Baby name advice – Liliana?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some thoughts on a baby girl name I’ve completely fallen in love with, Liliana.

I’ve always adored Lily and Lilian, and when I came across Liliana it just sat so nicely with me. I think it’s so pretty and has a lovely, timeless feel. But I’m a bit unsure how it comes across to others, does it feel like two names pushed together (Lily + Anna)? Is it a bit of a mouthful?

I’m also smitten with the middle name Marigold, so the full name would be Liliana Marigold. To me it just feels romantic and elegant, but I’d love to hear your honest thoughts before I get too attached!

Thanks in advance!

Liliana is great. I like Marigolds, too, and I don’t think of gloves but then I’m showing my origins there so perhaps my opinion on that name doesn’t count.
I knew an old woman called Lilias, which is another variant

Love Liliana. Very versatile and pretty.

It’s very frilly, albeit pretty. I must admit I prefer simpler Lily/Lilia/Lilian. But a lot of those frillier names are getting more popular (Eliana, Arabella etc). And if she’s not an ultra girly girl when older and feels it doesn’t suit her, at least it’s easy to shorten - she can be Lil/Lily. So if it’s your fave name then I say go for it.

Liliana is lovely. Liliana Marigold is nice and very floral.
Other second names ..
Liliana Christobel
Liliana Marie
Liliana Lilac
Liliana Florence

I also like Luciana

Down this end of the world, Liliana would be “tell me you’re Italian without telling me you’re Italian”.

But it is pretty.

BebbanburgIsMine · 08/08/2025 22:24

Liliana is beautiful, not so keen on Marigold.

Why are some people insisting that she will be “Lily” though? Her parents can call her that if they wish of course, but only Liliana herself can decide which name she wants to be known as, when she’s able to make that choice, if it’s Liliana, then that’s her name, and no-one has any right to call her something different.

I’ve never tolerated my own name being shortened, I hate it, and when DD1 was born I insisted everyone call her by her full name. Now she’s an adult, she insists on her full name.

DD2 has a name that can’t be shortened.

The Liliana that I know is Romanian

Melanie Blatt's baby was called Lilyella - a mix of her favourite flower and Ella Fitzgerald. I've got a head full of useless crap!

So she was. Both beautiful names

foreverbasil · 08/08/2025 21:21

I know a few adult women with this name, all Eastern European and all shorten it to Lily. I spent some time working in Romania and it was extremely popular there. Lovely name.

Melanie Blatt from All Saints named her daughter this and I always thought it was such a pretty name

MirandaBlu · 08/08/2025 21:07

I like it a lot. I just think of it as the traditional form of Lillian in several languages (Czech, Slovak, Lithuanian, and Polish - and probably other Slavic languages I'm forgetting - as well as various Romance languages). I wouldn't even have thought of it being a compound of Lily + Anna. I do think the popularity of Lily might put me off if I wanted to avoid possibly too common names, but I've also seen Liana used as a short form.

42wallabywaysydney · 08/08/2025 19:55

Do you or your DH have Italian or Spanish heritage? I always associate it with Latin cultures so might be a bit odd if you’re both English but I do prefer it to Lily or Lilian. In any case it will definitely get shortened to Lili. I know a few Lilia and Lilianas (two Italian and one Colombian) and all get called Lili. Liliana Marigold absolutely not, too many flowers in one name.

RuthW · 08/08/2025 19:41

Lovely. I love ‘arna’ names.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 08/08/2025 18:41

Love it, and she can shorted it how she chooses when she's old enough.

caringcarer · 08/08/2025 17:17

I love it. My dog is called Liliana.

curlyLJ · 08/08/2025 17:13

It's nice, but will probably get shortened to Lily. How about Lilani? It's one of my friend's names and I've always loved it.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/08/2025 17:11

Was ony list along with Lilith but I had boys. It's gorgeous.

AntisocialMedium · 08/08/2025 17:09

There isn't an r, but the -ana sound is like the non-rhotic arna
'ɑnə not 'anə

zebrastripesarefun · 08/08/2025 17:00

Love the name Liliana I know one and it’s never shortened to Lily. There’s no r sound in the name either. Marigold is just beautiful for a middle name

AntisocialMedium · 08/08/2025 16:56

Liliana is too frilly for my taste too - the -ana detracts from the Lily part.
Lilian is a granny name IMO, and I don't like it.

Lily is a flower as is Marigold, so it seems a naff combination.

PrincessOfPreschool · 08/08/2025 16:56

I've only ever known it as an Hispanic name. It's still pretty though. I love Marigold (and would use as first name), but what if you have another DD one day? You'll have used up your favourite names!

carkerpartridge · 08/08/2025 16:16

It looks pretty but I think it's a bit of a mouthful, it doesn't really flow. It also makes me think Lily Allen!! I don't like Marigold at all.

Yellowcakestand · 08/08/2025 16:16

Pretty name. I also know a Lillia which I really like the sound of.
I dont like Lillian.

Silverbirchleaf · 08/08/2025 16:08

Love it, and also prefer it to Lillian.

Plastictreees · 08/08/2025 16:07

Too frilly for my taste, and she would likely be nicknamed ‘Lily’ which is ubiquitous.

Marigold = gloves.

To each their own!
