Sounds too posh?

We're having a little boy and have narrowed it down to

Gabriel
Dante
Morgan
Reuben

We like unusual names rather than traditional names. The problem is that we already have a double-barrelled surname. Do you think our poor baby is going to sound too posh?

I don't think any of those names are posh. By posh do you mean upper class or poncey? They'e neither anyway.

Ellbell · 22/05/2008 19:21

Of course, if you are a pre-Raphaelite fan you could go the whole hog and use Dante Gabriel Double-Barrel.

expatinscotland · 22/05/2008 19:15

I like Gabriel. In Spanish or French. In English, no.

CrushWithEyeliner · 22/05/2008 19:13

Can you be sure your Dante will be dark, brooding poetic and are either you or DH you of Mediterrainian heritage? Then don't use Dante.

noddyholder · 22/05/2008 17:54

Like dante but the others are in abundance here but it is brigthon home of the silly name

CantSleepWontSleep · 22/05/2008 17:41

Fan of Gabriel and Reuben here. Not too posh by my standards, but then half my potentials list has been named on the recent posh names threads, so what do I know?!

vicsta · 22/05/2008 17:39

Gabriel LOVELY, sadly vetoed by DP.
Dante, hmmm maybe a bit posh-ish.
Reuben, I like it but becoming popular.
Morgan Very Very popular here in Wales so wouldn't use it.

EllenJane · 22/05/2008 17:38

Gabriel is nice, esp. the nickname Gabe - lovely! Morgan is so not posh and Dante I don't know much about as i've never met one. Reuben I can't warm to.

SNoraWotzThat · 22/05/2008 17:19

I know girls called dante and morgan

don'tachknow tis lasses names too

Joash · 22/05/2008 17:14

No posh names on here. Although I do like Dante (would that be after THE Dante?)

rolledhedgehog · 22/05/2008 17:09

I have a Gabriel. I am very not posh!

Dante

Morgan

Reuben

jk1 · 22/05/2008 16:08

I would avoid Morgan and Reuben as could sound like 3 surnames.

Gabriel my fave.

branflake81 · 22/05/2008 15:14

I don't like any of them. Sorry. But then I like traditional names.

pinkorblue · 22/05/2008 15:05

Gabriel

myredcardigan · 22/05/2008 14:44

Gabriel is lovely!
Definitely go with Morgan or Dante though if you do not want people to think you're posh!

DforDiva · 22/05/2008 14:05

i always liked reuben, but dh not

pagwatch · 22/05/2008 14:03

nothing wrong with choosing to be D-B - it just isn't posh. And you didn't want posh so that is good, isn't it ? .

in my youth i remeber telling a woman at my office that i would not be adding Dh ( to be's) name to mine as it was so pretentious and wanky and it was becoming really common. So had the double whammy of being psuudo snobby and really cheap all at the same time.
You can guess where i am going with this story can't you ...
" oh I see" said Nancy xxx-xxx

Didn't get much of a pay rise that ywear which taught me not to be gobby, judgemental and forgetful all in one go.
She was a really classy woman too so I could not have been more inappropriate if i had tried.
I put it down to my extreme youth at the time.

edam · 22/05/2008 13:55

I think Reuben's best, Gabriel's fine, Morgan's mostly used for girls these days but if you can cope, why not? Dante sounds very chavvy, sorry.

minniedot · 22/05/2008 13:53

Well being extremely posh myself (wink) I have a Gabriel, it's a lovely name imo.

Divejaney · 22/05/2008 13:53

I have to admit - the double barrelled surname is self-inflicted as I didn't want to lose my surname when I got married because I like it to much and DH liked the idea of making a new name together.

gglimpopo - have you called your son Rover? (sorry)

I like Gabriel and Reuben best of that list. I nearly called mine Gabriel but didn't in the end because it's hard to say with my surname. I don't think double-barrelled names sound that posh any more because so many people combine their names when they marry now.

ggglimpopo · 22/05/2008 13:37

I really wanted a Reuben, but I kept having daughters. I then got a black labrador and called him Reuben instead.

I then had a son
