How do you like that?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

@Tkoko I think you are really over thinking this.
Can you imagine yourself in a park shouting out "Roman...come on we need to go home now" ?
If yes....call your baby Roman.
You like the name. I assume his Dad does. Easy to spell, Easy to pronounce.
There might be other boys called Roman at school with him or he might be the only one.
It's a perfectly nice normal name.

Which race would it be a slur against?

Romany.
Also Irish Travellers who (apologies if I'm wrong) are different to Romany people.

so roman is a name for uneducated parents? Romeo I totally agree … it was more of a nickname for Roman… but don’t have that feeling about Roman…

It has totally different connotations in the UK to Slavic countries, which is why you don't have the same feeling about it. I guess in Slavic countries it's classic, traditional- something more like Edward is here. Whereas Roman is only very recently popular in the UK.

Names that are very popular very quickly tend to date fast. Not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion, but a safer more conservative option in the UK would be something like Thomas, Henry, Edward, Joseph, James, Oliver and (of course;)) Alexander.

If you love it, great. I'm trying to name a kitten, hence my comment. Not sure if it's a he or a she yet, but I think it's a he.

My little Romeo is turning 1 tomorrow 🥰 love it

Very much Human! I know it's not to everyones taste. Boring if we all had the same taste. Wouldn't change his name for the world 💗

OP ..this thread reads like an A level teachers comments!! You keep asking people to give examples and explain things. It’s just opinions about names..they dont have to show the methodology!

@anotherwordforit , some names say something like 'risk-averse, university-educated parents, probably in a profession like teaching ' or something.
Some names say 'probably teenage parents in a lower income bracket' etc

Like it or not, some people judge.

@ScratCat @Sandmaennchen "chavvy" is a rude slur that's borderline racist.

Which race would it be a slur against?

JellyBeanSpring25 · 04/07/2025 18:54

When are you due @Tkoko? Absolutely sure it’s a boy?

When someone has such a strong opinion on the name it is always interesting to know what is the criteria… I mean if someone understands better what the problems with the name is then he cad definitely suggest a better one… or at least give an example.. I would really appreciate

I’ve already told you why I don’t like those two names. The reasons I gave would not apply to other names. You don’t have to agree with me.

Tkoko · 04/07/2025 18:51

Samiloff · 04/07/2025 18:48

So?
You seem to be annoyed with me for some reason. If you don’t want other people's opinions, don’t ask for them.

No, I am just saying that i would appreciate your opinion on some better names… although i totally understand its very personal

I’m sure you can look up a list of boys' names as easily as I can.

@MadKittenWoman , not in the UK or USA, unless referring to Alfa-Romeo.

Give me please an example of the names that don’t have those connotations and that you find much better?

Neither.

Sorry but imo "Romeo" is awful and either he will be teased his whole life about being a good lover or everyone will think you are copying the Beckhams.

Not keen on Roman either - to me it’s like calling someone "Parisian" or "Londoner" unless you put the emphasis on the second syllable (but lots of people won’t when they see it).

Sorry but you did ask…

Romeo should be pronounced Rom-Eh-o.

But ‘chavvy’ is being used as an insult, to be rude and sneering about the name.

Lots of names can be indicative of socioeconomic background. But why is it ‘bad’ if a name is associated more with working-class people? What’s so terrible or ‘dreadful’ about that?

Is it ‘bad’ or indeed ‘terrible’? Did anyone actually imply that?

And even if others find a name terrible, isn’t that what these threads are for? Giving honest opinions?

Mattia sounds like a girl's name.

It’s an Italian boys’ name. A more masculine-sounding version is Matteo.
