Thoughts on the name Taya for a girl?

Middle name would be Louise

@JillyGiraffe , that'd my objection to names like Mia, Fiadh, Maya. Depending on the accent, they can sound like mere, fear and mire.

KakulasSister · 16/06/2025 23:39

Awful. It's just a word.

Sure all names are just words.

Unless you mean that you haven’t heard of it before and think it’s not a name which is just a lack of knowledge on your own part really.

user1492757084 · 18/06/2025 07:27

I prefer Tia.
I also like
Tess Louise and Tess Louisa

JillyGiraffe · 18/06/2025 06:42

I wouldn’t know if it’s Tay-a or Tyre! Maya has the ‘I’ sound. I wouldn’t want my child to be called Tyre…

repeatingabaselessclaim · 17/06/2025 20:14

I've always liked the name Taya.
I've known two people by the name, one was a woman and the other was a little girl in DD's class, both were of Serbian heritage and they spelled the name Taja, pronounced Taya.
Taya Louise sounds nice together.

FlourishNotPerish · 17/06/2025 19:26

Not keen. I don’t really like Tea either. Thea is better & I know a Theo(dora). I prefer Tamara, Talitha and Tallulah.

@AnneMarieW , Taya, Tia, Thea, Théa, Téa,
Maya, Maia ...
Kaia, Kaya ...

Agreed @DuchessOfNarcissex But that’s partly why if it’s @rubyywoo ‘s favourite, I don’t think there’s any reason not to use it - as a Taya is unlikely to have any issues with her name, even though the individual numbers for it aren’t huge (and despite it not being a classic/traditional name that’s usually my personal taste, I still find it pretty).

Because a good percentage of Taya’s peer group will have these similar style names, so she’ll fit right in. And despite their popularity on Mumsnet and seemingly in the charts, I’ve actually found it’s names like Elizabeth, Charlotte etc that stand out more in nursery now in my experience - even Olivia and Amelia stand out when nearly all the other girls have a 2 syllable name ending in “ah” or “ee”.

@AnneMarieW , Taya, Tia, Thea, Théa, Téa,
Maya, Maia ...
Kaia, Kaya ...

Lovely,

Remember MN cannot compute another that is not a dreary ‘classic’

While I’m a usually a fan of more classic names myself, I don’t think Taya is popular/well known enough to have any downmarket or other problematic connotations personally- she’ll likely be the only one most people ever meet unless it suddenly takes off.

And all the Maya’s out there seem to survive the “May-ah” or “My-ah” confusion we have here in the UK. I can’t see the name causing her any real problems - in fact the only annoyance might be if there’s also a Thea in her class (but that’s the risk with all these quite similar 2 syllable “ee” or “ah” ending names that are popular/trendy at the moment eg. Mia/Mila/Maya, Lila/Lyra/Layla, Ava/Ada/Ayla etc).

DuchessOfNarcissex · 17/06/2025 09:47

disregard 'head'

DuchessOfNarcissex · 17/06/2025 09:42

@AllProperTeaIsTheft , but if the accent is missing it will be 'thee-a'.

Taeya is worse. Is the ae like in head, Rae, or Caesar?

IstanbulBaby · 17/06/2025 09:35

I know a Taeya (same pronunciation as you)
I think it's lovely

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/06/2025 09:33

Oh but I suppose it would then cause new confusion with the 'th'!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/06/2025 09:32

It's ok. I've met one (bonkers girl!). It hadn't really occurred to me that it could be an English rendering of European pronunciations of Thea / Théa but that makes sense. I think I'd prefer it spelled Théa tbh - it would also avoid the 'tie-a' confusion.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 17/06/2025 09:28

Taya - Behind the Name says it as TAH-yah.

MirandaBlu · 17/06/2025 08:57

There are likely multiple origins and etymologies for this name, but Taya as a "modern Hebrew" name is the transliteration of the Hebrew תאיה, which in turn is an acronym for תוצרת ארץ ישראל היפה (Made in the Beautiful Land of Israel). It's one of the "modern Hebrew" names created in the wake of Israeli statehood in 1948 and would generally be considered old fashioned in Israel now, but has been used more recently by (mostly US, I think) fundamentalist Christians - probably referring to a metaphorical rather than a geographical Israel in that case.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 17/06/2025 08:05

@DeSoleil ,but accents get omitted, and Tea doesn't work.

Torkieshorkie · 17/06/2025 07:41

Lovely,

DiscoBob · 17/06/2025 00:32

I don't know how it's pronounced and never heard it before. It sounds a bit down-market tbh.
Tia, Tara, Tana, Tamsin, Taylor, Tansy, Tessa for example I prefer.
It's certainly unique I guess.

DeSoleil · 17/06/2025 00:28

In the film Sleuth, Téa is the mistress of Andrew (Laurence Olivier) who is spoken about but never seen! She is the owner of a Finnish Sauna!

Wonderful film if you get a chance to see it.

Norastroud · 16/06/2025 23:51

I think it’s a pretty name and know of a Teya, pronounced Tay-a

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 16/06/2025 23:41

It’s quite weird

I’d go with Tay (the Scottish river) or Tara (the Irish hill)

KakulasSister · 16/06/2025 23:39

Awful. It's just a word.

SallySummerPop · 16/06/2025 23:37

I like it. I would say it is pronounced tay-ah like the lady from MAFS who spells it with the y.

rubyywoo · 16/06/2025 23:34

it would be pronounced as Tay-a

I like it as it’s not overly common but not too wacky either. My other favourite names are all super popular (Sophia, Olivia, Lily etc).
