I know it's not the most popular but is it unusable?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

  1. Could this person be taken seriously as a lawyer, Dr etc? Eg I'd never hire a lawyer called Poppy or Molly or Milly etc.

I don't agree that Poppy, Milly or Molly are problematic but I do agree with the point in general that certain names may have negative connotations that wrongly or not may hinder life opportunities or ease of access to opportunities, or how they are treated or perceived, and that parents should consider this. It's not fair or how it should be, but it's the reality

Saffron is elegant; Sapphire is a stripper name, sorry

That's so ridiculous. It's only going to be to your detriment if you judge how good someone is at their job by whatever weird personal connotations their name conjurs up for you, rather than real credentials!!

Thisshirtisonfire · 20/07/2025 23:43

I really loved it and it was on my list for both of my daughters however we went with something else in the end. I think it's so pretty.

TeenLifeMum · 20/07/2025 23:42

I like it but for us it does have naughty girl connotations - 2 sapphires in dd3’s class, one permanently excluded and the other spends lots of time in isolation. In our area it tends to be stereotypical council house and naughty. Names evolve and in a different area of the UK it’ll have a totally different vibe and as adults that tends to change again.

LasVegass · 20/07/2025 23:37

Ed Sheeran’s latest song is a bit annoying, but otherwise a pretty name.

AcrobaticCardigan · 20/07/2025 23:34

I absolutely love the name Sapphire - it’s gorgeous.

Bengenderson · 20/07/2025 23:28

I'd never hire a lawyer called Poppy or Molly or Milly etc.

Why?

Bengenderson · 20/07/2025 23:24

I really like it, I love all gem/stone names.

Isitreallysohard · 20/07/2025 23:22

Shnuzzbucket · 18/07/2025 10:27

This is how you find out if a name is usable

  1. do you like it - yes, move to 2

  2. does it have a different meaning even though it sounds nice, like Chlamydia - no, move to 3

  3. with your surname is it a stupid one - no, move to 4

  4. what do the initials spell - nothing stupid ? use it

  1. Could this person be taken seriously as a lawyer, Dr etc? Eg I'd never hire a lawyer called Poppy or Molly or Milly etc.
Isitreallysohard · 20/07/2025 23:20

It sounds like a stripper name

ninjahamster · 20/07/2025 23:20

It’s my niece’s middle name. I like it.

PaLilli60 · 20/07/2025 23:17

Sapphire does sound like a stripper name. What about Seraphina? Similar sounds but I think more sophisticated

The car was Zafira.

I know someone why has just called their baby this. Can only think of the car 🙈😂

user2848502016 · 18/07/2025 19:02

Ooh actually I like it! And I usually prefer more classic names.
Could be shortened to Saff/Saffy which is pretty

Emanwenym · 18/07/2025 18:51

The car was Zafira.

I taught a Sapphira once - lovely girl, lovely name. The 'a' makes all the difference.

Isnt that a car?

BarnacleBeasley · 18/07/2025 11:42

I am just thinking of Joanna Lumley with a pudding-bowl haircut and blue eyeshadow. But I also find Saffron a bit embarrassing, as it's Edina's daughter's name in Absolutely Fabulous, and was clearly chosen as a pisstake of a middle-class wannabe hippy name at the time.

applegingermint · 18/07/2025 11:39

I know, strangely, two mid 30s white British women called Sapphire. It’s a pretty name and both ladies have very respectable professional careers. I wouldn’t personally think it’s a stripper name!

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 18/07/2025 11:36

It's a pretty name- if I imagine a black lady named Sapphire I imagine a very beautiful elegant woman, whereas if I imagine a white lady named Sapphire I do think of strippers. I think because for white women it feels like they are less likely to have been given the name genuinely, so it feels like it would be a persona for them. So surprisingly I think my answer would depend on the race of the child being named. When I think of Sapphires I have a connotation of rich dark colour in my head.

caringcarer · 18/07/2025 11:22

A pretty name. If you like it use it.

DameEdnaAverage2 · 18/07/2025 11:22

I recently had a lovely medical consultant called sapphire, so clearly far removed from the stripper connotation.

Sassybooklover · 18/07/2025 11:17

I like the name in principle. However, on a practical level, it does sound like a name someone in the adult entertainment industry would pick. She'd likely be called Saffie, for short, do you like it? Or go for Sapphira instead, it doesn't have the same association. Or even Saffron.

Emanwenym · 18/07/2025 11:14

It's a bit of a name that would stand out or would suit an elegant cat, but if you like it, I can't see a reason not to use it.

Saffiyah is an unrelated name.

Moreteaandchocolate · 18/07/2025 11:11

It’s one of those names that I don’t mind on others but would hate to be called myself. I’d exclusively go by Saffy and avoid mentioning my full name whenever possible!
