I expect the answer is to keep quiet but I fear by future grandchild will be teased mercilessly.

This must be a wind-up 😂

No, she was from a Korean family

HideousKinky · 12/06/2025 07:26

How about suggesting Ione which is also from Greek myths (it means sea nymph I think) and they could say Io in the family for short.

Or Iona (the Scottish version)

CinnamonJellyBeans · 12/06/2025 07:26

It's a nice name. Initially, people will call her Lo, but this will only be in intitutional settings and only once each time. So maybe not the most convenient name, but not bad enough for you to veto it.

IsitaHatOrACat · 12/06/2025 07:26

I work with someone called this but spelt Ayo. Never been a problem. I O could pose pronunciation problems

TomatoTrousers · 12/06/2025 07:17

Don’t know if anyone said but it means “I” as in first person pronoun in Italian and would be pronounced “eee-oh”

I think with European languages attacking vowels in many different ways they’ll hear quite a few versions on how to pronounce Io.

NetZeroZealot · 12/06/2025 07:16

I think it’s a nice name. But you could suggest Iona and abbreviate it?

Enko · 12/06/2025 07:15

YYYDlilah · 11/06/2025 23:38

Brilliant. I'll call my DC Crapper because surnames as first names are trendy..

You do as you please. My birth name is a English euphemism for a penis people got over it and just learned to deal with it and that was 30 years ago. Im sure they can cope w Crapper now.

Io to me is beautiful

Einszwei · 12/06/2025 07:13

The Greek spelling might get a lot of confusion, but the name itself I think is really pretty. In Nigeria the name Ayo means Joy.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 12/06/2025 07:13

I think it’s a lovely name and yes I’m aware of the myth

and tbh even some pretty straight forward names still seem to be a struggle for some people so I wouldn’t worry.

and no don’t tell her

MsMcGonagall · 12/06/2025 07:11

I like it. So don't say anything!

Doncarlos · 12/06/2025 07:11

On the one hand I want to say kids don’t get picked on for unusual names these days.

But the I immediately started singing old McDonald had a farm. Ee i ee io

Superhansrantowindsor · 12/06/2025 07:02

Say something. She doesn’t have to agree with you. My mum told me she didn’t like the name we picked. I just ignored her. Friend told her dd she didn’t like grandsons name. It was changed ( had a meaning the mum wasn’t aware of) no big deal or drama.

Mumofsoontobe3 · 12/06/2025 06:57

I had some rather head turning names on my list prior to ever having children. All girls names.
I'm pregnant with my 3rd boy. I now realise how ridiculous these names I had were. I wouldn't say anything, she has plenty time to change her mind if she isn't pregnant yet (ps all my kids have pretty normal, common names apart from DC3 who's is slightly different but not unheard of)

thepariscrimefiles · 12/06/2025 06:57

It sounds a bit like 'Eeyore', the donkey from Winnie the Poo.

I still wouldn't say anything to your daughter about not liking the name. She probably won't change her mind and she will just be upset.

Lulu1919 · 12/06/2025 06:52

Never heard that name...
Old Mac Donald's farm came to my ...
But as a grandma myself....don't say anything !!!

BarBellBarbie · 12/06/2025 06:51

It's terrible but say nothing. At the end of the day it's just a name, you'll get used to it.

MummaMummaMumma · 12/06/2025 06:49

You can, and should, explain your worries.
You should not say how much you hate it.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/06/2025 06:46

BreatheAndFocus · 12/06/2025 06:35

No, they won’t because this letter is a capital I not an L:

Precisely.

I think it's fine @Giggsie. It has a fresh elegance. There are far far worse mentioned on here and one is trending at present.

flufffyyydog · 12/06/2025 06:43

You can’t say anything, no.

It’s different now, children don’t get teased for their names like being unusual they did when I was growing up - not in London, where I live anyway. And I work with children and I hear a lot of very quirky names, and nobody says anything.

If you say something, your daughter will resent you.

Anyway, someone else probably will.

But actually, I like it!

BreatheAndFocus · 12/06/2025 06:35

ChocolateGanache · 12/06/2025 04:50

Op it’s really not that bad. In fact it’s cute. Most people wouldn’t know the greek mythology.
They will think it’s short for something like Lois or Lola.

No, they won’t because this letter is a capital I not an L:

Hate DD’s planned baby name. Is it ever ok to say that?
Saturdaybloodycleaner · 12/06/2025 06:26

I know an Io and she’s a gorgeous person and I’ve always loved her name. I think you’ll end up loving it too once you meet her (the baby, rather than my friends daughter). It’s never been thought of as outlandish or even slightly out there. Just a pretty and unique name (in a good way).

a bit outing here, but my name is Karen, named after Karen Carpenter but I’m going to stick my neck out and say that’s a much more difficult name to live with these days 😉

Ancasta · 12/06/2025 06:23

I think it’s a lovely name!

BreatheAndFocus · 12/06/2025 06:21

I think it’s lovely. I’ve only known one person called Ɪo and nobody called her 10 or lo because they’d either seen her name written down with a proper capital i with serifs like this: Ɪ ,or they’d been introduced and heard her name. The emphasis is on the first letter - EYE-oh - so nothing like Old Macdonald 🙄

OP, there were lots of rapes mentioned in mythology. People still use the names of those women, eg Cassandra, Demeter, Persephone, to name a few. I wouldn’t let that aspect worry me.

Don’t say anything to your DD.

hajbajkajlad · 12/06/2025 06:18

Being called Ian, Andy and Gary would be embarrassing now, but those were very popular names at the time.
Nobody mixed up Ian up there with Lan, so don't worry. Trends change and you're a whole generation older than your daughter: you would be embarrassed but her generation thinks it's cute!

hajbajkajlad · 12/06/2025 06:16

Giggsie · 11/06/2025 21:57

It’s hugely distinctive and identifying so I have name changed and will ask for this thread to be deleted.

its Io.

its from Greek mythology, a women who was raped by Zeus.

the child will spend her life being called “Lo” or “10” due to how it’s written.

I like it.
I also like isis which we obviously can't use anymore. Shame.
She won't be the only one with a Greek name. Greek and Disney names are on the up at the moment, little Io will be one of many.
