Bobby as a girl’s name

What does everyone think of this? I love that it is the more masculine spelling, feels cool and edgy but also cute. But just need some positive reinforcement as most current online threads really slam it as a full name!

It reminds me of ‘Don’t Care Bobby’ in Enid Blyton’s St Clare’s books.

Her was another Roberta though Bobby was her nickname

No, Bobby is an ugly, clunky name for any child.

Rowena
Robin
Rebecca
Ebony

Rowena? Rebecca and Ebony? And you’re calling Bobby an ugly name!

10Pontipines · 21/07/2025 16:12

My one year olds friend is Bobbie (Roberta) - named after the Railway Children character. I really like it - it suits her. I think her Mum wishes she’d made more of an effort to call her Roberta though instead of Bobbie. If you like it, go for it.

My first thought was Bobby Bruna in the Skandar series, and she’s a cool character

(edit to add- she’s a Roberta)

I knew there was a Bobby in a Blyton school series! A girl! Called Bobby! Heaven forfend 🤣.

Her name was Roberta shortened to Bobbi. She was Bobbie

@Ddakji ,it's a traditional diminutive of Robert.
Babies called Bobby in England & Wales since 1996

Famous Bobbys:
Robson, Moore, Charlton, Darin, Davro, Ball, Seagull...

Yes, I know. And a diminutive for Roberta.

I love it. It reminds me of the railway children too which I love.

Like the railway children! Will it be short for Roberta?

It's not closed minded to ask why people think it's ok to use a traditionally masculine name for a girl but not a traditionally feminine name for a boy.
I think it says something about a society that thinks it's cool to have a boy's name but not cool to have a girl's name. And not all traditionally female names are flowery .

It’s not a traditionally masculine name. It’s apparently (unknown to me) a traditionally masculine spelling.

If you can spell Vicky, Katy or Sammy with a Y for a girl,‘I’m not sure why you can’t spell Bobby like that.

Pinty · 20/07/2025 17:21

Ddakji · 20/07/2025 17:06

I think the close-minded bit refers to everyone saying you can’t sell it like that for a girl.

I never read The Railway Children so in my head, she’s always been Bobby. Never occurred to me there was a male and female saying spelling it!

The name isn’t Bathsheba the Lady of the Night. It’s Bobby, a quite dated, boring boy’s name.

Closed minded, my arse.

Was a bit of a short term fad in late 80's when Australia soap Home and Away started in UK so seems dated to me but I'll be a lot older than you.

Maxorias · 20/07/2025 00:59

There's plenty of names with diminutives that could go for either - but people automatically assume that anything not frilly or delicate MUST be a boy's name.

My child has a name that's a girl's name, but the diminutive sounds more masculine (imagine her name is Theodora and we call her Theo). Never been an issue so far. If and when people make assumptions we correct them and it's never mentioned again.

However, I wouldn't use a diminutive as a full name. I'd give her an actual name (Robin or Roberta as suggested above) and use Bobby interchangeably with the full name.

Susan Maughn .. the song " I want to be Bobby's girl"...so the Bobby in the song is male.. my first b/f age 15 was called Robert.. everyone called him Bobby.. this was our song . ( he joined the army age 17 and that was the end of us).

LucasBuck · 19/07/2025 23:40

No. Not as a given name. For a start, it will end up misspelt as Bobbi, Bobbie or even Booby. You also don’t know that your daughter will want to be “cool and edgy”. She might be an introvert who wants to fit in with her peers. Stick with Robyn (I personally prefer the look of Robin but accept the Robyn spelling is de facto for girls) and then she can have the choice to be “Bobby” or not.

Absolutely love it. Not a fan of ‘girly’ names though anyway!

Doubt future generations will know that film at nursery, school etc.

Maybe they'll know it as a book?

I doubt many of this generation know it as a book! I never read it either, just saw the film, and I’m ancient.
