How does the name Miron/Myron sound?

I came across a Slavic name Miron… which I like for its short form. But I know that it might sound strange for someone not of that origin… is that really so?

@Tkoko I guess you haven't read Myra Breckenridge then? I am not sure I would want to be reminded of that character's exploits every time I called my child!

Or even Milo?

Mirò sounds super cool and European. Tall, dark and handsome in a leather jacket, chain smoking Gauloise and breaking your heart. However, if you’re in an English speaking country, the acute accent will be a pain. It’ll end up as Miro and people will pronounce it incorrectly.

Milo is fine, but currently VERY popular in the U.K. I know four under the age of 5.

Well it’s an existing Slavic name… so if the short for it Mirò, does it sound so awful? Like would Arlo sound soooo much better?

Or even Milo?

Ron is quite a cool name. Didn't do that Ron Bacardi fellow any harm.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 29/06/2025 18:34

Ah, that’s just horrible. Truly awful. Sorry.

Also, where do you live? In an English speaking country, he’d be correcting people’s pronunciation every single day.

@theunbreakablecleopatrajones , Merryn is Cornish, Mirren is Scottish, both male saints, but the names are mainly used for girls.

And if it is Mee-Ron?

Yes, ugly-vintage is exactly the vibe! I think those names are starting to come back round though, I met a baby Bernard recently.

PurpleChrayn · 29/06/2025 18:28

Horrible. A mash-up of Myra and moron - neither particular savoury ideas.

Why does this spring to mind? Smile

I was thinking it sounds like a robot in a sci-fi series.

BurntBroccoli · 29/06/2025 18:18

Sounds like something from the 1930s Flash Gordon.

reallyalurker · 29/06/2025 18:17

In the Anastasia books by Lois Lowry, her father is Myron.

Easipeelerie · 29/06/2025 18:12

It sounds like one of the names youd see on the credits of a black and white American series like The Adams Family e.g. Miron G Hoffenbacker or something.

What about Miron?

Miron is much nicer, but the pronunciation is by no means intuitive.

olympicsrock · 29/06/2025 18:08

Not a nice name I’m afraid .agree ugly vintage vibe.

Tkoko · 29/06/2025 18:05

It's "ugly vintage" like Harold, Horace, Norman, Sheldon, etc. Arthur and Stanley have come back around though, so Myron might be next? It's not for me.

What about Miron?

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 29/06/2025 17:54

I quite like it

Merryn and Mirren seem to be gaining a bit of popularity for girls (Welsh and Scottish origins I think), so it may read as a female name, but it sounds quite unisex, like Rowan

The name Myron makes me think of a middle aged bespectacled Jewish American. It’s a fairly common name amongst Jewish baby boomers, I believe.

My second thought would be Myron Reducto from Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.

I don’t hate it, but it’s kind of ‘ugly cool’. Like Gertrude or something. If I met a kid called Myron, I’d assume he had very trendy parents who lived in Dalston.

And if it is Mee-Ron?

Isn’t the chap in Harlen Coben’s books called Myron?

That's where I've come across it. Was trying to remember. Thank you.

I quite like it, OP.
