Girl name for someone who doesn't like girly names but don't want butch!

Be gentle I am fussy. ANd devoid of ideas.

I have got 2 lovely boys names sorted, but cannot think of a girl's name. Well, there is 1 that I like - Mary - but dh has vetoed at 'too religious'.

I'd like a name that cannot easliy be shortened, or at least isn't automatically.

I'd like something that isn't 'trying too hard', or too trendy, or too girly so that it sounds sweet on a little girl but stupid on a growth woman.

Please God, let it be a boy So much easier.

Ideally 2 or max 3 syllables. Surname begines with 'K' so not sure about alliteration. Dh suggested Christina - but a. unsure of alliteration, and b. absolutely hate the nn Tina (no offense to anyone please)

I think you should tell your dh - straight-faced, mind - that you've decided on Cunegund Fanny. You may have to insist you're serious for a day or two, but I bet you he'll have agreed to Mary before the end of the weekend!

GreenElizabeth · 30/05/2008 16:12

Lois is a good one. NOt too girly, but not butch.

How does that work in Germany?

/Martha or Alexia.

belgo · 30/05/2008 15:40

I love Martha. Works well in Germany as well I think? At least Martha is well known in Belgium, pronounced Marta.

Unfortunately dh doesn't like it, so I can't have it for dc3.

ErnestTheBavarian · 30/05/2008 15:37

I think Cunegund Fanny as a certain ring to it.

Thanks guys

Had same issues with girl's names as wanted strong names that weren't too "pretty":
Catherine,
Mary,
Frances,
Anna
Martha
Adelaide
Constance

All timeless and neither fashionable nor unfashionable so your DD can make of her life what she wants!

MKG · 30/05/2008 15:26

Or my personal favorite M name of Marta.

Scotia · 30/05/2008 15:26

tutot = tutor

Scotia · 30/05/2008 15:24

I had a German tutot called Marita, which I thought was quite nice, and is close to the names you like. Any good?

pinkem · 30/05/2008 15:24

Emma?
Roberta?
Claudia?

MKG · 30/05/2008 15:22

Michelle

Am biased but an M work great with a K

LauraT · 30/05/2008 15:14

definitely go with cunegund. now that's a head turner of a name!

finknottle · 30/05/2008 15:08

Siblings at d's swimming course here:

Basil
Fanny
Linus

Yes, they're German and I was sniggering enough at the first two, then she brought the baby along today.

Sorry, not helping, am I?

saints' names for girls

Upsidedowncake · 30/05/2008 15:00

Hello

My big book of saints has:

cecilia
ursula
anne
beatrice (though can be shortened)

as well as:
crispina
cunegund
apollonia

xx

Ellbell · 30/05/2008 14:23

Don't think there's a St Ellen, but Ellen is just a variant of Helen(a) (or Elena) and there are any number of saints with that name.

PS Don't google for 'Saint Ellen'. It seems there is a porn star called Ellen Saint

Alternatively, what about Agnes?

Ellbell · 30/05/2008 14:18

Has anyone mentioned Ellen yet? Ellen is pronounceable in all languages and pretty but not at all girlie.

Chocolateteapot · 30/05/2008 14:13

My Mum is German and known as Christa (her middle name). Obviously works well in Germany and has been fine here.

Her sister was Marianne (pronounced Marianna), I have cousins with children called Mara and Katya. My grandmother was Maria, known as Mia.

With Adele, how would it be pronounced over there, would the "e" be turned into an "a" sound ?

ErnestTheBavarian · 30/05/2008 14:05

dh vetoed Mary, but agreed to Maria.

Then a couple of days later he banned Maria too. I think it took him a couple of days to realise that Maria was the German Mary, lol

Will pop over when I have time - am procratinating in sorting out the house, which is a tip, but baby due a week on Monday, so need to pull finger out big time
