Girl name for someone who doesn't like girly names but don't want butch!

Be gentle I am fussy. ANd devoid of ideas.

I have got 2 lovely boys names sorted, but cannot think of a girl's name. Well, there is 1 that I like - Mary - but dh has vetoed at 'too religious'.

I'd like a name that cannot easliy be shortened, or at least isn't automatically.

I'd like something that isn't 'trying too hard', or too trendy, or too girly so that it sounds sweet on a little girl but stupid on a growth woman.

Please God, let it be a boy So much easier.

Ideally 2 or max 3 syllables. Surname begines with 'K' so not sure about alliteration. Dh suggested Christina - but a. unsure of alliteration, and b. absolutely hate the nn Tina (no offense to anyone please)

My bf is called Adele and she's Catholic, pretty sure that it counts as a good Christian name! also, have never known anyone to shorten it. I'd use it myself as I've always liked the name, but don't want to name baby after anyone in particular so no-one else gets offended! I looked up German girls names for you on a website and Adele was there too, so shouldn't be a problem for language?

ErnestTheBavarian · 30/05/2008 13:07

Very impressed at saintly connection. Was hoping you'd say Adrienne would be fine

Still now have short list of 2, so thanks guys.

Jusrt need dh to come home and turn his nose up at them

oooh oooh...I have a distant (dead) cousin called Edel Quinn who is a Venerable. Will that do? .
Adele is just a different spelling isn't it?
And according to this website www.catholic.org/saints/ there's already a Saint Adele.

Agree that Aidan and Adrienne don't go well together.

Without knowing your surname it's difficult to say about Christa but I agree it could scupper it. Although because Christa is not a cutey-pie name there's a better chance of it being ok, imo.

ErnestTheBavarian · 30/05/2008 12:34

I love Adrienne, would def go for it, but very similar to ds3's name, unfortunately

Like Theresa, but don't like any of the shortenings.
Like Patricia, but don't like any of the shortenings.
Like Adele, but doesn't feel like a proper Christian name. If it ain't a saint's name my family would have a fit. So a saint's name, but not too religious, for dh

Can't have anything too modern, fanciful or vagualy 'made up'

Like Christa, but unsure if it sounds stupid with 2 syllable 'K' surname? Whatdya think?

I ideally don't want it to be shortened at all, but if it is, at least something nice, hense Patricia, like, Trish, yuk enough to put me off the original name.

I guess, if someone can give saintly credentials to Adele, I'm looking at Adele, or Christa, if I can be convinced it doesn't sound stupid with surname, or Patricia, if reassurance that it won't nec. be shortened to Trish(a).

Shame about Adrienne. Would be perfect.

OK; I'll be brave and come out of the closet - ds3 is called Aidan. Aidan is too similar to Adrienne, isn't it? Boo hoo.

Hi Ernest . I wondered if this would be your thread!

I love Clara but DH doesn't. It sounds nice in German, too.

Rachel
Hannah
Anna
A German variation of Christina eg Christa.

Our baby name book has a list entitled "if you like Charlotte, you might love...":
Arabella
Caroline
Celia
Clementine
Colette
Georgina
Jane
Juliet
Lucy
Madeline
M argaret
Nora
Rose
Sophia
Susannah

...although I suspect some of those will be too girly for you.

LauraT · 30/05/2008 10:34

[waves at Ernest, thinks she is brave for posting in babyname thread!]

would Carlotta work better than Charlotte?
Clara
Adele
Emma
Greta
Carla

NL I would say you can definately shorten Miranda by the way (Randy/Anna/Andy???)

Heyyoo · 30/05/2008 09:36

Lucy?

ErnestTheBavarian · 30/05/2008 09:31

nl, nearly, lol. Sorry, don't like names ending in -ee. We have 3 boys, and this is dc no. 4, gender unknown. Fingers crossed, as all sorted, in every dept for boy. inc name. sigh.

Th names also don't work in Germany, so Ruth or Judith sound horrid. (Root! bleurgh)

I like beth, but not Elizabeth, but the th don't work.
