as well as having spelling issues.

BUT I think if neither of you can agree then it might be back to the drawing board to find a name you both like (even if it’s neither of your favourites).
