It's new to me but I like it.

MickGeorge22 · 12/08/2025 22:27

I have a six year old relative called Nia. She's the only one I know though.

Moll2020 · 12/08/2025 22:25

My GD is Nia x

Emanwenym · 12/08/2025 21:56

Just don't use a filler Welsh 1960s/70s middle name. Smile
The most popular one back then was Wyn for both girls and boys.
Haf was popular as a middle name then too and would suit a girl born in the summer.

I agree with pp that -i names are popular now, and would add Nansi, Elsi and Lowri (Nancy, Elsi and Laura) to that list.

Mabli, Cadi, Mali and Lili are the equivalents of Mabel, Katie/Cathy, Molly and Lily.

Spidey66 · 12/08/2025 21:53

It’s sweet.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 12/08/2025 21:05

I like it, and the proudly Welsh Nia that I know is fabulous and we couldn't do without her!

user2848502016 · 12/08/2025 20:16

It is a bit dated, I live in North Wales and all the Nias I can think of are 40 plus.

The more I say it the more I like it though! It’s short and pretty. Go for it if you both like it

Liliwen · 12/08/2025 19:55

Im in north wales and my daughter is in a Welsh medium primary. There aren’t many Nia’s but there are a couple. It wouldn’t be considered dated where I am, just not as popular as it was 30/40 years ago. The current popular Welsh names seem to be mabli, Cadi, Mali and Lili round us (anything ending in i really). I like Nia. Simple and classy and I can’t imagine anyone randomly pronouncing it as nigh a when it’s pronounced to rhyme with tia, mia etc. I also know a Lia which is nice.

Emanwenym · 12/08/2025 19:49

She might get called Nina by mistake. That's nice too.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/08/2025 19:44

BCBird · 12/08/2025 16:56

Ambiguity in pronunciation: knee a or nigh a.
She will get fed up.of correcting people

Not if you pronounce it the same way as Ria, Mia, Sia, Tia and Pia

Emanwenym · 12/08/2025 19:43

@ThisTwinklyTaupeLurker , you love it, use it.
If your DH isn't from a Welsh-speaking area, it won't seem dated at all, and even if he is it is still a pretty name, so don't worry about that.

Llongyfarchiadau a chroeso cynnes i Nia fach!

(Congratulations and a warm welcome to little Nia!)

ThisTwinklyTaupeLurker · 12/08/2025 19:25

Thanks everyone.
DD has not long been born and I am so in my head about the name.
I loved Nia throughout the pregnancy because of the Welsh heritage, short and cute. Not one of the super popular names.

But now I've been worried that she will constantly face 'near' jokes and when we go back to Wales it's only associated with older generations.

So its been good to hear your thoughts!

I love it. Went to school with two Nias in the 90s, and now know a 7-year-old one.

So much nicer than the boringly ubiquitous nothing of à name that is Mia.

I like it a lot.
Expect some folk to mis-read it as the more common Mia though.

Emanwenym · 12/08/2025 18:52

It is tainted for me by the Mia/Thea/Gia type trend, but if OP wants a pretty and uncomplicated Welsh name, it's fine.
It was the 328th most registered girl's name in England & Wales last year. (Jointly with Amayah, Hawa and Nicole.)

Nia (given name) - Wikipedia - it's also a name in other cultures.

Whatisityoucantface · 12/08/2025 18:16

If I didn’t know the name was Welsh, I would think it another Mia/ Thea/ Tia type name which are everywhere atm. This put me off it personally. But it is a cute name!

Emanwenym · 12/08/2025 18:05

@Alexandrine , it probably depends where you lived in Wales.
It's not dated in bad way.
Famous ones:
Nia Griffith - Wikipedia
Nia Roberts (presenter) - Wikipedia
Nia Parry - Wicipedia
Nia Caron - Wikipedia (Anita in Pobol y Cwm)

poppymolly · 12/08/2025 18:02

@ThisTwinklyTaupeLurker
My friend named her daughter the same. Lovely!

MummyDummyNow · 12/08/2025 17:45

It’s a beautiful name, go for it.

Alexandrine · 12/08/2025 17:27

I don’t think it can be dated - the sound is too close to popular Mia for that. And it is similar to classic Nina too. But I must admit, despite living in Wales for several decades now I’ve only met one Nia and she was in her 30’s or 40’s.

Most of the young girls here at the moment seem to either have popular English names (Evie, Ava, Poppy, Amelia, Lily etc) or if Welsh ones they are things like Seren, Eira, Efa, Alys and Nansi (ie. either modern Welsh names or sometimes just Welsh spellings of “English” names).

I really do like Nia though, short, simple, pretty and easily works both sides of the border.

Judiezones · 12/08/2025 17:26

A very nice Welsh name, good choice

Moreteaandchocolate · 12/08/2025 17:25

I love the name Nia - go for it!

YSianiFlewog · 12/08/2025 17:14

Nia is a lovely name, I know quite a few including a couple of children. Not too popular and easy to pronounce.

NPET · 12/08/2025 17:13

Like it.
Hopefully a longer second name tho.

It’s like calling someone the word near. Fun when you teach a class full of girls called Mia, Nia and Tia!

Edited

That must be your accent. In mine Nia and near sound totally different.
