Bobby as a girl’s name

What does everyone think of this? I love that it is the more masculine spelling, feels cool and edgy but also cute. But just need some positive reinforcement as most current online threads really slam it as a full name!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I love it, DH vetoed it but by chance she ended up with the nickname Bob due to the Bobinogs TV show. I know a child Bobbie and it suits her.

Stormroses · 19/07/2025 17:51

I think it's cute and cool and lovely but would always use it as a nn and give a real name of Robyn or Roberta or Robina on the birth certificate. (I love Robyn too - Robyn nn Bobby is very cool and cute.

Asparagusandpotatoes · 19/07/2025 17:48

Love Bobbie as a nickname for Roberta. 30s vibe, sparky and cute when younger, cool as a teen and really versatile as an adult. Unusual without being totally made up or overly frilly.

JDM625 · 19/07/2025 17:46

Bobby as her whole, legal name or a nickname? Either way, I personally hate typical 'boys' names on 'girls'. Its not edgy or cool!

Charley, Dylan, Frankie, Bobby on a girl- no! I can hear kids chanting Booby 😬

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/07/2025 17:40

You like the male spelling because male is a promotion and female is a demotion. If you wouldn’t call a boy Niki or Jean, don’t call a girl Bobby.

Comedycook · 19/07/2025 17:37

Downmarket

SpottyAardvark · 19/07/2025 17:36

Boy’s name, great.
Labrador’s name, even better.

Girl’s name? Absolutely not. It would sound like you were desperate for a son so you gave her a boy’s name because being ‘only a girl’ she was second best. Not good enough. In her position, how would that make you feel?

Nothinglikeagoodbook · 19/07/2025 17:34

Pinty · 19/07/2025 17:33

and it was a nickname her name was Roberta

Yes, I know. I quite like the nickname Bobbie. But not "Bobby" for a girl.

Pinty · 19/07/2025 17:33

Nothinglikeagoodbook · 19/07/2025 16:53

But that was spelled Bobbie.

and it was a nickname her name was Roberta

Pinty · 19/07/2025 17:31

I am confused about why people want male names for their daughters but wouldn't consider a female name for their sons why is that?
and sorry OP I am not keen on it

MysteriousUsername · 19/07/2025 17:29

The only Bobbies I know are short for Robyn or Roberta. I do like it, but I'd have to go with a full name. I think Robyn and Roberta are both lovely names.

Laiste · 19/07/2025 17:28

As a deliberate short for a suitable real name yes. Robyn ect.

Bobbie.

Berlinlover · 19/07/2025 17:28

I immediately thought of Bobby Simpson from late 80s and early 90s Home and Away.

SlenderRations · 19/07/2025 17:26

I don’t really like nicknames as names. Give her a real name and use Bobby as her nickname

FormalHerb · 19/07/2025 17:26

If her name was Robyn, her NN could be Bobby, repeating the ‘y’.

cocoonscriticupgrading · 19/07/2025 17:24

I don't dislike it but I know a few puppies called Bobby / Bobbi / Bobbie - if I heard you calling your toddler, I'd be looking around for something cute and furry on four legs. Sorry!

purpleme12 · 19/07/2025 17:21

But yes, Bobbie spelling

Ddakji · 19/07/2025 17:21

I think it’s nice and I think the spelling is also OK, given that she’d probably have to spell it anyway. The spelling doesn’t make it any less of a unisex name.

purpleme12 · 19/07/2025 17:20

I like it actually
I like it because I associate it with The Railway Children Bobby. I know that wasn't her real name.
But I guess not everyone will have that association

ClunkyPigeon · 19/07/2025 17:20

I think if you go for Robin / yn or Roberta, it’s a very sweet nickname. I’m not keen on it on its own. But love the Railway Children connection and nostalgia!

ginasevern · 19/07/2025 17:18

I know a 27 year old with Bobbie as a double barrelled name (think Bobbie-Joe). When I first heard it I thought it sounded overly American and a bit like a Country singer but it has grown on me. I'd definitely go with the "ie" ending.

Liliwen · 19/07/2025 17:08

I taught a Bobbie many years ago. She suited it

Pops1985 · 19/07/2025 17:07

I know two girls called Bobbie, I think it’s cute

outrageously · 19/07/2025 17:00

It reminds me of Bobbie Gentry and the Railway Children.

outrageously · 19/07/2025 16:55

I like it but perhaps spelt Bobbie. Similar vibes to Robyn which I also like.
