Hate DD’s planned baby name. Is it ever ok to say that?

I expect the answer is to keep quiet but I fear by future grandchild will be teased mercilessly.

No, I wouldn’t want to be called after someone who was raped in mythology. There’s enough violence in the world against women and what happens when the child looks up the meaning of her name?
if it’s the eye-oh sound, then Iona. Can be shortened to Io but she is not lumbered with it.

Cattenberg · 11/06/2025 22:07

I actually considered it as middle name for DD, until I read about the rape in the story.

Also, she could have got very self-conscious whenever her nursery group sang Old Macdonald had a Farm.

Zippidydoodah · 11/06/2025 22:07

Iona might be a nice suggestion 🤷🏻‍♀️

Moveoverdarlin · 11/06/2025 22:06

Massively depends on your relationship. I genuinely would need my Mum on board with any baby name I chose. I value her opinion and think she has good taste, so I value her input. If it’s something you genuinely think they would get teased over then I would mention it. My parents would. It’s how you say it is important. You could say ‘I do like Jester, I’m just worried everyone would think court jester’. Or you broach it by saying ‘What is the thinking behind Badger then?’

My MIL said ‘poor child’ when I said what we intended to call my child. I hated her for it.

Some people genuinely don’t know the connotations of some names. There was a poster on here only today from a woman wanting to call her child Ludo. Everyone said ‘you know it’s a board game right?’ You know there was a weird character in Labyrinth called Ludo? She didn’t know, and said she’d been massively put off.

Koazy · 11/06/2025 22:06

Say nothing. Poor kid

Mandarinaduck · 11/06/2025 22:06

Io is a lovely name and I don't think it's that weird or offbeat. I knew a lovely Iona who went by Io (and I know that Io is a name in its own right).

I don't think people will get the name wrong. They only have to hear it once.

Definitely don't say anything.

crumblingschools · 11/06/2025 22:05

For those who like it, would you like to be called it?

Yes. Apart from the I and L confusion.

Zippidydoodah · 11/06/2025 22:06

E-I-e-I-o is what I think of.

i really don’t think you can or should say anything, though. It’s her baby.

crumblingschools · 11/06/2025 22:05

saraclara · 11/06/2025 22:05

I like it too, and I'm not one for going off piste with names. I don't think anyone will make fun of it at all.

The only problem I can see is the capital I bring read as an l. Just as there's no difference between them in what I just typed!

User415373 · 11/06/2025 22:05

It's very in keeping with the current trend of girls names formed staring and ending in vowel sounds (Ava, Orla, Isla, Ada, Ibhi, Ida etc). I think it has a lovely sound but it only being 2 letters puts me off a bit!
The capital I will cause problems as people will assume it's an L as it's next to a vowel.
Don't say anything!

Gosh. That’s a tough one.

it is a difficult name to give a child.

what sort of family are they - does it suit them? Is the name significant to them?

They are both teachers and currently live abroad teaching at an international school so I suppose they are hearing lots of unusual names.

You could use a grandma only nickname.
As someone upthread said it's one of Jupiter's moons.
Maybe call her Moonpie 🙂

Honon · 11/06/2025 22:05

I actually know a little Io! I see why it wouldn't be to everyone's taste but it's really not that bad op.

ARichtGoodDram · 11/06/2025 22:04

I doubt your DD would listen, and it would damage your relationship.
My Nana managed, thankfully, to edge my parents toward a sensible middle name and I promptly switched to that at 14 unofficially and 16 officially by deed poll.

I did used to wish my Nana had said more when I was younger, but I realise now why she didn't.

ZiggyZowie · 11/06/2025 22:04

My mother in law said " she'll not thank you for that ". when we told her name of my daughter.
The name ? Chloe which was no 1 for ages in polls. She kept calling her Cleo,I think on purpose trying to wind me up.

Mother In laws name ? Wilhelmina Davina

Say no more..

MermaidMummy06 · 11/06/2025 22:04

It's odd, but not offensive. She'll be constantly correcting people, but, then again, we all have normal names and everyone gets them wrong anyway.....

Like one of Jupiter’s moons? I actually love it.

helloquitty · 11/06/2025 21:59

Gosh. Maybe drop into conversation/suggest Lola and they can shorten it to Lo?

But it’s Io, as in eye-oh, not Lo

You can't say anything. You could try to pick your moment, but it'll not go well.

My GM was unpleasant because my DS's 'normal' name has apparently religious origins she was opposed to. I never even knew that was an issue with her!! It hurt a great deal, and sadly now she's passed it does taint my otherwise lovely memory of our relationship (along with the stirrer cousin who blabbed it to me).

Besides, can it be that bad? As my DC have grown I've heard some absolute clangers - especially at the school gate!

Needmorelego · 11/06/2025 22:00

Hate is a strong word.
Do you really hate it or just dislike it.
If you have a genuine reason for hating it (name of a school bully, horrible boss etc) then be honest and explain why you don't want a grandchild with that name.
There's loads of names I dislike - but I don't think I actually hate any of them. They just aren't to my taste.
Edit: just seen your follow up post.
I think you might just have to grin and bare it I'm afraid.

hereismydog · 11/06/2025 21:58

Depends on the name! If it’s truly awful/might get the child teased, I would say something.

However, if it’s just not to your taste then I wouldn’t. I liked Astrid for a girl but my Mum made no secret of how much she disliked the name. I ended up with a boy whose name she loves Grin
