Sounds too posh?

We're having a little boy and have narrowed it down to

Gabriel
Dante
Morgan
Reuben

We like unusual names rather than traditional names. The problem is that we already have a double-barrelled surname. Do you think our poor baby is going to sound too posh?

OH AND daNTE IS VERY NICE, but i think it would be sadly seen as chav tastic. Morgan is ok.

pagwatch · 23/05/2008 12:20

but I think Morgan with a welsh accent is lovely. It is Morgan with any other accent is

carmenelectra · 23/05/2008 12:18

Absolutely love Reuben and Gabriel, especially Gabriel.

Really wanted that name but no way would dp agree. He said it would be shortened to Gay, whereas i thought it would be Gabe! I would talk him round if i had another boy!

i have said before though, and i still think this, that although Reuben is gorgeous, i do think it sounds like a dogs name

Divejaney · 23/05/2008 12:17

Thank you all.
It's amazing that some names totally divide people into what's posh and what's chav.
We live in Spain and were trying to choose names that could be pronounced in both countries - plus I have some Welsh connections, hence Morgan.
I've always tended towards Gabriel as my fave and now have a little more ammunition with the DH as that seems to come out top on balance!

Love Gabriel - it was on our list but didn't make the cut probably because it is a little bit posh for us.

Dante is nice but a bit poncey

Morgan is a bit common rather than posh and is just as likely to be a girl's name as a boys (presume the spelling can be different?)

Reuben don't like it at all. Don't think it is posh though.

Bucharest · 23/05/2008 12:07

Gabriel is a tough one in England, if that's where you are...it's still too girly sounding....
Dante is chav-tastic. Totally. Of course it isn't meant to be, but it is.
Morgan- surname now used as unisex first name. Definitely not posh.
Reuben- middle of the road. Getting popular though. Maybe the new Theo (also definitely not posh)

Clary · 23/05/2008 00:43

I like Gabriel of yr choices (DH vetoed it and actually it's not great with our surname).

Morgan is one of those surname as first names that has become unisex which is a bit tricky IMO (like Taylor and Jordan). Don't want to be a boy with a girl's name.

Reuben I would not choose myself. I lnow one or two. None of these names soud especially posh to me.

jessikart · 23/05/2008 00:31

I think Gabriel & Reuben are gorgeous names! Lovely feel to them and they're unusual enough to stand out, without being so different that they're going to spend their life spelling them out for other people.

As for double barrelled surnames, DS isn't double barrelled, but he does have two surnames in the Spanish style - one Scottish surname that no one spells correctly, and another surname that's Latvian so most people give up before they even start trying to write it! Our reasoning was that if we didn't double barrel he could always drop one name to make life easier I've had a few people get a bit personal with me about why I'd 'inflict' two surnames on him rather than 'just let him have his dad's name', but never the accusation of being posh or pretentious - in fact I think it's almost the reverse these days!

jasper · 22/05/2008 23:24

But heck, what do I know? I wanted to call my son Jasper.

I am effectively named on mumsnet after the son I never had

jasper · 22/05/2008 23:19

but that's just it nappyaddict, they are either poncy or chavvy!

I meant the idea of calling your child Dante just defies belief so I assumed the op had to be joking.

Crikey, it was not a serious suggestion was it ?

Pen74 · 22/05/2008 23:17

I know of a Gabriel and Bailey sibset and a Gabriel and Benedict sibset. I think it's pretty classless.

Dante has chavvy connotations, although I think it's ok-ish to use. Morgan is a no-no after Bianca's return. Reuben is ok.

nappyaddict · 22/05/2008 23:11

except dante? i would say dante is definitely up their with the chavvy names. but then again i wouldn't say gabriel was chavvy at all. tbh call him what you like. it's all down to personal opinion isn't it. one person's poncey name is another person's common chavvy name.

jasper · 22/05/2008 23:06

you are havin a laugh asking if they are posh???

and totally having a laugh with Dante?

and a bit of a snigger with morgan, surely?

All a bit Chavvy except Dante which I am sure is just your little joke

nappyaddict · 22/05/2008 23:05

Gabriel sounds posh but the other 3 don't imo. Don't like dante though.

carrieon · 22/05/2008 22:49

I tried to get dh to agree to Reuben as a sneaky way of getting the name Ben, which I love and he vetoed! I know an adult Reuben who gets called Reubs, and both he and the name are lovely!
I have a male cousin called Morgan and he doesn't come across as posh.
I think only a child of a certain character can pull of being a Gabriel, but if they can pull it off then its v.cool.
I'm afraid Dante has very chavvy connotations round here...sorry.

Ellbell · 22/05/2008 22:27

Aaargh! No, ElizabethBeresford... not with an accent... Never with an accent! Nooooooooooo!

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 22/05/2008 21:23

Gabriel gets my vote. Agree that d-b surnames are mostly not posh (unless they denote the joining through marriage of two ancient branches of the aristocracy and possibly not even then...)

ElizabethBeresford · 22/05/2008 21:19

Is it just me or is it funny to see Reuben and Gabriel on the same list?!

I'd definitely go with the old testament and pick Reuben I love that one. I had Reuben on the list for my dd(pre 20wk scan).

Morgan is ok, kind of jaunty or androgenous or American or sur namey. I'd say it's neither posh nor the opposite.

Danté on the other hand is a little self-consciously different for my taste.

FifWoo · 22/05/2008 21:09

Gabriel is lovely and surely would always be guaranteed a good part in nativity play No no to Morgan plus it's the name of a shop!

lljkk · 22/05/2008 20:03

Dante sounds pretentious (for white people like me) or African to me (neither would be 'posh').
I know 1 girl and 2 boy Morgans (it's a Welsh boys name, isn't it?).

None of them would make my personal faves list, tbh.

myredcardigan · 22/05/2008 19:29

Expat, both the Gabriels I have known were Irish and unrelated.

muppetgirl · 22/05/2008 19:24

...his nickname is 'Henny roo' and I love it!

Vivace · 22/05/2008 19:24

None of them are posh. I don't mean they aren't nice (though I think of Morgan as a US female soap star). Hugo and Miles are posh.

MuffinMclay · 22/05/2008 19:23

Don't mind Reuben.
Don't like Morgan or Gabriel
Really don't like Dante.

IMO, Reuben and Gabriel are pretentious rather than posh, and Morgan and Dante are a bit common (ones I've met are anyway).

But what I think doesn't matter a jot.

muppetgirl · 22/05/2008 19:23

My ds 2 is
