Why do we hate most girl names...

toadandfrog · 03/07/2025 20:05

Dh and I can't agree/find a name we actually love.
These are ones he doesn't hate but has said don't feel like first names, and the ones I don't immediately hate.
And im sure he's only keeping a few for my sake

Elowyn

Mairwen
Odelia
Adoette
Adalia
Alianna
Elliana
Mariela
Alethia
Maeve
Freya / Maea
Medeina
Moryana
Astraea
Arabella
Mariam

We have a Madeleine. I like longer names like this, ones that make you go huh, clearly they own their own ponies and luncheon at the tennis club...
Please help!

You mean like the royal family? The names they use now and historically, Elizabeth, Mary, Alexandra, Charlotte, Anne, Louise, Beatrice, Victoria.

Those are the types of names that truly posh, people use. The poshest family in the country. For example.

You seem to be after Nouveau riche frilly names.
Evangeline
Genevieve
Araminta

If you like Madeleine then I think you need something fairly classic - these are all a bit Disneyprincessa footballers daughter - or trailer park, in reality.

Eg

Genevieve
Verity
Juliet / Julia
Claudia
Imogen
Francesca
Emmeline
Eloise
Helena
Harriet
Serena
Philippa
Adelaide
Rosanna
Cecily / Cecilia
Cassia
Susannah
Saskia

Or if you want a bit more floweryness

Cressida
Fenella
Allegra
Paloma
Octavia
Daphne
Perdita
Seraphina
Tamara
Ianthe
Estella
Georgiana
Clementine
Arabella works here
Alicia (but only produced Ah-liss-ee-ah, if it’s Ah-lee-sha then we’ve left the pony club)

I do like Maryam though, and also Marianne - but they are too similar to Madeleine really

Melsy88 · 04/07/2025 07:56

Astrid?
Emmeline?
Saskia?

ElectricCaterpillar · 04/07/2025 07:34

I have a name that sounds like I owned ponies as a child or my parents were part of the landed gentry. (Neither of which apply) I detest it. Pick something shorter and prettier, take it from one who knows, your daughter will thank you for it. That said Madeleine is nice. Eloise is pretty and sounds similar to names on your list.

UnsocialMedia · 04/07/2025 03:53

A lot of them are quite wafty, OP. They remind of a few women I was at uni with in the early 90s who wore crushed velvet maxi skirts, burned joss sticks and played Kate Bush a lot.

Madeleine is lovely and I really like Elowen from your list, but only spelled like that.

Mairwen - Mare-wun?
Odelia - Delia is nice
Adoette - is it a name?
Adalia - no
Alianna - no
Elliana - no
Mariela - isn't it Mariella?
Alethia - Alicia with a lisp
Maeve - at least it's a name
Freya / Maea - Freya yes, Maea no
Medeina - ???
Moryana - ???
Astraea - ???
Arabella - yes
Mariam - isn't it Maryam?

Most of them are awful.

Davina?!

Davina is actually pretty pony club 🤪

AnneMarieW · 03/07/2025 22:26

Of your list Arabella works well with Madeleine imo - well known, lengthy with nice nickname options but not overused. I’m not sure about most of the others on the list as they are by and large much rarer than Madeleine and many of them will always have to be spelt out (although I do admit a soft spot for Alethia). Or are the opposite and quite trendy/popular like Freya, Maya and Maeve.

Names that fit your style criteria to me (other than Arabella) and work well as Madeleine’s sister would be names like Juliet, Serena, Josephine, Coralie, Verity, Cecilia, Rosalie, Louisa, Felicity, Claudia and Antonia imo.

Moreteaandchocolate · 03/07/2025 22:25

I think Arabella works perfectly for your criteria! Eliana and Freya are nice too.

OP - None of the names on your list sound like upper-class, that i think you are aiming for. The weird spelling specifically makes it sound like made up names, and wannabes…
Don’t do it to your child. She’ll hate having to always be misspelled and needing to correct people.

You have one traditional longish name - there are plenty in the same genre. Just give it a but of time and look at normal names again.

Please feel free to correct any spelling!
Also, I'm not saying they're specifically posh, just not the regular sarah, claire, sophie names and certainly not mckenzie and brooklyn.
I normally research deeper into spellings once a name has been chosen. These are just ones that I've read and don't immediately hate and then dh has gone and taken more off.

Mariam (or Maryam) is beautiful and underused in my opinion. It fits nicely with Madeleine, close but not 'samey'. Freya is also lovely with Madeleine. Have you considered Harriet?

My daughter is called Pippa, we’ve still yet to meet another Pippa. Everyone comments on her name ❤️

bumblebeedum · 03/07/2025 21:04

It’d be Elowen, Elowyn would be the masculine ending in Welsh.
