My Ideas For Unique Girls' & Boys' Names

BigFatBully · 24/06/2025 13:11

I don't think I've mentioned on Mumsnet yet but I recently found out that I'm pregnant again!!

We are quietly excited and have the 12 week scan tomorrow.

We are wanting to keep the gender as a surprise for when they come along but we've been toying around with some ideas for unique names. We don't want to follow the crowd, we want a unique name that will also be presentable on a CV when they are older.

These are the names we've thought of so far. We wondered what you all think.

Girls:
Matilda
Lynne
June
Estelle
Martine
Louisa
Elaine

Boys:
Jonas
Antonio
Derek
Norman
Lawrence

I quite like Lois but it does make me think of Lois Griffin.

Another name I like is Hilda.

I am currently toying with the idea of Brent for a boys' name.

Thanks all for the replies past, present and future.

Thank you! You say Lois Griffin...I actually quite like Griffin for a boy, lol.

Brent is David Brent though!? How about Fred or Franklin (Frank)? X

Norman is atrocious. Sorry.

These don't scream unique really. Maybe a little old school/traditional but not trendy?

How about things like -

Lois
Lainey
Astrid
Serephine

Matilda is one of the most popular girls names round here! Don’t like Elaine or Lynne. Don’t call a boy Derek or Norman. Please.

greencartbluecart · 28/06/2025 14:55

Unique means no one at all has it

you can’t have unique I think and socially acceptable on a CV easily

perhaps “uncommon” or “slightly unusual “

it would stop me thinking there might be some laughs in the thread ( slinks off guiltily)

piscofrisco · 28/06/2025 14:52

Matilda is pretty common near us. I know 4 all between the ages of 5 and 18.
I love Estelle. And June.
i wouldmy go for Antonio if you aren’t Spanish as it will be endlessly asked. I love Jonas!

I really like the name Matilda but it's very popular at the moment with the self-titled film having a resurgence in popularity recently. But it's a good name in that it can be informally shortened to Tilly to family and close friends but I think formally would look good on a CV or university application for example. We just want to avoid having to always specify "which one" if there are others with that name in class, nursery etc. If that makes sense. 😂

Names don't come into play on a university application !

The op explained early on that by unique she just meant likely to be unique in the kid’s class, so no need for every post to question this 🙄.

I like Jane and Laurence best; Laurie is a lovely nickname. I also like Elaine. You could have Antonius instead of Antonio - it’s ds middle name and he gets lots of comments on how nice it is.

In the same retro vein that you seem to like, how about:

Ernest
Fabian
Edgar
Marjorie
Gayle
Nora

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 28/06/2025 11:51

June is great, but she’d need to be born then
I like Jane too
Estella is lovely - much nicer than Estelle

Matilda and Louisa are too popular to fit your brief, Amanda is nice but Mandy is awful - what about Miranda instead?

Louella rather than Louisa?
Marina or Maria rather than Matilda?

It’s a bit early to revive Lynne on its own, it still carries a downmarket 50s vibe - but maybe something like Rosalyn, Aislinn or Caitlin?

Elaine has the same dated low rent vibe as Lynne, plus there are millions of Eleanors and Ellies about. Martine also sounds tired.

I really like Laurence and Jonas

Antonio is a bit odd if you aren’t Italian - but you went for Anton you should also be able to avoid Tony.

Derek and Norman are terrible. If you want to revive mid century names - John, Robert (Robbie, Bobby), Richard, Michael, Adrian, Adam, Simon, Jonathan, Dominic are all nice. Peter is too, but it does tend to end up Pete.

Unique means one of a kind BTW, so it either means making something up, or at least picking something so obscure no one has been called it in years.

JackieWilsonsaiditstimeforbedlittleone · 26/06/2025 20:55

Are you having a laugh or misunderstanding the meaning of the word unique?

loobyloo1979 · 26/06/2025 20:47

What type of name are you going for? You say unique yet all your names are common just dated. You've imo have chosen quite ugly names. There are millions more 'unique' names out there, that are nicer.

thecomedyofterrors · 26/06/2025 20:43

Be careful of going for ugly names just to be individual. Remember, popular names are often popular for a reason.

there are plenty of lovely, normal names that aren’t in the top 100.

Hazelmaybe · 26/06/2025 20:38

Louisa and Jonas

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/06/2025 11:35

Not Derek or Norman. Poor kid.

BigFatBully · 26/06/2025 11:34

I quite like Carmel too and also Siobhan although we are not of Irish descent.

Think back to 50's 60's & 70's- name that were popular then, not quite made a comeback- and they will likely be the only one in their class/school

Linda/Lynda/Lindy
Jennifer/Jenny
Jane
Sally
Victoria
Amanda
Elizabeth

Timothy
Adrian
Hayden
Mark/Marc/Marcus
Peter

I like Jane. There was a Sally in my class at school in the 2000s. I REALLY like Amanda.

Not keen on Timothy
Peter could be a contender.
I quite like Adrian too.

Mum's got a friend called Janet. I like the simplicity of the name.

.
Girls:
Matilda - nice but common here
Lynne - no
June - Joni instead?
Estelle - love
Martine - no
Louisa - prefer Eloise
Elaine - no

Boys:
Jonas - posh
Antonio - meh
Derek - no
Norman - no!
Lawrence - prefer Leander

TheCountessofLocksley · 25/06/2025 09:35

Oh, this is a disappointment- nothing unique about those names, I was expecting yoonique spellings.

I think Lynne, June, Elaine, Martine, Derek and Norman are incredibly dated and prefer the Laurence spelling, but appreciate it can be spelled either way. Antonio would be unusual if you didn’t have Italian heritage, but do like Anthony.

Martha and Jonas are the stand outs from your list for me, but….whatever you call the baby will be their name and will suit them. So go for what you like.

naomicrobiome · 25/06/2025 09:20

Girls:
Matilda - rather popular, too fanciful for my taste
Lynne - going against the grain here, but I quite like it
June - ditto Lynne
Estelle - not keen, can't shake the image of a pensioner
Martine - I would fully expect her dad/granddad to be Martin
Louisa - gorgeous, enough said!
Elaine - despite knowing a young teen named this, it sounds old and unattractive to my ear
Boys:
Jonas - I think it's lovely and a bit different without being try-hard
Antonio - would find a bit odd if not Spanish or Italian. Anthony?
Derek - with kindness, NO
Norman - ditto Derek
Lawrence - fabulous, though spelled Laurence if a given name

DeSoleil · 25/06/2025 07:55

Unique means one of a kind and none of those names are unique

Out of all of them I like Louise and Lawrence.

loobyloo1979 · 25/06/2025 06:25

Matilda- lovely
lynne- no
june- no
Estelle- no
martine- no
Louisa- no
Elaine- no

Jonas- no
Antonio- no
Derek- no
Norman- no
Lawrence- no

you don't have a great list op sorry.

edited to add- these are not unique names!

Paaseitjes · 25/06/2025 05:55

I like them all, but they're all popular names, just not for the current generation of babies. A lot of them are my mum's friends. Derek was my grandad, and I work with lots of younger Diederik/Dirk/Derik/Dereks so I like it. I live in the Netherlands, so about half of them are my mid-30s peers' names because fashionable English names because fashionable overseas when the English babies grow up (and vice versa). I'd add Neville, Maurice and Carine to your list as having similar vibes.
