We think we are down to our contenders for our first baby due next month, we have kept the gender a surprise.

We both are huge country music fans and that's were some of the inspo on the boys names comes in - I know they won't be everyone's taste.

What are peoples honest opinions, I know the boys names especially aren't overly common in the UK but I think they are recognisable enough and easy to pronounce.

Boys

Rhett Oliver
Nash Jude
Atlas Terrence (Terrence is family name)

Girls

Aubrey Florence (nn Bre or Aub)
Ottilie Honey (nn Ottie or Otts)

Thanks :)

Or some people bring significant thought to the important and lasting issue of their child's name. The poster to whom you responded made a very good point.

Less usual names in my opinion are:

For a boy - Gawain, Merlin, Gulliver Magnus, Ambrose

For a girl - Daphne, Isolde, Hebe, Mirabel, Marnie

I totally appreciated her point and I wouldn't call my child something I felt had really bad connotations but just because someone was a villain in a movie etc that is just silly.

Also sorry who is using any of those boy's names Gulliver Magnus... seriously...

I have a friend with 2 sons. They both had unusual names. Not as unusual as the names you are proposing. They were both bullied mercilessly throughout their time at school. Their lives were miserable.
They are both now adults and have children of their own. Their children have very ordinary, popular names.

Or people just don't really deep it that much.

Aub is a terrible nickname

I have a nephew known as Aubie, it's worse than Aub.

WhereAreWeNow · 07/08/2025 10:02

Florence, Jude, and Oliver are all lovely names.

When in 1950?

Yes, and all of the years since.

I'm not adoring your names.
My faves, inspired by your list, are ..

Nash Terrence
Jude Oliver
Honor Florence
Ottilie Florence

Or people just don't really deep it that much.

That’s incredible to me.

Let us know what you decide in the end!

Roosch · 07/08/2025 09:51

Sorry was thinking Audrey Florence - nice name

Atlas is also a bad meaning - similar to naming a girl Pandora or Delilah. Why do people choose names for bad characters? Or do people not actually care what the name means?

If I can give my honest opinion (apologies in advance) these names are a bit trashy and try-hard.

Rhett - immediately think Rhett Butler (but said in Scarlett’s voice from GWTW).
Nash - think Nashville
Atlas - unless he is Greek and a body builder will sound ridiculous.

Aubrey Florence is nice.

Ottilie - trying hard to be posh
Honey - only for a prostitute or stripper

RavenPie · 07/08/2025 09:41

I wouldn’t call a girl (or a boy tbf) Aubrey

Rhett and Nash are not nice sounds but I would pick Rhett if I was forced to choose. I like Atlas but I don’t think it flows nicely with Terrence. Florence and Ottilie are lovely but Ottilie in particular is very popular. Honey is just too twee. Florence Ottilie is a perfectly lovely name. I would probably go with Terrence Jude from your boy options.

You even posted Audrey when you meant Aubrey!

I think Audrey is pretty!

Re your boy names - if you want to use a family name as a middle name do it regardless of the first name (unless you go for the first name Clarence).

MelonUsk · 07/08/2025 09:37

Aubrey is a boys name

Nash will be known as Gnasher. Gnash your teeth. Please don’t do this

Eenameenadeeka · 07/08/2025 09:36

I like Atlas and Aubrey. LOVE Florence.

yonem · 07/08/2025 09:35

Rhett makes me think of the syndrome. Aubrey is a boy’s name. I think of the artist Aubrey Beardsley.

Honestly I’d combine your middle name choices and go for Jude Oliver for a boy. Audrey Florence for a girl.

Aubrey is male.
Audrey is female.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 07/08/2025 09:30

Aubrey may well be a girl's name in the US but if you are in the UK, it's definitely a boy's name here.

My very stuffy geography teacher was called Aubrey, 35 years ago

Twentytwotwelve · 07/08/2025 09:29

Also just a little statistic here to help.

Aubrey is way more popular as a girls name than a boys name:

So I wouldn’t let that put you off.

I like Rhett, sorry not keen on the rest

AccidentalPrawnYouFool · 07/08/2025 09:26

Actually I like the middle names for your boys names, Oliver and Jude. Jude Oliver? Oliver Jude?

AccidentalPrawnYouFool · 07/08/2025 09:25

When I was pregnant I wanted to call my second child all sorts of wild names. Thankfully vetoed by DH and now she has a normal name that everyone can spell and when she’s a big hotshot lawyer wont be silly. I think hormones have a lot to answer for here I do get it but they have to have this name forever!
I do like Ottilie from your list but with Florence rather than Honey, to much EEE endings.
Aubrey could be mistaken for Audrey especially with autocorrect.
Sorry I don’t like any of your boys names but I really struggled with boys names. Thankfully had two girls!
