Winona/Willow Winter - Alliterative?

gotellsomeone · 26/07/2025 18:36

We are currently really drawn to alliterative names for dd3 with the surname Winter. (Other dc don’t have alliterative names)

options are:
Winona Winter
Willow Winter
Winnifred Winter
Wilhelmina Winter

If we go with Winona or Winifred it’s likely she will end up being Winnie Winter which I do still think is cute but others could think is too silly?

alternatives we like:
Violet Winter
Sylvia Winter
Magnolia Winter
Vivienne Winter

thoughts or suggestions?

My favourite is Sylvia or Sylvie Winter

Mamamia35 · 27/07/2025 16:21

Willow or Vivienne would be my choice.

Spidey66 · 27/07/2025 15:35

I like Willow but not keen on the others.

NightPuffins · 27/07/2025 15:24

Winter - what a great surname!

I love alliteration in names, but WiWi and WinWin are just too much for me.

Violet - just makes me think violent winter, a terrible snowstorm with subzero temperatures.

Sylvia Winter is wonderful!

intrepidpanda · 27/07/2025 14:47

Winnie Winter and Willie Winter sound a bit cartoonish
I would avoid Winifred and Wilhemina for this reason
The English ard terrible for shortening names so they will get shortened

I'm assuming the OP isn't of Lakota heritage.

There were 23 baby Winona’s in E and W in 2023, I very much doubt any of them are Lakota heritage either. People use names from different heritages than their own all the time - Winona Ryder and Wynonna Judd are famous enough that I don’t think most people only think of the Native American heritage of the name anymore. It’s become just an “American” name now like Lainey or Britney imo, so perfectly usable if you like that style.

Personally for me OP, I like the sound of Winona Winter or Sylvia Winter best of your options - I’d lean slightly towards Sylvia only because I dislike the possibility of Winnie. I’m not sure Willow flows as well with Winter for some reason and Violet Winter sounds too descriptive to me.

It's a real name. The placename in Minnesota is based on a Lakota word for oldest daughter, and while unusual, Winona Ryder is not the only bearer of the name.

I'm assuming the OP isn't of Lakota heritage.

Sylvia Winter is gorgeous. Sylvia is an underused name and is so beautiful.

Leaveswoods · 27/07/2025 13:39

Violet Winter is gorgeous!

we have Autumn Violet for our little girl x

KeepOnKeepingOn25 · 27/07/2025 13:16

I also hear ‘violent winter’ with Violet

Agree Sylvia Winter is a brilliant writers name! But quite old sounding.

Ideas for alternatives to W to go with your surname:

Briony
Isla
Aila
Rhoswen
Liora
Lillias / Lily
Celeste
Yvaine

Thankyou for the replies, I think we have it cut down to

Willow winter
Winona Winter
Sylvia Winter
Violet Winter

Willow Winter has a bit of a Willy Wonka sound maybe?

Winona Winter is nice but Winnie Winter is a bit too gimmicky sounding to me.

Sylvia Winter is nice (I like Sylvie Winter even more)

Violet Winter - love Violet but I do hear “violent winter” with the two noun names together.

Absentmindedsmile · 27/07/2025 12:45

Willow Winter is great

Sylvia Winter sounds like an aged (but tremendously successful) crime writer.

Wilhemina (I’ve probably spelt it wrong already), just no 🫣

KeepOnKeepingOn25 · 27/07/2025 12:41

Wroslyn (alternative spelling to Rosaline)

although is a silent W, so maybe not useful for alliteration

KeepOnKeepingOn25 · 27/07/2025 12:37

Aw do you not like the Celtic ones OP? They can sound so pretty, like folklore come to life!

muddyford · 27/07/2025 12:11

Love Magnolia Winter.

TerrierCollector · 27/07/2025 12:05

My dogs are called Willow and Winter but don’t let that put you off! Both lovely names.

gotellsomeone · 27/07/2025 11:58

Thankyou for the replies, I think we have it cut down to

Winnie Winter sounds witchy. Willow Winter is ok. I like Sylvia Winter best.

NarnianQueen · 27/07/2025 08:26

I think the second set of names, not beginning with W, are better. They all sound like fabulous names for a novelist!

DemBonesDemBones · 26/07/2025 18:54

Winona Winter is legendary, I love it so much!

Agree!

Eenameenadeeka · 27/07/2025 07:09

I vote for Vivienne, although she will always be last alphabetically with those initials.

user1492757084 · 27/07/2025 06:49

Winona Winter is perfect.

I love Winona Ryder in The Age of Innocence and Mermaids.

Other ideas..

Elula Winter
Wyuna Winter
Tess Winter
Ebony Winter

JillyGiraffe · 27/07/2025 04:24

Winona Winter doesn’t seem to flow very well to me and I’m not keen on Winnie Winter. Do you like the sound of these names?
Tommy Thompson
Ruby Rubicon
Elinor Ellison
If so, go for it! They just seem a bit of a mouthful compared to Vivienne Winter or Sylvia Winter.

GreyMaresTail · 27/07/2025 03:26

vivienne winter is gorgeous

VAmum · 27/07/2025 03:24

I think 'Winona Winter' is a lovely choice! It has such a cool, whimsical vibe to me. She could go by 'Winnie,' 'Nona,' or even 'Noni'—all super cute!
